Clinton woman dies after 2-car crash in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Maine — A Clinton woman was killed and three others were hospitalized Monday after a two-car collision that police blame on treacherous road conditions.

Jamie Lounsbury, 24, of Clinton, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at Maine General Medical Center’s Thayer Campus in Waterville, according to Fairfield Deputy Chief of Police Steven Trahan.

Lounsbury was the passenger in a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Robert Burrell, 27, of Newburyport, Mass. Lounsbury and Burrell were traveling north on Norridgewock Road at about 8:44 p.m. when Burrell apparently lost control of the vehicle and skidded into oncoming traffic, said Trahan.

The Explorer was struck broadside by a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup driven by Darren Ridley, 33, of Farmington. Ridley’s wife, Tanya Ridley, 32, was in the passenger seat, and their 10-year-old daughter was in back.

Tanya Ridley was taken to Maine General Medical Center in Waterville with rib injuries, and the daughter suffered minor facial injuries, said Trahan. Tanya Ridley was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Burrell first was taken to the Waterville hospital before being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland with a back injury. Burrell was in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Trahan said he believed everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt.

“It appears that Mr. Burrell was traveling too fast for the road conditions,” said Trahan, who said he did not expect any charges to stem from the accident. A crash reconstructionist arrived at the scene, but was unable to determine exactly what happened because of fast-accumulating snow, Trahan said. Both vehicles were demolished.

The road was closed during the investigation and cleanup, with the last officers clearing the scene at about 11:50 p.m.

I was on Maine's highways the last two days and Maines DOT needs a " touch or two" in the upper levels as they were beyond treacherous!!!! There wasn't even a lane nor a sign of an exit ramp on I95 most times Monday night, a complete disaster. Time to retire those 6 figure salary heads and put some real people in there who care about things above Augusta!!! Anyone who was on the roads needs to callMDOT and state the facts, not complain, state the facts.... There was no need for such states of condition..... this is unacceptable.

i agree, wheres the salt the sand the plow trucks? this year mdot is slacking, how many more people at risk for accidents because they cant takecare of the roads. sorry to the family of the woman who passed away. somehow just doesnt seem fair.

I was traveling North on I95 Monday evening and the roads were treacherous. There were only a couple of sections that had a couple of trucks out sanding/salting. As far as flashing the 45 MPH signs, that happened on the last lag of my trip, where the roads weren't bad at all. Those signs should have been flashing much sooner in the lower half of the state!

We are cutting back, but those in charge at MDOT need to keep in mind... SAFETY first!!

My sympathies to the family of Ms. Lounsbury. May God Bless you all during this very difficult time.

So according to the previous postings it seems people require a SIGN to TELL them to SLOW DOWN when driving in treacherous conditions??!! They

apparently can't figure that out for themselves. I do not understand why Mr. Burrell wasn't TICKETED for "Driving to endanger". "It appears that

Mr. Burrell was traveling too fast for the road conditions". Since someone lost their life due to his wreckless driving is that not considered

"Involuntary manslaughter" ? This is the second accident in two days where a driver was traveling too fast for the conditions and yet neither was

ticketed. What's happening here?

I myself was not directly commenting on the case of Mr. Burrell. I was stating a fcat that there was zero speed on I95 monday night in most all sections as there was no I95 just 6 inches or better of snow, white out conditions and no sign of anyone plowing for HOURS. There was people stranded in parking lots of the exits they finally found, in the dark as power was out also. Cars were off the road and if an ambulance had been needed , heaven help them to get there and back to the hospital. I suggest people start carrying a camera and take a few canted shots to put in the paper from now on as MDOT may be cutting back by putting many lives at risk.

My condolences to the family of Jaimie Lounsbury. The best tribute to her life we can all do is make sure the " trecherous road conditions" are taken care of so that that danger does not represent itself. Anyone driving to fast Monday night needs more then a ticket , they need a psyc exam. The road conditions were unacceptable.

MDOT trucks are being given to large a distance per truck to cover adaquately according to someMDOT drivers I have spoken with, so lets stretch the budget, stretch the coverage and give the higher ups more perks ????? Commissioner Cole needs to get some telephone calls from each individual out that night. Call for Jaimie as her life may have been spared if the driver , who was going to fast for the road conditions, had been driving on safe roads to begin with. Again, I am not defending, Mr. Burrell I am asking that Maine people do not accept this low quality of winter road coverage from MDOT.

Yes, the flashing 45 MPH signs can and do, help to alert drivers, of the road conditions that exist. It isn't always evident that there is black ice on the roadway. It may appear to be raining, when actually, it could be lightly sleeting or cold enough to slick up the road, and be a hazard to anyone driving... even if you are going "seemingly" slow enough.

I'm assuming that the reason Mr. Burrell didn't get a ticket, was because the reconstruction team wasn't able to determine exactly what happened due to the fast-accumulating snow.

This is a true tragedy. A young woman loses her life, and for what reason? Cutbacks at the DOT? Probably has something to do with it. Going too fast for the road conditions? Probably the biggest reason right there! Not to pile on here, but have you ever seen a Mass driver slow down for anything? Me neither... I was in Bangor yesterday and on the return trip I could not believe the amount of ice on I95 from Bangor to Augusta! Several cars and trucks in the woods and/or off the road in general. I could not believe that nobody was killed! The road conditionions sucked yet people were flying along like they were on bare roads regardless of the numerous vehicles they passed in the ditch. Slow down people, and in reference to the DOT some better follow up is NECESSARY not arbitrary! My condolences to the family of Ms. Loundsbury and a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

Also Gods Speed To Ms Loundsbury and All Others Involved.

I am from Maine with a Ton of Bad Weather Experiences

And For those That Say Mass Drivers~~You are Full of It~~It is Just A Lot of Drivers That Are Crazy.

And the Biggest One of All~~Have you Ever Wondered Why A Maine State Trooper~~Can Pass You in The Worst Conditions~~It IS Called Training and Learning how to Drive In the Snow. It is Called Practice Some in An Empty Parking Lot when Its Slippery. Learn what Your Vehicle can and Not Do.

Be Responsible to LEARN that YOU are Driving A DEADLY Machine. Get A Vehicle Ya Know Like All Wheel Drive~~And Learn how to Drive IT~~Ask Questions about different Conditions~~Learn Learn Learn What You Are Doing.

There IS Nothing More Dangerous That a Timid Driver~~Going 10 miles an hour~~When Conditions are alright for much Faster. Pull Over When You Got a bunch of Vehicles behind YOU

Sorry For The Vent~~But Timid Inexperienced Drivers Cause Accidents To.

No Way Am I Making Excuses for This Accident

Tragic accident for the families.

It is a reminder to all of us to slow down....even those that think they are experienced and can drive in the snow. I am a slow cautious driver in the snow and will gladly pull over to allow you to pass at the first opportunity. Please don't tailgate and get your shorts in a ruffle before I get the chance to do that.

I am Jamie MacArthur Lunsburry's Grandmother Jamie left behind 3 little girls. I donot believe that Robbie was going to fast. The streets in town were

very very bad. The country roads and 95 had to be worst. These people are were responsible persons. Jamie was within a mile of her home.

Her little ones waiting for her at their grandparents. She had worked that day. picked up a few groceries on the way home.

She was a person who worked two jobs to support her girls. She loved her family and friends. She was loved by everyone that knew her. If you

walked in with no shirt on, you would walk out with hers or another. As for Robbie, he was here for Christmas. He was a nice guy and No one knows

if anyone was going fast. I saw what the truck did to the explorer. It hit Jamie and it hit hard. Think of how these men feel. The State and Towns

need to do better jobs. When you write a stupid comment. Think about the families. and who you will hurt before you write. Robbie is in the Portland

hospital in pretty bad shape. Both drivers will never get over this, nor will my family. Three little girls ages 4-5-8 have no mom. No mom to go to work,

their school plays, She won't be there for their proms, weddings or anything else.. There is a trust fund being set up for the girls. Anyone who wants

to can contact Lawry Bros. Funeral Home 107 Main St Fairfield, Me 04937 Telephone 453-6049.

greatgrammy Thank you for your post. All excuses from everyone put aside Maine roads were deemed treacherous by the police at the scene. The state can cut back on a lot of nonsense but winter road care should not be one of them and is is suffering according to the very workers themselves not to mention all our personal experiences on these roads this past week. Look out for this weekend as if you must travel it is almost guarenteed to be beyond treacherous!
