Rally urges end to Gaza blockade

WATERVILLE, Maine — One year ago, as the world celebrated the end of 2008, tensions between Israel and Gaza erupted in an invasion by the Israeli army called “Operation Cast Lead.”

The 1,400 Palestinian civilians who died were the latest victims in decades of bloodshed between Arabs and Jews in the region. Gaza has been held under a military blockade ever since.

According to some of the speakers during a 90-minute rally Thursday in downtown Waterville’s Castonguay Square, the blockade amounts to a “slow starvation” of a million Palestinians. Worse, they said, most of the weapons used by the Israelis are of American origin. Now many Gazans struggle to obtain the most basic necessities, such as food, water and medicine.

“The American taxpayer has paid for those tanks. You’ve paid for those guns. You’ve paid for those F-15 [fighter jets],” said Peter Sirois, of Madison, one of several speakers who addressed a total of about 25 people. “They’re slowly starving these people to death. This is a holocaust.”

Several of the speakers didn’t appear to take sides in the conflict, but objected to the siege as a human rights issue, and no one voiced pro-Israel views. Israel has defended the action in news reports and on Web sites by citing the firing of hundreds of rockets by Hamas, a militant Islamic political organization, from Gaza into towns in Israel.

Desiree Dow, of Southwest Harbor, read a letter written for the event by her partner, Tom Jackson, who is in Gaza and Israel shooting a documentary film for the American Friends Service Committee.

Jackson’s letter described a dire situation in Gaza, including a 40 percent unemployment rate, a shortage of water and food and frequent deadly clashes between Israelis and Palestinians. Many homes and public infrastructure lay in ruins from bombings.

Lisa Savage, of Solon, a local coordinator for a group called CODEPINK, urged the group to stay educated about Gaza and to share that education with as many people as possible. She also suggested putting pressure on Congress to end American military support for Israel.

Seven participants read a short play called “Seven Jewish Children” by British author Caryl Churchill, a Palestinian supporter. The story, told in the form of statements to a child that begin “Tell her ...” or “Don’t tell her ...,” traces the history of the Jewish people from the Holocaust to their migration to Palestine and through many of the major events in the region since then, including last year’s Israeli invasion.

“Tell her we’re fighters/Tell her we’ve got new land/Don’t tell her about the bulldozers/Tell her it’s a building site,” read the actors. “Don’t tell her what she doesn’t ask/Tell her we’re making new towns in the desert.”

Several members of the audience had tears in their eyes toward the end of the performance.

“Tell her we kill more of them,” read an actor, who was then cut off by “Don’t tell her that!” from another.

A pause, then: “Tell her that.”

"Seven Jewish Children" is a racist play, racist about Jews. Shame on those who put this racist play on in Waterville.

Israel is defending itself. Palestine does not want to peacefully co-exist with Israel....Palestine wants Israel....War is hell, but you are pointing the finger of blame in the wrong direction.....

.

You Moonbats have a lot of nerve calling the situation in Gaza a "holocaust"....when you completely overlook and ignore the "holocaust"in your own country ...that of the unborn.....Hypocrites .....

What Do You Expect Israel To Do

When Every Nation Around You

Says We Want To Make You Disappear

And You Want America To Support That Thought Process

Didn`t You Learn Anything From WW2

Palestine Stop YOUR BS and Things Will Change

Ya Know Like Maybe NOT Launching Rockets For at Least Six Months.

Ladyslipper~~Abortion Is Legal~~Take Your Battle to the Supreme Court

And Leave Law Abiding Citizens Alone.

Wouldn't CODEPINK arouse more public sympathy if they protested their Messiah's war in Afghanistan?

Useful idiots

What a bunch of fools. The Palestinians are a thoroughly corrupt breed - can't ever be trusted to do what they pledge. How can you negotiate with such pathological liars?

Israel has the right to protect itself. I think they show too much tolerance towards these "poor oppressed" terrorists.

Thank God for our freedom of speech - how else could we so easily identify the fools who live among us?

Thanks to the Bangor Daily News for covering this event, which brought together concerned citizens in support of ending the siege of Gaza.

I would like to correct the misstatement that no one expressed support for Israel. In fact, poet Lee Sharkey spoke about the origins of the group Women in Black among Israeli women seeking an end to the cycle of violence we find in many spots around the world. Her statement that she vigils with Women in Black weekly for years drew applause, and her sharing of the group's call for an arms embargo on both sides -- Palestinian and Israeli -- drew the loudest cheers of the day from the crowd assembled. Also, the courage and leadership of young Israelis who call themselves Shministim and are jailed for refusing military service on the basis of conscientious objection was noted as well.

The US citizens who participated in this event focused their criticism on their own government for continuing to fan the flames of violence in the region for corporate profit and strategic control of key energy resources in the Middle East.

Finally, the short play "Seven Jewish Children: A Play for Gaza" by Caryl Churchill displays a range of attitudes as expressed by fictitious voices wondering what to tell a female child about the violence and how to keep herself safe. One of its themes is the nature of truth, which is meaningless without context. Performance of the play is free on condition that a collection be taken up to benefit the organization Medical Aid for Palestinians, based in London. Readers may want to examine this play for themselves and decide whether it is racist, as alleged by commenter JonathanUK above. It can be downloaded here: www.royalcourttheatre.com/files/.../SevenJewishChildren.pdf.

Code Pink is a radical organization. Anyone associating with these nuts should be ignored.

Its a fact that Israel is the only side that wants true peace here. whenever peace is achieved, gaza terrorists begin to launch rockets into civilian areas of Israel to purposefully kill innocent children, women, and families. But these people choose to believe otherwise. there is a difference between bloodthirsty terrorists and peole who are simply trying to protect themselves.

It is amazing that the arab world, UN, and others continue to put pressure on this tiny country of israel to give away even more of its land to palestinians. a people who have squandered millions of dollars of aid and used it to buy rockets. if the surrounding arab countries were so concerned about these people they would give some land to them. some of the millions of acres of land that surrounds this area. Israel is here to stay folks. God ordained it, and that settles it. Watch and see what happens when someone attacks Israel.

this land was given to the israelites long before the arabs were there. its all in the bible. and archeology is slowly proving it without a doubt. thats why the jordanians are not allowing digs to occur around the temple mount, they are finding too much evidence proving the land was all jewish. its common knowledge with most historians that Rome destroyed the Jewish temple in 70 AD. "jewish temple"..... this is long before these people showed up.

Gotta Wonder What College This Thought Process Came From

Sooner or Later~~All Will Know Why Are In The Mid East

"A co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink, which has made a name for itself by interrupting hearings on Capitol Hill, is a fundraising bundler for Barack Obama.

Jodie Evans has pledged to raise at least $50,000 for Obama, according the Democrat's campaign site."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0608/Code_Pink_cofounder_is_Obama_bundler.html

Bet 99% of the moonbats who belong to CODEPINK have Obama stickers on their Volvos...

Every invader always says that God gave them the right to take some other people's land. King James of England; you know, the guy who ordered the Bible's revision; said, Thank God Almighty for binging this pestilence upon these savages." King James was referring, of course, to the small pox the white men brought to the Indians and decimated their tribes. Without the generosity of the indigenous people of what we now call North America and the pestilence brought by the filthy white race, our "God-fearing" ancestors would never have survived to become the most war-mongering race the world has ever known. Don't get me wrong, there have certianly been other inhumane and mis-led people in history: Genhis Khan and the Mongols, Alexander and the Macedonians, Hitler and the Nazis; to name a few. It's just that we have become such a sanctimonious horn-blowing hypocrites who have engaged in constant war since founded as a nation. As always, out wars are to preserve "freedom". Freedom of what? Freedom of the wealthy to exploit the poor and woking poor? Even today, we spend billions for 'security' against percieved terrorists who manage only to kill an average of 3 or 4 hundred American citizens a year while 10,000. Yes 10,000 Americans die every year for lack of adequate health coverage. Are we ruled by a class of sub-humans who do not even understand the priciple of 'risk vs. benefit'?

I do understand why their are so mant misconceptions about what is happening in Palestine. You have been led down the path of self-riteousness by the American corporate-controlled media. They won't tell you the truth. Not only because you can't handle the truth, but you would probably have a hard time understanding the truth.

And Beelzebubba; as for Code Pink protesting the occupation of Afghanistan. Where di d you find that rock you've been hiding under?

This military blockade you speak of is what keeps the radical terrorists in the Gaza strip busy searching for food and other necessities that will help sustain they're own survival and that hasn't left enough time to lob rocket after rocket into and onto the Israeli state and it's citizen's.

Hummm, I believe the Israeli's are onto something here...... As for America turning their backs on Israel, in my opinion that would be THE biggest blunder to come out of Washington to date, religiously speaking, no where in the bible is America mentioned, standing up for Israel could be the only thing holding this country as we know it together now, it certainly isn't the grace we are extending our creator, that couldn't be farther from the truth... again, just my opinion.

It's all the Romans' fault.

Thanks for this protest...the people of Gaza must be freed from this blockade of terror....sadly the US supports and funds Israeli violations of international law concerning the Palestinian people. I must take issue with previous comments that claim that peace activists all support Obama. I don't and am protesting against his war in Afghanistan as vigorously as I protested against Bush's war. American endless wars are contributing significantly to our own economic collapse.

Bring our war $$ home and use them for education, health care, roads, bridges, public transit and more. These wars are not about going after terrorism, pure and simple they are attempts by the US corporate oligarchy to control declining supplies of oil and natural gas. And the US taxpayers are paying for it and our troops and dying for their profits.

"War is simply Darwinism in its purest form."

A quote from my Dad (R.I.P.), Randy Butthead

Does Anyone remember The Nam Protest that escalated into the Shooting of Students

Do You remember the talk of the Subversives That Worked the Students in a Frenzy.

Now who would the Subversives BE Now<

SnarkyButthead, tell Beavis Tele said hi....

Stop the black market Israeli trade in Palestinian organs.

Snarky's now working on his 2nd bloody, Tele, but he's not typing yet, I'll pass the word.

Thanks,

Beavis

Remember Sabra and Chatilla.

Here's CODEPINK in action at Halloween....

I drive a ten year-old Chevvy pick up, have a War is Not the Answer bumper sticker, a Navy veteran and voted for Cynthia McKinney. Guess I must not be a moonbat. However, if I have to be a moonbat in order to avoid being a blind and feeble-minded disciple of our corporatist, war-mongoring self-appointed masters of the universe....well; I'd rather be a moon bat.

It's wonderful to see the BDN writing this story. I have given up looking at US news outlets for foreign policy reporting or analysis. Ignorance is no excuse with global internet access.

You know why this religious justification for modern Israel's Jewish-supremacist constitution is not talked about in the "main stream media"? Because it would be laughed off the air by a fifth-grader with a Bible. Any faith that depends on fear of thought is doomed. "Those that have much will get more, and those that have little will lose even the little that they have." The Arabic word for "prayer" seems to be the same verb for laying something next to a fire to warm up. Cold hearts and cold minds will not rely on the living God. "In his heart, the fool says, 'There is no God.'"

peter, Cynthia McKinney?????????/

The rest I can live with, but Cynthia McKinney? She's a nut....

Lets put 6 Million Moon Bats (I hate talking like that but) on A Train To the Extermination Camps

And What Few Moon Bats are Left~~Can Now Tell Us How They Feel

It Is just someones imagination That The Whole Mid East Wants Another Holocaust

Againts The Jews

And Anyone In America That Supports Abandoning Israel~Is Supporting Mass Murder

In My Humble Opinion

Our only Friends and Spies in The Mid East~Are You Crazy

The US taxpayer should not be compelled to support a belligerent, apartheid practicing, socialist theocracy that thinks it has a divine right to everything between the Mediterranean and the Euphrates. It's time to end US support for this tribe of warmongering thieves who have been stealing their neighbor's lands ever since Joshua marched on Jericho.

I thought Obama said we were not supposed to "meddle" in the affairs of other Nations?

petersirois - anyone who supports Cynthia McKinley automatically qualifies for lifetime membership in MAA: Moonbats Against America.

That is, "McKinney".

When I read about Israeli army snipers picking off Palestinian women and children in Gaza last year, it reminds me of the scene in "Schindler's List" where the Nazi commandant snipes at Jewish children for nothing more than sport in the concentration camp. So much for the merciful religion of Yahweh... all of the wisdom of the "Good Book" sounds like just another bloodthirsty, authoritarian fairy tale to justify the stealing of another people's land, when read against the backdrop of the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For perspective, think about Israel daring to steal farms and streams and woods here in Maine, backed by the military might of, say, Russia, and see how long it would take before Mainers rose up in righteous anger to take up arms against the invaders, no matter how lopsided the fight.

Cynthia McKinney does "nutty" things like try to enter Gaza with humanitarian relief supplies via boat from Cyprus. Last year her attempt was blocked by Israel's navy, they were boarded, and detained in Israel. My kind of "nut" for sure.

“Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don’t worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and theAmericans know it.”

Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon to Shimon Peres, October 3, 2001, as reported on Kol Yisrael radio. (Certainly the FBI’s cover-up of the Israeli spy ring/phone tap scandal suggests that Mr. Sharon may not have been joking.)

No matter who is right or wrong in the Israel vs Palestine conflict, the US military is paying the price now. We are up to our neck in this conflict with no end in sight and no talk of any peace agreement. We finally have the perpetual war that the military industrial complex has always dreamed of.
