Palmyra woman grateful to be alive after crash

PALMYRA, Maine — The last thing Tabitha Morrill remembers about the morning of Dec. 12 is looking out her passenger window and seeing a telephone pole coming at her.

“I remember thinking, ‘Oh crap,’” she said during a recent interview. “I don’t remember much else.”

A LifeFlight helicopter rushed the 22-year-old to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Doctors told her she was lucky to be alive, but her injuries are serious: broken and fractured vertebrae in her neck, a fractured skull and severe facial injuries, a terribly damaged right ear. She faces months and months of healing.

“[Doctors] haven’t said, but I’m assuming and hoping that she’ll make a full recovery after everything is healed,” said Barbara Gould, of Hartland, Tabitha Morrill’s mother. Morrill, a member of the Nokomis Regional High School Class of 2005, is staying with her parents while she heals.

The accident on Route 152 in Palmyra knocked out power to at least four towns and closed the road for most of the day. Rescuers said ice and drifting snow caused the crash.

Facing several months in a neck brace and numerous follow-up visits to doctors, Morrill has her sights set on the day she can resume her normal life, though the challenges ahead are considerable.

Morrill, who has no health insurance, worries about her medical bills and is hoping to keep a home she rents with a roommate in Palmyra. A family member has distributed collection cans at local stores, and family and friends are doing what they can.

“She still has to pay rent for her place if she wants to keep it,” said Gould. “Plus she has the medical expenses. We’re just grateful she’s still here.”

As difficult as the pain is — Tabitha said she “never sleeps” because of it — fighting boredom is almost as hard. She yearns for visits from friends and family to break up long days with little or nothing to do except sit and heal.

“That makes her even more depressed,” said Gould.

Having recently received her license as a certified residential medication aide, Tabitha looks forward to returning to her job as a caretaker for two women with developmental disabilities at a firm called SKILLS Inc.

“I love everything about it,” said Tabitha of her job. “It’s just the thought of helping people, I guess.”

Tabitha said she’s grateful to the rescuers who pulled her from her car and the doctors and nurses who cared for her at the hospital.

“That means a lot to me,” she said, adding a piece of advice for others: “Drive slow.”

Well-wishers may contact Tabitha Morrill by calling 938-3872 or by mail to P.O. Box 22, Hartland 04943.

I am glad this young lady is ok what a horrible crash!! But 1 question... it is the law in Maine to carry Car Insurance... why wouldn't it cover hospital bills?

Hope this answers your question Tikitorch

"Maine law requires every vehicle owner or operator to carry liability insurance, uninsured motorists, and medical payments coverage."

"Medical payments coverage pays for the medical and funeral expenses incurred by you or others hurt or killed in an accident while riding in or driving your car. Claims against this coverage include all reasonable hospital, surgical, chiropractor, X-ray, dental, professional nursing, prosthetic, and funeral expenses. It will also cover you and family members of your household for injuries resulting from another vehicle while walking or biking, or while riding in another car. This coverage will pay for your medical and funeral expenses even if you cause the accident. Usually, only expenses incurred within a specified period of time after the accident are included. Medical payments coverage is also required by Maine law. As of January 2008, you must have at least $2,000 in medical payments coverage on your policy."

Many people only carry the minimum coverage required by law and in this case, it will not go very far.

Poor girl, apply for free or reduced care, she has no means of income while she recovers and obviously she will be disabled for quite some time. Probably would meet the requirements for Maine Care. This is one case where the benefits are definitely needed so she can get the care she needs without a lifetime of medical debt.

Many wishes for a speedy recovery! God Bless!

getting help from this state can be hard(maine care) they give it to people who don't really need it / abuse the system and the people like this poor girl has to fight to get it(who really needs it) i carry full coverage on my car cause you'll never know when u need that extra coverage.i hope this young girl has a speedy recovery and as pain free as possible.

I hope you have a speedy recovery but give up the rent you can always find another appartment to rent put your money towards your hospital bills.

Two thousand in minimum medical coverage will just about cover the cost of the helicopter. The remainder of the bill will be paid by the taxpayer. Perhaps this is one reason the health care that Snow and Collins are so against is so important to maintaining the hospitals. They cannot keep passing along medical bills to the rest of the patients. Oh I forgot... the health insurance industry and Big Pharma need more money.

so glad this young lady is alive to tell the tale, i,m sure the hospital has told her about the funds they have available for helping with the bills, all there is to do is mend and get better soon!!

I'm glad she will recover.

However, seems alot of you need to get over the "the hospital will pay for it if she can't" way of thinking. "I'm sure the hospital has told her about the funds they have available" one reader writes. There are no funds. This hospital "absorbs" tens of millions in free care every year. But, this actually just costs those of us that can pay more for the services we get and adds to the millions in MaineCare debt the state owes hospitals.

Sounds like this poor little girl is a hard worker who had a bad accident! That can happen to any of us! At least she is in the working system and paying for all the low lifes like the rest of have to, so we all should be thankful for that and be happy to help her out for the time she will be laid up when she gets back on her feet she will be doing her share to pay once again for the jerks that don't work but get everything free. Good luck to you dear and a speedy recovery.

What? Not one commenter has written in yet to tell us how this tragedy can be laid at the feet of Obama! Come on, folks, I'm certain there's someone out there who can break away from Radio VOMIT for just one darn minute to explain to us how Bush and Co. would have figured out a better way.

Please define okay!!!! She will be bed riden for months and may never have a full recovery. Please think about your family and how an accident like this could effect everyone involved. My FLUFFY, as we call her, has always been active and helpful to all those around her. Tabitha would be the first in line to help anyone who needs it. I could never begin to tell you how her love for children has helped many young mothers get by when they couldnt take anymore. Tabitha would step in and babysit, buy diapers or what ever the child needed. This terrible accident has made it impossible to care for herself, let alone the people she always goes out of her way to help. This has been life altering for our whole family. My sister, Barbara Gould, has been up with more trips to the ER. Fluffy is there right now and we all wait on needles and pins to see her Funny Face again. So please dont assume that she will be okay at some point. Think about you loved ones and please pray!!!

she is a very lucky person to be alive...tabbie is a great person with a heart of gold..she would do anything for anyone...she is also a very hard worker..that is where she was coming from was workin the over night shift..SHE WAS NOT ON A CELL PHONE....there was a patch of ice on the corner when she came around it...it took her off the road...she was not speeding and had a seat buckle on also....but what is sad is the first fire fighters on the scene was her family...her father, brother and cousin....to go be called out to an accident and discover its your own family is very scary...the family has been though alot the past few years and i hope things change for them...but thats what keeps them together....thats what family stands for...tabbie and her family is loved by alot of people....they all are great people...i love you tabbie and hope you get back on your feet soon...but until then get lots of rest....thats what is goin to help......love marcia, lee and family

PeterTaber find another story that is more relevant for your post....Pleas!!

Hello, to answer alot of questions for you CONCERNED readers..... MY daughter was on her way home from working another shift because someone else called in again. She does have AUTO insurance but it only covers $5000. in medical payments, which will not even cover the lifeflight bill. She is a very hard worker who will pick up any shifts @ work that they ask her to. And yes health insurance is offered once a year at her job, but lets face it when you work for $8.75 an hour it makes it hard to afford health insurance. She has a broken neck that the doctors tell us is normally fatal, a basel fractured skull, fractured sinus cavity and had 80% of her right ear ripped off in this accident. She was wearing her seatbelt, which broke during the accident, throwing her into the windshield before the airbags deployed. She sat in her car yelling out the phone numbers of her family members to the people at the scene as she waited for the help to arrive. She saw the firefighters arriving on scene to help her, and then starting yelling "Dad get me out of here." Put yourself in his shoes......he & our youngest son(also a fireman) left our home to go to a motor vehicle accident to get there and have your daughter, sister or any family member be the one you have to rescue!! When you arrive to help and hear someone holler to you to help them because they see you before you know it's them makes you feel like your legs are rubber and you cant get to them fast enough. You dont think of your own safety as the power lines are down all around the car, all you think is I need to get her out asap. I hope that you never have to experience what we have gone through and if you do god bless & may all the readers think before they judge your family. She is a very lucky girl and we are all very thankful she is alive, she has a long road ahead of her and we will be there to help her in anyway we can.

my two cents you don't know the area! There is NO cell reception in that area at that time! The tower didn't go up until the following week. This family has been through losing their home not once but twice since I have known them....yet they have continued on and in fact go out of their way to help others. I have known Tabbie since she was in high school and she is a kind and generous spirited girl. This is not the place to gripe and put your biases. If you don't want to help than go gripe to someone else!

WOW I can not imagine going to an accident and seeing my daughter in the car like that. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. As for you MYTWO....sounds like you are a very negative and uncompassionate person. Sometimes might be better to keep your twocents to yourself.

two cents you are a judgemental fool!!! Not all teenager have a phone to their ear at all times, crawl back under your rock and leave my family alone. Tabitha is one of the most responsible people I know!!

Did you find out if it was my2cents?????????

Cell Phone related that is....:)

My2cents has no clue on reality, no idea what the area is, find a story you might have some knowledge and leave her alone.

you know what ass$hole (mytwocents) I WAS NOT ON MY CELL PHONE!!!! I was on my way home from work and the roads were not the best and i just happened to get the ice so you can go to hell and go fuk urself i am sick of you saying the same thing over and over again on my story so get a clue and stop commenting on my story it is botheering my friends and family as if they dont have enough to worry about they have to worry about some careless retard talking s*it about something they clearly have no clue about!! so get a life and get off of my story!!

Get well Tabbie. You may have a long road ahead to get you body back in working order, but many are pulling for you and do not automatically think the worst. Thank you for the difficult work you do. I worked in that field myself for many years and know that all will be anxious to have you back.

Please do not feel you need to justify yourself to anyone who posts negative things about your accident. Just keep all your energy positive and focus on healing. Those of you that cannot find comforting words for this young lady just keep it to yourselves. You really come across to most of us reading the comments as classless and base. Get well Tabitha, it is going to be a long road but based on your post your a fighter and will not give up. That is so important with a long recovery process.
