Shrimp parts a problem for Portland Water District

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — All of that shrimp caught off the Maine coast this winter is causing concern for operators of the Portland Water District.

Spokeswoman Michelle Clements said the district hopes to avoid a repeat of last year, when shrimp parts from processing plants clogged a downtown sewer pump station.

This month, workers already have removed shrimp shells, heads and antennas from screens that block trash and non-sewage waste from flowing into the city’s water treatment plant.

Inspectors are working to ensure that processors don’t send shrimp parts down the drain. The problem isn’t acute at the moment because harsh weather has limited the amount of fishing. But the catch is expected to pick up next month.

Hmm, sounds fishy...

Sounds like maybe some sort of garbage disposal grinder would help the problem? Just an idea.

Love those native shrimp!! WOO HOO I eat 'em shell and all with the wiggle still in 'em. Nothing like a little crunch to go along.

Okay....I have a solution. The shells are HIGHLY nutritious....to plants that is. Grind 'em up for fertilizer/compost!! Sheesh....I can't believe some enterprising Mainer hasn't thought of that yet!!
