CARIBOU – As predicted, parts of Aroostook County and other parts of the state saw sub-freezing temperatures early Friday morning, with record breaking cold recorded in Caribou.

According to Rich Norton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Caribou, Caribou broke a previous record of 29 degrees that was set in 1995. On Friday morning, the temperature dipped to 27 degrees.

While that broke a record in Caribou, the city was still not as cold as Allagash, were the temperature fell to 25 degrees.

A freeze warning was in effect Friday morning from the St. John Valley to interior Down East Maine, as meteorologists had predicted that clear skies and light winds would combine with a cold Canadian airmass to force temperatures to plunge to record or near-record territory early Friday.

Temperatures were predicted to be in the low to mid 20s across northern and central parts of the state.

Across coastal Down East Maine, temperatures were expected to plunge into the mid 30s south of the Airline Road, with pockets of freezing or near-freezing temperatures in the region. A frost advisory has been issued for that region.

Norton said that temperatures in Aroostook County ranged from the low of 27 degrees to a high of 28 degrees.

Caribou and Presque Isle both saw temperatures of 27 degrees, while temperatures of 28 degrees were recorded in Eagle Lake, Fort Kent and Van Buren.

In Penobscot County, a low of 28 degrees was recorded in Shin Pond, while Grindstone, Old Town and Patten all saw temperatures of 29 degrees. It was 32 degrees in Bangor, according to the NWS.

In Piscataquis County, temperatures at Sebec Lake were measured at 27 degrees, while it was 30 degrees at Blanchard. The highest temperature - 34 degrees - was recorded in Greenville.

In Washington County, it was 28 degrees in Danforth and 35 degrees in Cutler. Machias and Whiting recorded temperatures of 29 degrees, while a high of 36 degrees was recorded in Eastport.

Bar Harbor, in Hancock County, also saw a temperature of 36 degrees, as did Bass Harbor. It was 38 degrees in Acadia National Park and 41 degrees in Stonington.

Norton said that temperatures are predicted to warm slightly over the next few days before another dip in temperatures next week

Good temps hopefully winter is on it's way!!

Burrrr!!!!!!!!! This is why i'm glad I now live in Fl. Its a balmy 93 here.

What happened to global warming? Another falsehood that millions of Americans have fallen prey to and think that they can change just by changing a few of their habits. How sad!

Hang on to your hats......WINTER IS ON IT'S WAY !!!!!

Someone go get Al Gore and bring him to Maine and check out the recored low temps!!

In spite of the Hyped-up headlines, last night's temperatures were neither record setting nor unusual and do not prove or disprove anything. Houlton has recorded freezing temperatures as early as mid August and Caribou has had readings in the 20's in early September. The 27 degree reading this morning just smooths the curve, filling in for an inadequate history that only goes back to 1939. BTW, last year they were setting record highs at the end of September. CAROLYN you may consider 93 balmy but I think it's stinking HOT!

I'm so glad Al Gore finaly got this global warming thing under control. I wonder what he'll do next......... ship a few polar bears to maine I guess.

Why in the heck do so many people think that Florida is the only place to go on this earth that has warmer temperatures! Seems people were born with a magnet inside their brain that tells them the opportunity to migrate is nigh...and Florida is waiting! Florida...into Tampa, for instance is only 30 hours drive from Bangor. Not too bad. Has not anyone attempted to go into Texas, Arizona, Nevada, California, Hawaii, or the other way around, into the Bahama's, Haiti, and even Europe has warmer temperatures, too...even many points in the far east in Asia. In the Philippines, our average temperatures are higher than Florida...and although I have pictures of snow in Florida...we get no snow here. The article is depicting lower temperatures in Caribou...in Aroostook County. Focus on that. Temperatures are coming down as the earth makes its turn into the winter solstice period. Although, for me, it would be nice to get the tips of my fingers so cold they tingle, and my face and nose red with a color other than a deep tan I have now. To see your "breath" again would be a nice feeling. But, there are those times ahead that most of the entire US will need heating fuel in some form or another this winter season. I cannot tell you what to do, but just be warm and be careful of home fires. Now, we need to get some UM professor to analyze this situation and come up with an intelligent answer to the cold weather issue.

Nice article and good comments. Thanks to all.

Dear misinformed readers, as Al Gore or anyone familiar with global warming could tell you; one of the consequences of climate change can be a mini ice-age. This has happened before, and very quickly. So if you can't handle the possibility of encroaching glaciers in the next couple of years, I might suggest you start looking up your long lost relatives who have alredy migrated south, only don't look up the ones on the coasts because probability would suggest that before the glaciers will come the flooding. Whatch gonna do?

We are killing our planet we are told by Algore and climate experts. Global warming we are told is a warming of the planet. Now we are being told global warming is really the planet getting colder before it gets warmer. What an " inconvenien" explanation

How long is this "mini ice-age" supposed to last? According to Algore, we only have slightly over 7 years before we all fry.

Or maybe, o great pompous and arrogant jaguarsky, you'd like to share your prophecy with the rest of us? When exactly is this mini ice-age going to hit? Will Newsweek publish an article decrying global cooling, just as it did back in 1975? Will the scientists once again dream up plans of covering the glaciers with soot so that they'll melt?

Honestly, you and your predictions of doom are too funny for words.
