Four Plum Creek plan protesters arrested

A state office building was locked down for several hours and several protesters arrested Monday in the latest flare-up over Plum Creek’s controversial development plan for the Moosehead Lake region.

Four members of the group Maine Earth First! chained themselves together using U-shaped bicycle locks wrapped around their necks in the hallway of the Land Use Regulation Commission office in Augusta.

The four protesters and other members of Earth First! also disrupted work in the office building by chanting, blowing horns and stomping on the ground. Group members refused to leave the office corridor and demanded a meeting with LURC staff.

Earth First! and other groups are upset with LURC’s tentative endorsement of an amended plan that would allow Plum Creek to rezone land for 975 house lots and two resorts near Moosehead. The commission is expected to vote Wednesday on a list of recommended changes that would be necessary for Plum Creek to receive LURC approval for the concept plan.

Officers from the state police, capitol police and other agencies eventually arrested the four after they refused to unlock themselves and leave.

The four have been charged with trespassing and were still being held Monday evening at the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta because they refused to give their names to police.

Other Earth First! members later identified the four to the media as Emily Paine, Meg Gilmartin, Kyla Hersey-Wilson and Megan Wilson.

In a statement, Department of Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan acknowledged that Plum Creek’s proposal has generated intense emotions on both sides. McGowan, whose department oversees the agency, said LURC’s public review allowed all views to be aired.

“This protest was not a helpful way to bring forward differing opinions,” McGowan said.

But Earth First! member Logan Perkins said the protesters felt they needed to “go direct and demand to be heard” after the commission tentatively endorsed Plum Creek’s proposal despite significant public outcry, especially over development on Lily Bay.

“Differing opinions have been brought forth in a whole variety of ways in the past year … and the public has not been heard,” Perkins said.

Earth First! members plan to meet with LURC director Catherine Carroll today.

How can people be arrested for trespassing into a public building that their tax money is paying for? As for the protestors I say right on! It's now or never!

Here in Florida we would have made use of the u-bolts around their necks saving us much need money a proper noose typically costs.

Earth First is an environmental terrorist group. What are these things doing in Maine?

mrclam

fyi

Plum Creek is an international environmental terrorist group .

.Earth First is a group dedicated to the prevention of corporate raping of our natural recouces for the benefit of a few short term profits .

Have we learned nothing about corporate greed and corruption lately

Does Moosehead Lake have to be a victim of another wall street screw up .

ps what are you doing here ?

real mainer

Mallett,

FYI, Capitalism and economic development is what has provided you the right to sit at your computer and sound-off with unfounded and severely misguided statements. If you do not like capitilism and economic development...which is the heartbeat and fundamental basis for this country, by the way...move to Canada, or some other socialist state.

Plum Creek's plan provides more conservation land than ever would be aquired if this land was broken up and developed in pieces. The 'environmentalist' movement needs to grow up, actually finish college, and think about how their actions create a negative public perception of their agenda. This negative perception only makes it harder to achieve a change to policies that actually have a negative impact on the environment.

Right on, they were all women...figures, the men just sit around and "talk", while the women get things done. Earth First! will protect the earth by any means necessary. So sad that a group like this needs to exist, that we are not all keeping in our minds, hearts and actions....the earth first. Way to go women! And Mallett: "whatev!"

Live and let live...I think protests like that just make those people look ridiculous. I don't have an opinion on their group. We need all the help we can get regarding the slaughter of our woodlands here in Maine. Geez, seems to me most of that slaughter is done by good ole folks (and companies) right here in Maine!

If Earth First! members would have gone in acting like adults instead of chaining themselves together like idiots, they may have gotten some respect from the public. They may have the right to be in a public building, but they need to respect the other people that have the right to be there. I'm sure a small child there with parents would be frightened by such stupidity. (or may even try noosing himself at home) I for one would have thought differently of them if they had done this peacefullly. Not agreeing with someone or something is ok, as is protesting, but to put bike locks around your neck is quite another thing! What if one of you had fallen on a stairs? Grow up and gain respect of the people who DO make a difference in the state! Get yourselves some true mature representation and then you'll get things done. I belong to environmentalist groups, but would not join this one!

Don't be so quick to condem the Earth Firsters as being immature or inappropriate. Take a deep breath and realize that "grown Up" and "appropriate" means of engaging in dialouge have continually been disregarded. The public outcry has been enormous. Its followed the proper protocal, but you see that ultimately it is ineffective. Powerful interests of real estate developers continue to do as they please. The earth first tactics are calculated and designed to draw attention to the fact that conventional means of giving voice and power to the people are not working... the voice of the people continues to be disregarded. I applaud the tactics of the protesters. It takes tremendous courage to take a stand for something you believe deeply in. Maybe if more people would take a stand for what they know in their heart is right and not worry about how others will think of them we'd have a more just, a more sane, a more loving compassionate world. Bravo to the four protestors! We see our precious land being destroyed everywhere and once its gone, its gone. The proposed development of Plum creek is shameful and greedy.

what did they expect a private hearing. LURC held public hearings for this kind of group. They are playing like little spoiled brats, I`m takeing my ball.

Plum creek has the right as owners to develop this land. why doesn` this earth group raise the money and by the land. But they are only concerned with

taking from others. If it was me I`d develop it or shut the woods down and no tresspassing

Well, shouldn't someone speak up for those who are affected but can not speak on the matter ...the resident frogs, for example ?

Though the method selected by these women is particularly unattractive (and therefore less effective) it is far from Ecoterrorism. Just ask the scientists and faculty at a place like UC Santa Cruz who have had their homes and autos firebombed by animal rights activist-idiots.

Hey McGowan; I think I take issue with your statement that claims that “LURC’s public review allowed all views to be aired.” Did you know that PRIOR to of the public’s first chance to formally comment on the proposed plan at the state wide hearings, that Plum Creek clearly stated that they have made three revisions, there will not be a fourth. This not only shows a disregard by the applicant for the permitting process, but is insulting and degrading to the thousands who spent a lot of time and effort trying to participate in the process since then and should not have been tolerated by LURC. The public was falsely led to believe that the whole idea behind the hearings was to incorporate the ideas and comments from the public, lifelong residents, and wildlife and conservation professionals. Instead, all the hearings amounted to was a venting session for an understandably frustrated public.

McGowan; How can you claim that LURC’s public review allowed all views to be aired to the board when 3 of the 7 voting members of the board didn’t even bother to show up for the January public hearings in Greenville you referenced? Please tell me how you think that the board fairly incorporated public comments, if the board did not even hear them? It is obvious to me now that they these board members had already made up their minds and had no interest in following the permitting process of incorporating public testimony and input from workshops any longer. This clearly is not how a fair review process should work and in my mind makes the public hearing process unfair and corrupt.

McGowan: Did you know that months after the public’s comment period was over, LURC suddenly began promoting a THIRD resort at Moose Bay and additional development at Brassua Lake. How can you say that this is a fair process without the opportunity for the public, affected residents, or wildlife and conservation professionals to evaluate and comment on the impact of this 11th hour additional development? To me, it should not be LURC’s place to promote development for applicants that has absolutely no type of regulatory review or public input.

Unfortunately, these and other legal missteps and breakdowns in the review process by LURC have result in frustrated concerned citizens staging sit-ins as a desperate last minute attempt to finally have their voice heard and their concerns addressed.

It's easy to be arrested in either a public or privte place. Simply do not leave when asked. Pinheads!! According to Earth first if people don't do as you want then throw a tantrum. The LURC hearings are not the end of any further proceedings. There are other avenues also.

stop the corruption in maine woods.... now before it's too late.... will they be selling us back our own wood??

KYLIE00-learn how to spell dear.

Atleast the police officers had a good handle to grab to throw those idiots in jail.

Hope those morons try to block my route when I am going into a Plum Creek development with my heavy equipment and chain saws to work so I can feed my family. "Earth who? Never saw them"

Come on people you had your chance to voice your opinion now go away...

"stop the corruption in maine woods.... now before it's too late.... will they be selling us back our own wood??"

Wonderful socialist mentality there. you own the wood? They own the land therefor they own the wood. should they offer it for sale in what ever form it takes it's you option to either pay or not to pay.

Sounds like those morons will get some quiet time that they so badly need.

Diana22-Learn how to capitalize and punctuate properly, Dear.

It's just too bad the officers couldn't have taken the keys to the locks along with all the rest of their toys and left them overnight in the hallway to think about their actions all night. Spoiled brats deserve to be treated as such!

Lorilee...great comments and I agree with you totally. Nothing wrong with voicing ones concerns and even physically and outwardly standing up for a cause but do it with respect acting like an adult and not an idiot! Now, after reading comments by dirigodad & Diana22, I am using my spell check!

well all you tree lovers, go and tie yourself to a tree in lily bay. greenville is a four season area for all. but why is it so depress? because all you tree lovers don't spend your money there.

how would you like it if everyone told you what to do with your land that you bought and pay taxes on. i would tell you to stick it.

greenville needs to be devoloped.

for all the bull that plum has put up with, if i was them , i would put two of the tallest highrises in new england there and a wind mill to power them.

maybe there are not enough trees in maine ,so you all should go plant some.

then you can smile and say i'm the highest taxes state in the good ole USA.

we are all for devolopment right?

First Earth looks like a Lesbian focus group who has lost their focus.
