Woman, 19, fights off man in carjacking

ELLSWORTH, Maine — A young woman from Portland fought off a carjacker who had just escaped from a courtroom Wednesday afternoon and forced him to abandon his attempt to steal the car, police said. The man was captured a short time later.

Hannah Leeman, 19, was seated in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked on Main Street when Thomas Sawyer, 42, of Brooklin, hopped into the driver’s seat and threatened to kill her if she didn’t get out, according to Deputy Jeff McFarland of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Leeman did not get out, but stayed in the vehicle and battled Sawyer as he drove off.

“He told her to get out of the car or he would kill her,” McFarland said. “She didn’t get out. She fought him off. She was punching him and kicking him. She beat him all the way up Bridge Hill.”

Sawyer has had a string of encounters with law enforcement, according to Lt. Patrick Kane of the sheriff’s department, and had been arrested Dec. 27 on charges of violation of probation and violation of a protective order. He had been brought to the Hancock County Court House from the county jail Wednesday afternoon.

Officers were just beginning their investigation late Wednesday afternoon and details of the escape were not available.

Sawyer bolted from the courtroom and headed toward Main Street, where he found the vehicle with the keys and Leeman in it, according to Kane. Leeman had been visiting the area and was waiting for a friend to come out of a store.

Sawyer jumped into the driver’s side of the car, started the car and, when Leeman refused to get out, drove off, heading up Bridge Hill toward Surry.

Faced with the onslaught from Leeman, Sawyer stopped the vehicle near the Black House on Route 172 and again ordered the young woman out of the car, McFarland said. With the vehicle stopped, however, Leeman turned off the engine and pulled the keys from the ignition. Still being pummeled by Leeman, Sawyer got out of the car and started walking toward Surry. Leeman called the police.

Kane, McFarland and Ellsworth police Officer Chris Smith were at the sheriff’s office when Sawyer’s escape from the courthouse was first reported at about 2:15 p.m. They began the search for Sawyer and were joined by several other Ellsworth officers.

McFarland said he was at the intersection of Main and State streets when Leeman’s call came in, “so I headed out there. Chris [Smith] was right behind me. I caught up with Sawyer near Ben’s Store. When I pulled up, he took off running. Chris and I tackled him in the ditch.”

Leeman was not injured during the incident.

Sawyer, whose freedom lasted for all of 10 minutes, will face charges of escape and robbery in connection with the theft of the vehicle, police said.

A perfect reason to carry a hand-gun. A perfect example of real threats in this world.

You go girl!

Ah the price of freedom. 10 minutes of getting your butt kicked by your "helpless victim", a cold walk uphill and getting tackled into a snowbank for probably 10 years or more in the clink. Sweet trade you got there. Don't try this at home kids.

She's lucky he didn't pull a knive out & slit her throat. That wouldn't have made for a Happy New Year for her.

Ok, she opened a can of whoop butt on him. Is that better BDN?

Still amusing to read.

Perfect reason to NEVER leave your kids alone in a car even for a minute to run in a store!!! This 19 year old girl is lucky.

Thomas Sawyer from Brooklin? Do you mean Tim Sawyer? I am glad the girl was able to fend him off and get help. He seserves everything bad that comes his way. Noone should do that and that poor girl was visiting and this is what happens to her. Throw him in jail and lose the key

A bit of fear, a bit of spunk, and a decision to fight back equals one tough young lady! So thankful this guy got out and ran instead of punching back. So many what ifs but split decisions are made during fight or flight and she triumphed over the bad guy!!!

Can't you show the picture of the girl we should fear? Maybe Ellsworth could make her Chief of Police for the day and clean up the place.

JeffDubay~~ No need to fear her but you damn well better RESPECT her! Good girl! I love hearing stories of women who don't just lay down and whimperlike a helpless victim. She gave him what apparently he SHOULD have had more of when he was little......maybe he wouldn't have been running from COURT as an adult. He'll not only have to nurse his wounds, but also take a lot of grief now that he's back behind bars. It'll be tough having to explain to the rest of the guys how a GIRL kicked your butt!

nothing worst than a tee'd off woman. great job. a gun isn't always the solution.

good job Hannah....you should have killed him or atleast smacked him in the balls to render this piece of crap out for the count...jump in my car and try this, you would be going out in a body bag to Jordan Fernald for services....GREAT JOB HANNAH..AND HIS NEW CHARGE SHOULD BE CARJACKING, NOT THEFT OF A MOTOR VEHICLE, AND ATTEMPTED MURDER....

No attempted kidnapping charge for this loser? I have a suspicion he will be kept under closer scrutiny after proving himself a "flight risk".

Instead of doing five days he'll get four years. Maybe he'll learn something then.

He kidnapped her too, so add those charges, and he threatened to kill her. You go girl!!!

You can't fix stupid.

stupid is,what stupid does.

This dude picked the wrong car to steal.

Yikes!! Good job kid, crazy but good!!!

Nice job Hannah!! Spell your name backwards and you still kick ass!

But let's see outdoorman... if she had a handgun it could have been taken from her in the close confines of the car and used to shoot police officers. I think this outcome was better.

Its not kidnapping if he told her to get out and she decided not to. Myabe Tom Sawyer should have jumped on a raft andf headed down the river.

I see more of this across nation every day. People are sick and tired of being a victim. The more these idiots see that the public will not be a doormat the better off we will become. Nothing like a good beat down (by a woman no less) to put this special needs person in his place. I'm tired of hearing authorities telling us not to resist or fight back. People are smart enough to know when to stand up for themselves.

From the lowly police to the courts to the judges, we have lost confidence. The police are hamstrung by stupid laws. The courts and the prosecutors are inept. The judges are being to lenient on these fools. It is no wonder that we the law abiding public will fight back. He got just a dose of well deserved street justice. It could have been worse for him and he better learn from it or he will be, forever, handicapped by his own stupidity.

What kind of car was worth this?

Ok, not to lawyer this up but.................subject's actions and statements would result in most people to believe death was about to occur, so instantly incapacitating this guy with as many rounds as you want would have been justified, and ironically she would have later been found innocent by a jury of us, in the very building he ran away from. What needs to happen in Maine is a few of these a holes need to jump in the judges cars like this, then they would receive the kind of prison time they should have been getting in the first place.

What is it they say in the civilized world?...................bust a cap in his ass??

Kudos to the courtroom security as well. Nice job by you bozos.

I would bet that if she did have a gun and pointed it in this losers face...there would be less to write about because even an idiot like him would be smart enough to realize he made a mistake. Good for her. Throw the loser away for years.

This is why we always keep our car doors locked.

Hmmmmm...A concealed Weapon sounds pretty good right about now doesnt it?

I am so glad that Hannah was not hurt. I think she took a huge chance and risked her life. I would have gladly given him the car. I am no whimp but I wouldn't have taken that chance. I am glad things turned out the way they did. Yes , people are fed up with all this type of thing. We have to find other ways to fight back. Never put your life at risk for some fool. I would love to hear what the guys in jail have to say to this idiot!

Don't they usually put out a reward for an escapee? Just give it to this young lady.

outdoorman - Kill 'em all, right?

First, cudos to Hannah for her bravery and general kicking of the criminal butt. But if she were my child, sister, friend, etc., I would tell her that no car is worth the price this could have cost her. Just like employers tell their employees, if someone comes in to take the money, let him have it. No money is worth your life.

Not a real smart 19 year old. Apparently he's not violent because he probably could've knocked her out with one punch then threw her out of the vehicle. As far as saying a girl kicked your butt? Sounds more like he wasn't the type to hit a female. For the sake of families if someone says get out or I'll kill you, give the idiot the car, then call and have it remotely disabled, unless you have a gun, then tell the mutha get out or you'll kill him.

How about adding kidnapping to his charges.

Way to go Maine girl....glad your safe. You did take a risk and not something I would reccomend to anyone fighting off an attacker.

Good Job Hannah!!! My question is how many CO's were with the inmates at the arraingment?

Obviously brought to court without shackles on his legs. This is the judges rulling. Something about accused not being made to look guilty in the eyes of a jury. Don't blame the CO's for the Courts stupidity.

She's lucky, he could have killed her if he wanted to.....

Good for her!! but I think the charges should be stiffer then escape and robbery??

I think more like GTA Grand Theft Auto maybe? and attempted murder and kidnapping of a person??

And as well as the escape charges..I don't get Maine.

I wonder where this girl lives?? Where she was just visiting.. must be a tough neighborhood! Good for her though! She stood her ground and put him to the ground!

Terrible reason to have a hand gun..He could have used it to shoot her...Among the charges also should be attempted kidnapping..

In case you haven't heard, he was found dead in his jail cell yesterday am, the article is in today's BDN:

"Ellsworth jail inmate found dead

Brooklin man had tried to steal getaway car after fleeing courtroom"

Congrats to this young girl for fighting him off! things could've been alot worse. Glad she's ok!

Things only would have been a lot worse if he was a violent person, which he was not. He was desperate and panicked. None of you know how you will react if everything you lived and worked for was taken away in one year.

good for you hannah!!! my kind of girl right there!!

TIGGRSMOM would you get over yourself. You may think Tim wasn't a violent man but he said violent stuff. He threaten to kill a poor girl. Who was just waiting for her friend. Then take off with her in the car. Helloo did you forget to read that part. Stop trying to defend Tim it won't work. Keep wasting your time. What about the hundreds of phone calls he left on his wifes phone which caused all this to happen. Did you forget about that. You never even visited Tim in jail. Why is that???????? Hannah this is your article you go girl. Im very sad this stuff had to happen to you. You should of beat the crap out of him. Tiggrsmom stop being selfish and grow the heck up. You will never get anyone to believe that Tim wasn't violent maybe not phyical but gosh darn mentally. What is his excuse years before this.? Since you have so many excuses for him.

meant to put he is mentally and verbally violent. Lets not forget about his alchol and drug addictions.

tiggrsmom.... he did not lose everything in just a year. and how do you know he was not a violent person? were you married and living with him? I think what he did he did because he wanted attention and wanted pity from everyone. I am glad the girl is okay. I just want everyone to get along whether or not you liked Tim or not. there are innocent kids involved and people need to grow up!!

eaterofketchup... you are so right. i commend you with everything you said

Eaterofketchup----I don't need to get over myself. This isn't about me, it's about people who have nothing better to do than to run someone down when they are no longer here to defend themselves. How would you know I didn't visit him at jail? Do you know all there is to know in this world? You certainly seem to think you do.

I'm sure NONE of you are such saints as you seem to think you are. You live in an area that is just like Harper Valley. You ALL have skeletons in your closets and have no right to judge him.

Downeastblondie----About the only thing you said that has any merit is that there are kids involved. Have some respect for them at least.

Just so you know Tiggrsmom I was friends with Tim and i haven't lived in Brooklin that long. I have no skeletons in my closet thank you. How i know you didn't visit him in jail because Tim himself told me you didn't he told me noone visited him. So thats how i know. I WAS FRIENDS WITH TIM UNTIL HE STRATED PULLING HIS CRAP WITH ME. STEALING MONEY FROM ME AND ALWAYS WANTED ME TO BAIL HIM OUT BUT YOU BAILED HIM OUT HOW STUPID ARE YOU. I dont think i know everything but i do know what he has told me. Oh and by the way good job for thinking about his kids considering you try to blame his oldest child in your other little notes you have written. I saw you at the funeral hahahahahahhaha. You didn't see me and im glad you didnt because i couldnt beleive you showed up. The nerve you have. Hey downeastblondie nice comments tiggrsmom had to say about us the joke is on her. Have a good life and i hope you feel guilty for the crap you had pulled.
