Police probing death of Troy man discovered in Skowhegan

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Police investigators were sharing few details Friday about what they were calling the “suspicious death” of a Troy man.

The body of Richard Howe, 63, of Troy, was found Thursday afternoon in an apartment at 36 High St. in Skowhegan.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday that “every indication” is that Howe died Thursday in the apartment, which is rented by a female acquaintance. The woman, who lives in the apartment alone, has been questioned by police, according to a press release, though McCausland would not say whether investigators believed she was involved in Howe’s death.

McCausland said Howe knew the woman but wouldn’t describe their relationship. “That’s one of the things we’re trying to firm up,” he said.

Police were called to the apartment at about 2 p.m. Thursday, and a team of 10 state police detectives and officers from the Skowhegan Police Department spent Thursday night and early Friday morning at the scene, said McCausland.

An autopsy of the man’s body at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta was scheduled for Saturday. McCausland said detectives were awaiting the results of the autopsy and consulting with the Maine Attorney General’s Office about their next move.

“There’s just not a lot of information available until the medical examiner gives us something conclusive,” said McCausland

The apartment building has several units and is located near the Somerset County Courthouse in downtown Skowhegan.

BDN- Did you erase my comment because I was right?????

that was my dad he was a great man worked hard all his life and I would love to know what happend what was the coment that got erased

Im in indiana

xbhowex- Very sorry to hear about your Dad, I would hate to have this happen and be so far away, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers! I will not repeat the comment though as BDN deletes anything they do not like, but I will tell you the comment was more about the lady than your Dad, something just sounded a bit strange about her not giving much info on how they knew each other, I do not know either of them I was just speculating on what may have happened! Again very sorry to hear about your Dad and I hope you can get the answers you deserve during this tough time! This is a tough time to have something like this happen, just remember that your Dad is now your Angel and will be looking out for you, and is in a much better place as hard as it is for us to accept!

thanks I will find out

XBHOWEX, if you aren't pulling our legs, than I am sincerely sorry for your loss.......................As far as the woman, we don't know yet for a fact - if it was bad enough, the woman would of been arrested. Not saying she had nothing to do with it. But realistically, they don't know what happened and there could of been more people in her apartment when he died. JUST SAYING :)

Cocoanut- WHY would xbhowex lie about this being his Dad, he said he lives in Indiana, he probably just wants answers! Also as far as the woman, no they would not necessarily have already arrested her, they could be waiting for her to slip up and make a conflicting statements, and may not have enough to arrest her on yet, it sounds to fishy for her NOT to be involved in some way??? Maybe other people were there maybe not, seems strange that they waited til 2pm to call police?? It reminds me of a case that happened in Bangor back in 1999 where they waited to call the police until they "cleaned up" the house. I'm just saying it sounds a bit fishy!!!!

so sorry to hear about your dad, i hope you get your answers very soon, this has been happening way to often lately in our little state, very concerning.

You know me moving out of maine and seeing the things in the city took me off guard but you get used to things but up here its so differnt thanks for all your kind words

i simply said that, because you never know who someone really is online and i still said my condolences. police found the body at 2pm, it doesn't state in the article how long his body was there. but i agree, something isn't right.

PS You others need to show a bit more sympathy....family members are searching for reasons, answers, anything we

WABI website said the autopsy was done and the results are suspicious, that is about all it said as they are still investigating and will not release anymore info, but they did say they are still questioning the woman!

Brandon and Courtney...sorry this happened to your dad he was a good man!!! It should not have happened!! Mom and dad met this woman wednesday night and mom knew there was something wrong with her!! My mom invited your dad to there christmas eve get together and to dinner on christmas day, mom thought it odd he did not come to either because he said he was going to be there! We found out shortly before dinner friday why he did not come. :-( I hope all involved get the full punishment they deserve. Richard was a very caring and well liked person and this should not have happend to him!!

This is a terribly sad story, but the very last place on earth I would "look for (meaningful) answers" is the comments (meaning "gossip, innuendo and reckless speculation") section of a local newspaper's website. Our condolences to Mr. Howe's loved ones.

Updated story posted: Homicide by stabbing. An arrest warrant has been obtained for the woman, Karen McCaul of Skowhegan.
