Republican vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, acknowledges the crowd during a campaign stop at the Bangor Airport, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, in Bangor, Maine.

BANGOR, Maine — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin spoke about the role of government, gun rights and the promise of America in addressing thousands of people Thursday at a campaign rally for John McCain’s presidential campaign.

Addressing about 6,000 people in a hangar at the Bangor International Airport, the Alaska governor on Thursday stuck to familiar themes of limited government, lower taxes and the right to bear arms. She listed energy and government reform among her top priorities.

“On Nov. 4, it’s going to come down to what you believe in,” she said. “What John McCain and I believe in is what Ronald Reagan believed in.”

“America is not the problem — America is the solution,” she added.

McCain’s campaign has focused resources on Maine in hopes of coming away with at least one electoral vote on Election Day.

The campaign believes Palin, a moose-hunting hockey mom whose snowmobile-racing husband visited the state last weekend, will connect with voters in a region where hunting, fishing and snowmobiling are popular.

Before Palin’s speech, country music star Lee Greenwood sang the “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless the USA.”

Palin spoke about the affinity between Maine and Alaska.

“I feel like I’m at home. I see the Carhartts and the steel-toed boots...and the NRA hats,” she said, referring to the work clothes brand and National Rifle Association supporters.

Palin said the people of Maine know that high taxes are not the way to “grow the economy.” Maine’s taxes are among the nation’s highest.

“The solution is to stop spending so much doggone money,” she said.

Luke Laplante drove nearly 200 miles from the northern Maine town of Hamlin to see Palin speak because “history’s being made.”

He said he thinks the McCain-Palin ticket is better prepared to take care of the economy. “Plus, she’s new blood,” he said.

McCain can win one electoral vote if he takes Maine’s 2nd Congressional District which, like Alaska, looms large, the biggest in geographic terms east of the Mississippi, a patchwork of forests and lakes that are blanketed by snow for much of the year.

“Certainly the 2nd District is within his sights. He can win this district,” said Mark Brewer, political science professor at the University of Maine.

Bob Meyers, executive director of the 30,000-member Maine Snowmobile Association, says it’s no surprise that the Palins will find kindred spirits in the state’s rural north.

“I can understand how the lifestyle of the Palins in particular would resonate with the folks up there,” Meyers said.

Focusing on a single district could make sense in Maine, one of only two states — Nebraska is the other — that allows its electoral votes to be split. Under the system adopted in 1969 in Maine, even a statewide loser could grab one of the state’s four electoral votes.

In a close race, Republicans can’t afford to write off a single electoral vote, but Republicans hope that a strong showing in the 2nd District will help them sweep the entire state, where unenrolled or “independent” voters comprise the largest bloc of voters.

Maine last voted for a Republican for president in 1988, when Kennebunkport summer resident George H.W. Bush won the state. And political scientists say that’s unlikely to change, even if McCain and Palin managed to carry the 2nd District.

Sandy Maisel, director of the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs at Colby College in Waterville, acknowledged that the 2nd District by reputation is more conservative and has more evangelical Christians than the 1st District.

Maisel said he still believes that Barack Obama will take all four Maine votes but doesn’t rule out the chance of McCain riding the coattails of Republican incumbent Susan Collins, a native of northern Maine, in Maine’s hotly contested Senate race.

Brewer agreed. “I don’t think it’s impossible, but boy I think it’s unlikely (McCain-Palin) will take the entire state,” he said.

Democrat Barack Obama has no plans to cede the state. Democrats have more than 30 offices set up across the state to promote Obama and other candidates, said Jessica Santillo, Maine communications director of Obama for America.

Are you kidding me? Carhartts, steel toed boots and NRA hats??? " DOGGONE" it!! - Not all of us in Maine are uneducated, with poor grammar! I can't believe anyone would consider voting in someone with such poor professionalism.

Well Doggone it, Palin was in Maine and I missed it. Where has the news coverage for the past 3 days been on this?

Aw shucks - I hope for her sake she did a better job advocating for the McCain-Palin ticket than McCain did at the debate last night.

Is it true under Obama's tax break that 95% of the work force will get a tax break? But only 60% actually work, so the other 35% on welfare and unemployed will also get a tax break. Robbing the rich to pay the poor? Just wondering?

Caribou0102: Your characterization of indiginous residents who adorn Carhartts, steel toed boots, and NRA hats as uneducated is quite interesting. Having a degree in Engineering Physics I find my choice of that type of apparel and membership of the NRA to be comfoprtable and rewarding respectfully. I don't find it personally insulting, however you may find a few folks out there who do, and my want to give you a roucious "rogering"!

Tee hee! Oh SteveyDee you're such a joker. No, of course that's not true. Only TAXPAYERS, meaning "people who pay taxes," get a tax break. You and your antics.

IF YOU BELIEVE IN SMALL BUSINESS AND FREE ENTERPRISE YOU NEED TO VOTE IN REPUBLICAN SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES. IF YOU BELIEVE LARGE STRONG LABOR UNIONS ARE THE BEST COURSE FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS THEN VOTE FOR THE DEMS.

GUN RIGHTS?? Hey I love hunting as much as the next guy, but guns are not at the top of my list of issues this year. It's not like the Dems would take away my hunting rifles anyway.(regardless of what the NRA and the Repubs would tell you) My right to own a AK 47? Maybe. But I think Jobs, the economy, national security and health care are really what most voters want to hear about.

Mother taught me that if I couldn't say anything good, to keep my mouth shut. I'm having a real struggle minding my mom.

caribou0102 hey hey hey watch the isults... There any many educated people in this state that describes... Carharts, NRA hats, steel toe boots... And for the ones who are not educated it is just as much of an insult!! I am sure they work harder than you caribou0102 and by work I mean accomplish something.... Not everyone is meant to be a wll versed idiot like yourself! She is not unprofessional... She is relatable to most of the working class folk... W-O-R-K-I-N-G not welfare hogs or moonbats like yourself that degrade anyone who doesn't have the same views as yourself..

You are "darn tootin" Remember Delibamas plan of $250k.... for small business it means Gross Receipts not net profit.... The majority of small business take in over $250k before expenses... We need new business, jobs... Stop taking the employers and get our jobs back from overseas where Clinton sent them!

anne_of _mdi.....You don't get it. A LARGE popluation of people work and don't pay taxes. They will receive a check, money collected from taxpayers. That is Obama's redistribution of taxes plan.!!! Not exactly a motivating program to keep people working in the US! It' scalled socialism and it didn't work when the pigrims tried it (nobody wanted to work, it was just as easy not to), and it hasn't worked in Europe. Why would we want to adopt tht type of government? You can be sure with an extreme liberal in the white house, and a VERY liberal congress (Reid and Pelosi especially) that whatever any of them want will go through. Alienating ourselves from our closest friend in the middle east isn't a safe idea, particularly right now with terrorism on he icrease! Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

Maybe William Ayres will come visit Maine on behalf of OBombA............ what a treat that would be

Wow, Tikitorch, guess I torched a little flame under you, eh? I just really wish Palin would stop talking down to the people she addresses. But, apparently name calling and Palin admirers go hand and hand.

There wouldn't be too many TAXPAYERS to get a tax break under Obama. If you tax those with incomes over $250,000. you are talking about almost all small business-the cornor market or laundrymat, Joe's plumbing service, farmers, dairies, logging businesses, fishermen...So, if they must already pay over 35% in taxes and get taxed more, they will lay off their workers or simply go out of business. These small enterprises are what keeps America going. To a low income person $250,000. or more may sound like alot. But after a business pays wages of $20,000.-$40,000. per worker per year, pays Unemployment Tax, Healthcare for employees, maintains vehicles/boats/trucks or replaces expense equipment. pays overhead-lights, tel., heat, fuel, feed, etc., they sometimes just eek by. When times are good and they make more profit, they hire more people, they buy new equipment (which keeps boat builders, truck manufacturers, computer companies, etc in business and allows them also to hire more workers!). With the US already the 3rd highest country to do business in because of liberal democrats who have raised taxes, people leave the country for Canada, Mexico, Berlize, the Scandanavian countries, etc. Yes, Exon makes millions, they also employ thounsands of people. But, after wages, and expenses barely make 6% profit. I am surprised how many Americans don't understand BASIC economics. I have updated my passport to leave this country if Obama is elected.

AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

People need to realize that our election system is bought and paid for by global interest and that the people we think are working for us, are in fact working for a global government. Obama and Mccain are both the same. It doesn't matter who wins because they work for the same hidden agendas. I think they are both just as bad. They hate America and they hate you. Down to the New World Order. Just google the recent clip of Glen Beck (Of all people) talking about the NWO and how we are headed for Martial Law in America. We should wake up to the truth before its too late. Palin is a puppet, just like the rest of them. For those who want to dismiss what I say or argue it, your all in a hypnotic trance and until you break free from it, you will always be under mind control. Just keep drinking fluoride, eating GMO foods and doing whatever the TV tells you.

Indeed it is astounding!!!

The top tax rate is 35% for anyone making $175,000 and up (married filing separately) or $349,700 and up (single) is subject to a flat tax of 35%. Plus they get a myriad of deductions

Furthermore, the top one percent in the US hauled in more than 21 percent of all personal income in 2005, and the tax system essentially levies the poor, the middle class and even the upper middle class to subsidize the rich.

Perhaps their unbridled greed has jaded them.

Palin is glaringly unqualified to be VP!! She was a horrendous choice, one that shows lack of sound judgment. This nit-wit could very well end up being POTUS!! There are plenty of conservatives who would even agree here!!

Thank you PaleShadows!

Furthermore, charisma and competence are not equal. I wish people would stop being so shallow!

MainBad: I believe you misconstrued what I was saying. My husband and father, grandfather and uncles all love to wear Carhatt and steel toed boots for their jobs as well. I just can't believe some of the things the McCain-Palin ticket use to get to the hearts of Mainers! I think she may be educated enough to give a professional speech...but you'd never, ever know it.

It is 95% of TAXPAYORS who will get a tax break from Obama, and only 5% of TAXPAYORS who will pay MORE under his plan.

More than 95% of small business folks in Maine earn much less than a quarter of a million dollars yearly; and those few that earn more can obviate most taxes by being fair to their employees.

It is the Republicans that have overtaxed the middle class ---not the Democrats.

Mainers, don't be fooled again !!!! McCain is a Bush clone. Take an honest look at the Bush mess. If the last 8 years have been enjoyable to you, by all means assume the position and let McCain and Palin have their way with you for the next 4, assuming we live that long.

I think we need to step back and regroup. The Democrats talk good about the Republicans and the Republicans continue to bash the Democrats.

JOE THE PLUMBER FOR PRESIDENT!

I like some Carhartt stuff, am a member to the NRA, but I'm a software developer - so are you calling ME stupid, too, caribou0102?? Nice stereotype on YOUR part, not Palins. SHE meant it as a compliment.

I HAVE BEEN VOTING FOR 47 YEARS AND AM A COLLEGE GRAD(FOR CARIBOU0102) AND IF SOMETHING SHOULD HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE I TRUST THE USA TO SARAH PALIN BEFORE JOE BIDEN.

PaleShadows:I disagree... The middle classes fund WELFARE... not the rich... the rich do get too many breaks... But I guess they can afford to buy them... We need to rethink our welfare systems in this country.... The liberals think everything is a RIGHT.. This is the land of OPPORTUNITY not the land of RIGHTS... We are all given the opportunity to get an education, work and serve our country etc.. It is not the fault of those who choose to work and earn a living to pay the way for the lazy people of this country.. Unless you can't physically work or are Elderly then in order to receive benefits the people of this country should have to earn them in some way... We are laughed at by other countries, they dub us the Welfare Country... What message is that sending our youth?

Are you kidding me SteveyDee......go back and read over the entries blow by blow and you tell me who is mean spirited.

Guns are good. Carhartts are too stiff. Levis are softer.

Calm down... Its not good for your heart to get wound up DEE!!!!!!!

PaleShadows-- The top 1% of wage earners already pay over 1/3 of all federal income taxes (about 34%), and the top 50% of wage earners pay 97%! Levy the poor my butt!.. Most of them work under the table, don't report all of their income, and sponge off of the state anyway... Give me a break with your redistribution of income mantra that you Dems love to spout!!

The POOR pay little or NO taxes and receive many hand outs from the rest of taxpayers-foodstamps, Tanf, Medicaid (Mainecare), fuel assistance, child care assistance, and more. I'm not sure what some people think is a" myraid of deductions"? Stocks that appreciate in value pay a CAPTIAL Gains, interest income figures out the same as wages. I was married to a retired Lt.Col. who worked as an airline pilot after retiring from the military. We had many investments; a few lost money, but most appreciated in value. We paid tax on the added value, just as if we had gone out and worked for wages for that amount. We had two sailboats, one of which we rented; but never made money on it because it cost more to maintain and winter store the two vessels. We were upper middle class, not rich; we , nor none of our friends ever received any subsidies!! My husband retired after 25 years of military service, including a fighter pilot in Viet Nam, and HAD to return to work to financially survive and PAY TAXES FOR THE 40% OF PEOPLE TOO LAZY TO WORK, WHO WANT GOVERMENT TO HAND THEM LIFE ON A PLATTER.

I think I would rather stab myself in the eyeballs than vote for the possibility of this person to have the slightest possibility of being president. The fact that John McCain chose her over far more experienced candidates shows me his complete loss of rational thinking. In 34 years I have never voted for a Democrat for anything. I guess there is a first time for everything.

Please tell me why this man with his limited experience cannot own up to 1 of his so called ties... His pasor, Ayers, the monies received from Fannie-Freddie over 100K in 2 years and now this..."Barack Obama says he only had limited ties to ACORN, and they began in 1995. But other encounters with the group, plus a voter-registration drive he conducted called Project Vote three years earlier, calls his account into question. "

Some keep commenting on Palin's inexperience, or incompetence.......where do you get this from? Doesn't Obama seem to have about the same amount? What has he done that is so wonderful that could'nt be matched with good Palin has done? They are about the same age, have been in the public eye for about the same amount of time, Please explain to me me why you would rather stab yourself in the eye than see that.

and you Republicans think all for me and none for you !!!! thats called greed!!!!!!! and that's what got this country into the mess it's in

no barbra exxon/mobile made 4 billion in in profit PORFIT MEANS AFTER THE BILLS ARE paid!!!!!

Excuse me, that's not how all republican's think. I work a 55-60 hour week to support my family, I have to try very hard to make sure everything is taken care of at my home. I work all weekend making sure household things are taken care of. That's called hard work!!! Why should I give my money to someone who doesn't want to work - I am not including the disabled or elderly in this comment - I am speaking of the able bodies American's who had the same choices I did and chose not to react - you know why most people don't recognize a good opportunity.....it usually comes disquised as hard work.

For everyone who feels we should spread the wealth around, you should not need the goverment to show you how to do it. Go ahead and find a person who choses to live off the system and give them your money. Try and help them, show them how to have a good work ethic and how to manage thier money. You won't get far, if they wanted it, they would already have it.

OBAMA couldn't tell the truth if his life depended upon it. He and his wife are close friends with Ayers, and the Obamas were at a dinner party in the Ayers home when Obama announced his presidency. People should do research on terrorist Ayers and Nazi George Sorus, both of whom live in Obama's neighborhood; They are CLOSE FRIENDS who have parties together. The anti-American "church" the Obamas attended tells one alot about what the man thinks.

tikitorch I am democrat and I don't think wellfare is a good thing...but do feel that there should be help out there to get people working.... a lot of people wanted to work it see it every day....but if they work even for minimum wage they lose all benifit....and then can't feed the kids or afford daycare...we need a system with more help for those are willing to help themselves.....

Searoses, you sound like you are a good, caring person and we do need people who care as much as you do. What I feel though is everyone has to climb the ladder. Only a few get to bypass all of life's lessons. If they got a job for minimum wage and let's say they lost their benefits (I always assumed benefits were parts of contribution), if they would just stick with the job, show up everyday and do a GOOD job, they would advance. Who ever said life wouldn't be tough. Typically bad decisions go them to the low down place they are at. If they don't have to struggle and work through tough times, when do we draw the line with them?

I attended the Palin rally today to allow me to find SOMETHING about this woman I could find worth supporting. I tried, but its not there. I can let go of folksly, "snowmobilin', gun totin'" manner of speaking - albeit condescending. I can rise above her narrow focus on a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. However, that this VP candidate speaks only in soundbites and says NOTHING substantive is insulting to those of us who are truly worried about the future. It takes more than great hair and a good pair of legs to be an effective leader. With the "drill baby drill" quote (not once, but twice) Sarah Palin reminds me of a female Dick Cheney and that should be enough to scare off even the most dedicated Republican. I tried to find something good...I can't.

Dee2008 agree with you... I have worked all my life and lived on peanut butter sandwiches ..when I had to but if youare a single mom with car payments heating...house.. and you make 300.00 weekly before taxes... wellfare is deside on gross not bring home.. you can't live on that gas for your car and heating and other things eat that right up the you have to feed and buy clothes for your kids....what do you do when can't make ends meet and you could if you just had a little help....I gladly pay taxes to help alittle but not to support..

For you folks that keep pointing at ACORN as an attempt to steal the election let me say this. ACORN is under investigation for voter registration fraud. The workers that register voters get paid by the signature. Some of them used dead peoples names and others that were not signed up to vote. They tried to get paid for these signatures but got caught. I'm sorry but this will not effect the election. Dead men can't go to the polls and those who's names were put on the rolls unknown to them will not vote either. So there will be no stealing the election. There was only an attempt by employees of ACORN to steal Obamas money for work that was not performed.

Sacrifice. About 20 years ago, I was a single mother of one. I made about $8.00 per hour. I know how hard it is. A car payment indicates to me, they have a newer car - that's not a necessity. Get a room mate or live with a family member. There are ways to make it. Believe me if welfare ended today, no more assistance. These people would find a way to make it. The same way you would or I would

Well that is a shock, sicntired, I am speechless that the people that work for acorn would try and cheat the system.

That's a bit simplistic dontcha think?

8.00 an hour twenty years ago suggests you didnt NEED welfare and were quite fortunate to make 8.00 an hour in that era.

Also, how does a car payment equate to a newer car?

I agree that the entire welfare system needs revamping, but our the issues at hand are bit more complex than that!

This is NOT just a welfare issue. Will it really take 4 more years with McSame to convince you?

Furthermore I dont think anyone condones ACORNS actions, but the fact that its being used to smear Obama's campaign is BS.

You do realize that McCain had ties as well?

And to answer an earlier post of "why" I believe Obama to be the better choice....Because McSame has been in bed with everyone along the way. He owes waaaayyyy to many favors. He is wishy washy when it comes to our eneregy and ecomonic crisis. McCain and Palin are attempting to push THEIR views down the American peoples throat. Palin has only been Gov 2yrs and any accomplishments she assumes credit for were on ALREADY on her desk. She has already abused her power in her short time in office and I'm scared to death of her becoming our next PODUS!

Palin does NOT represent the women of this country! She is nothing more then a beauty queen.

As an educated American women I resent that Palins approach to the whitehouse as vp is so marketing oriented. When she debated Biden she discusses her position like she was a beauty queen or something. As though her job was to hug babies and open supermarkets.

It genuinely bothers me that she approaches all of this as though she might win miss congeniality or something.

She does not possess the competence required to run our great nation...period!!!

DEE2008, where in the world did you work 20 years ago where you made $8.00 an hour? Gotta agree with PaleShadows, 20 years ago at that rate, you certainly would not have needed welfare! And a car payment DOES not indicate a newer car. Some people have to buy where they can, the car dealers know that, and charge outrageous prices for a junker. Its true, you can make it, but not all people are the same, or have the same grit. Younger people are not the same as they used to be. I raised 6, worked 2 jobs for many years while I was getting a degree and never asked anyone for anything! And it's certainly true, a lot of things need revamping, along with this welfare system. So who knows??

You may very well get your wish Paleshadows. I am just as concerned for our country as you are, for obviously different reasons. Who's right and who's wrong.....who knows. Be fair though.....if Obama's asscociation with acorn, rev wright, Ayers is no big deal, than tell me again why is what Palin did a big deal. You can't pick and choose what is an issue and what is not. For the same reasons you are hoping America does not get sucked in by Palin's looks, I am hoping they won't be sucked in by Obama's smoth talk.

barbra, you are thick as a brick. You know, Jesus could come down right now and tell you that Obama is not "in " with Ayers, and you wouldn't believe him. You have so much nasty stuff stuck up in your head, you don't know which way is up. Don't listen to anyone: look it up for yourself. There are several non-partisan(that means no affiliation) web-sites that specialize in checking the facts. Try one of them. Factcheck.org or snopes.com are 2. They will tell you that McCain has been exagerating any contact Obama ever had with Ayers for his own political gain.It is not true. Hey, if that association was bad, the board that Obama was on with Ayers back in the mid '90's was run by a big time republican whose widow that runs the board is a McCain supporter. So maybe YOU should do the research, OK?

I was in bangor today at the Obama rally most of the time we just stood there with our signs...the black standing next to was told to go back to Africa...he was called n**ger....there was a group of young men that came up and berated a woman that standing ...yelling at her one of them got in her face and started screaming at her...until my husband went over and asked them if they want to talk about McCain with him they said no sir and walked away...the woman was not saying anything just holding her sign which she has a right to do....but these tough young Rublican men couldn't find anyone else they want to talk about the "issues" with..... I was ashamed of them...
