Fire damages boiler room at Domtar mill in Baileyville

BAILEYVILLE, Maine — Firefighters from Baileyville, Princeton and Calais responded early Monday morning to a report of fire in a building at Domtar.

The fire damaged a large building that housed machinery to feed bark to a boiler, company spokesman Scott Beal said.

“There was some damage to the structure itself,” Beal said. “No one was hurt.”

Beal said that during the winter storm over the weekend, a brief power outage knocked out electricity to the mill.

“This may have influenced the fire,” he said, when machinery was restarted. “A stray ember from the boiler could have started it.”

Beal said the fire was reported by employees at about 4 a.m.

All firefighters cleared the scene by 7 a.m.
