Faith Bowl III, a round-table discussion by sports celebrities about the challenges of living the Roman Catholic faith, will air in conjunction with this weekend’s Super Bowl XLIV.

The 30-minute program will air at 5 p.m. Sunday on the Eternal Word Television Network, or EWTN. Pregame coverage will be broadcast at 6 p.m. on WABI-TV, Channel 5, the CBS affiliate in Bangor, and the Super Bowl game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Faith Bowl III was produced by Family Theater Productions in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Athletes for Christ.

The program will feature three major league baseball players:

— Mike Piazza, a catcher, who retired after 16 years spent mostly with the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a 12-time all-star player, and in 1993, he was named “Rookie of the Year” in the National League.

— Mike Sweeney, a designated hitter for the Seattle Mariners in 2009 and a 15-year veteran of major league baseball. He was selected five times to play as an all star from the Kansas City Royals.

— Bobby Keppel, a relief pitcher for the Minnesota Twins, he played in 37 games last year and was the winning pitcher of the Twins’ playoff game with the Detroit Tigers for the American League Central Division title.

Keppel will moderate Sunday’s discussion, which was taped Nov. 19 in Hollywood, Calif., after a Catholic Athletes for Christ retreat. All three men belong to the organization.

“We live in a technological age,” Keppel said in a press release. “We’re too busy and we don’t have time to reflect and retreat and find out what we want. It’s our society; we are so busy.

“It’s unfortunate,” he continued. “I just hope people see this and watch and realize [that] as busy as you guys are, you take the time to reflect, to realize, it is not about you, but about growing in life, giving life with you and your spouse, and the fruits are your children.”

The athletes will discuss the importance of Catholic faith, prayer and a sound Christian family life, according to the press release. The men also will talk about the important role of a husband and father in being a “true man.”

“That’s where we have to redirect our energy,” Piazza says in the broadcast, “to teach our young men, this is what a real man is, being a faithful husband, present father, as well as a provider. ... Don’t live the life others want you to live. Live the life God wants you to live.”
