Railroad files notice to abandon tracks

BANGOR, Maine — Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway said Thursday it has filed a “notice of intent” with the federal Surface Transportation Board to abandon 233 miles of its track in Aroostook and Penobscot counties. This notice is required by the board as a preliminary step in the abandonment process.

The possibility of an abandonment originally was announced in August. Affected lines include track serving Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou and Fort Kent, the railroad said.

Separate Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway lines between Millinocket and the western Maine border with Canada, Brownville and Searsport, and Madawaska to Van Buren are not included in the application.

The railroad said it has suffered substantial operating losses on the lines in the last three years due to low shipping volume and high operating costs.

But the railroad said it continues to meet with the Maine Department of Transportation in an effort to find a solution that would preserve rail service in the area.

“We have been working closely with Maine DOT since the possibility of abandonment was first discussed,” President Robert C. Grindrod said. “We are seeking an alternative solution and consider abandonment the last resort in a process that offers several options short of abandonment.

“We will continue to seek solutions, but we must stop the cash drain that has already and continues to undermine the financial health of the entire company. However, I want to assure our shippers that service will continue during this process, and we are hopeful that an acceptable solution can be found.”

The railroad said it anticipates that the application will be filed in late February and that the proceedings at the Surface Transportation Board will take approximately three months to complete.

Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway began operations in 2003 and operates 754 route miles of track in Maine, New Brunswick, Quebec and Vermont.

Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou and Fort Kent: Which of these is in Penobscot County? I think there is a little more reporting to do here on this story.

As per national and internation laws and treaties, I, on behalf of the Maliseet Nation, herewith serve notice to all readers that the Maliseet Nation reclaims this abandoned property as Maliseet traditional, unceeded tribal lands. No tresspassing. Questions or concernes regarding this claim and Notice may be forwarded to Representative , Maliseet Nation, 41 Elm Street, Houlton, Maine 04730

bdnreader: They want to close/tear up the track from Millinocket to Ft. Kent.....I say do it because they are a Canadian company that had ruined the RR and don't let the Sate or Federal Goverment give them any money because all they will do is take it and run back to Canada and fix those tracks..in Canada..

Also; there is nothing for them to haul from Millinocket to Ft. Kent as another Canadian Company ruined the Great Northern in Millinocket and also east Millinocket; and they also ran with the money back to Canada just like they are doing in Madawaska.

Give them the 'Boot'! and no money!

As far as the 'Maliseets' taking the right of way; I say 'bull**it, they don't or never did own it as it was taken from the original owners that had lad on both sides of the right of way or adjacent to the right of way and should go back to each landowner who now owns their land..

I am not against the Malliseet's; but on this proposed statement I am!

Suck it up Maliseet's; you are not entitled to a free meal all the time..although I do agree with your past injustices from the US government many years ago...

Seriously; the owners of the railroad just want some free money and tax-payers to foot the bill....

The MMA is owned by Rail World, Inc. an American company based in Chicago. Get your facts straight before you rant. It makes you look like a used hankie!

That land was taken from the landowners back when for a 99 year lease. I say it goes back to the landowners!

hankie: You sound a tad bit like one of those ignorant locals from Millinocket who has delusions of granduer thinking that their opinion on anything matters...It don't! Speaking of sucking it up....you should consider doing the same....Millinocket as a paper town is over...time for change...

Mythoughts...you are right at this juncture...but about 25 years ago, a Canadian company bought it and ruined it severly...same as GNP.. or aren't you old enough to remember? I am because I worked for BARR.

Ktaadn...nope, I am an ignorant one from East Mill...and I don't have any delusions of grander; are you French? Because my dictionary spells this different than you do...GRANDER; By Webster:Impressive in size or extent; splendid; etc...

KATAHDIN...YEP, I worked in Millinocket Mill, so what's your point?

Also, I don't or didn't belittle the Maliseet Band as I have too many relatives in the band, so you suck it up ktaadn...as I am surprised that you didn't do this as I feel you are quite critical....

Not quite sure if it should go back to the landowners. Done some extensive research on this in the "Valley" and all the land I looked at was bought by Fish River Railway at the turn of the century. I think I will buy the rail line and post it all like you folks from the South are doing here in the North.

The state of Maine should buy it up to keep to keep the railroad from leaving. After all, Georgia Pacific stayed after we bought Juniper Ridge State Park in Old Town.

The Maliseet claim underlies any other claims of ownership, including previous French, English, then British and, finally United States or Maine. History shows that Maine and, for that matter, New England would not even be part of the United States, nor would the United States even exist, but for the Maliseets protecting Americans during the first hours, days, weeks and months of the so-called American Revolution (British civil war). No land has ever been lawfully acquired, taken in battle, or purchased from Maliseets ANYWHERE. It is for that reason Maliseets can and do assert and serve notice of their lawful interest in land and EXPECT that to be legally and politically honored and, if not respected hankie and everyone else who may receive this further NOTICE. Ask the Irvings of New Brunswick of the Maliseet position and what I am talking about, they'll tell you in clear terms. Like death and taxes, the Maliseet land interest in this situation is enforceable and, ultimately, unavoidable.

get over yourself, Maliseets You have had enough freebee's the land is not yours anymore nor will it ever be. All yuo do is look for everything for free form the rest of the country. Get with the times

Mr./Ms. AmbroseBear needs to be happy someone like Stalin or Mao didn't show up here first.

To everyone looking at these posts AmbroseBear does not speak for the Maliseet Tribe as a whole. He is only one member so any comments he has posted is his opinion alone.

hey look here soibudk, or what ever name that is you are using....As a proud tribal member and as a member that contributes to this economy we do not look for everything free .... Just as in any race of people there are some bad apples that reflect poorly on the rest.

Dear Myrna, I acknowledge your comments. I am curious as to how you know how many Maliseets I speak for at any given time, because there are have been, literally, thousands. It is what I have been appointed to do by my Chiefs. You, however, may have had such an appointment as well, and may not simply be speaking for yourself. If that is true, I would be pleased to meet with you and discuss any differences or similarities of opinion. Regardless of whether or not that happens, I am confident that, with regard to Maliseet land interests, I have simply echoed the position of the Maliseet leadership and people in saying that the underlying land interest remains an unceeded, never purchased, never taken in battle, Maliseet land interest that is enforceable and, ultimately, unavoidable. Do you disagree with THAT position or not not. Because, like I suspect, you do agree with me, you have no basis for your comment. This Maliseet Treaty of July 19, 1776 speaks to the Maliseet position. Again, I merely, and consistently, echo that position, as I have been previously called upon by my Chiefs many times to do on ALL of our behalf and I will never vary that position. In a sense, I am like an arrow that has been released from the bow, I can not be compelled to move left or right from the path I have taken toward the target of Maliseet rights recognition. If you think I am wrong, that is, as you yourself said, simply you speaking for yourself and not the entire Maliseet Tribe. Nidlayig

Dear Mr. Ambrosebear,

Are you drunk??????? As I am aware that you have just recently been added to the Houlton Band of Maliseets Tribal Roll. In which the last I knew we have only one chief who has not appointed you to speak for everybody let alone as a tribal representative as you call yourself. As for meeting you knowing your history, I would not meet you in a dark alley! And when I speak about bad apples that reflect on our tribe poorly I categorize you in that group.....crook!!!

Please be advised that the comments submitted by AmbroseBear regarding this article "railroad files notice to abandon tracks" He has not been appointed to represent the official decisions, opinions or position of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians.

This is posted on behalf of Tribal Chief and Council of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians.
