An Unnecessary Ending

The McCain campaign’s descent into nastiness has elicited strong rebukes from the state’s top Republicans. This, unfortunately, has not stopped fliers portraying Barack Obama as a friend of terrorists and lacking judgment from showing up in Maine mailboxes or calls with the same themes from filling answering machines.

Most troubling is that the Maine Republican Party has picked up the dirty work. At least three fliers, with the notation “Paid for and authorized by the Maine Republican Party,” were sent to Maine voters — after the state’s top Republicans, Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, who chair Sen. John McCain’s campaign in Maine, said such negative tactics should end.

The first flier focused on the Illinois senator’s “friend” William Ayers. As has been widely reported, Sen. Obama served on two boards for charitable organizations with Mr. Ayers. The mailing focuses on Mr. Ayers’ involvement with the Weather Underground, a radical group that bombed government buildings, including the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol. It does not mention that Mr. Ayers has not been convicted of any crime, is not on the government’s current list of domestic terrorists and that he was Chicago’s Citizen of the Year in 1997 for his education reform work.

A second mailing portrays Sen. Obama as soft on crime. A third focuses on developer Tony Rezko, who was convicted of fraud. All include the line: “Barack Obama. Not Who You Think He Is.”

The response from the Maine Republican Party is astounding in its belligerence.

“Obama's connection to an unrepentant domestic terrorist like Bill Ayers is raising red flags across Maine and the nation,” Mark Ellis, the party’s chairman, said in a statement. “That's why the Obama campaign and the Democrats are so alarmed, they can't defend this troubling relationship that raises serious questions about Sen. Obama's judgment.”

He should be reminded that it is Republicans who are alarmed by the divisive and negative tone the campaign has sunk to in its final days.

“These kinds of tactics have no place in Maine politics,” Sen. Collins’ spokesman Kevin Kelley said of the automated calls that began as Gov. Sarah Palin was in Bangor earlier this month. “Sen. Collins urges the McCain campaign to stop these calls immediately.”

“These tactics should be suspended immediately,” Sen. Olympia Snowe’s Chief of Staff John Richter said of the calls and the fliers.

Josh Tardy, vice chairman of the campaign, said the Maine GOP printed and mailed the fliers on behalf of the Republican National Committee and that the issues raised are relevant, even if the tactics run counter to what Sens. Collins and Snowe asked.

There are good reasons to question Sen. Obama’s candidacy, such as his limited experience and liberal voting record. Resorting to spurious allegations doesn’t serve Sen. McCain or the Maine Republican Party well.

Oh this is rich. The Bangor Democrat News preaching to republicans about being belligerent. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Though I doubt anybody would ever see even the tiniest amount of criticism directed toward King Obama from the liberal slanted Bangor Democrat News.

"We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism."

- Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev, 1959

Ignore this message at your own peril Liberals. King Obama will wreck this country.

The average voter can tell which campaign has class and common sense and which one is pathetically grasping at straws and wallowing in mud slinging.

Yes, the average voter can tell, which is why Barack Obama has got a significant lead both in Maine and throughout the rest of the country.

Barack Obama can't wreck this country; that task has already been successfully carried out during the 8 years of the Bush administration. Obama is the only candidate with an opportunity to get us back on course though.

“It does not mention that Mr. Ayers has not been convicted of any crime, is not on the government’s current list of domestic terrorists “ BDN 10/29/08

How damn stupid do you think we are? William Ayers himself said, “guilty as charged, and I got away with it scot free. Ain’t this a great country?” He also started in 2001 that “I wish we could have done more.”

This paper is LYING to it’s readers to lead them to think Ayers is anything less than an unrepentant domestic terrorist.

Fellow Republicans.....and we wonder why there has been a Democratic majority in this state for so long??....just read these absurd comments by Mark Ellis and Josh Tardy. Their arrogance is exactly what keeps the GOP from having any success in this state. We can't do anything about Rep. Tardy as he is an elected official...but Mark Ellis can be fired! Somebody do it just to shut him up.

Dear ShawnDaily

YOU ARE A FOOL.

Anyway, it's cool, people are waking up. Your thoughtless out of context blabbing isn't going to pass with smarter, more worldly young folks anymore. The times are a changin' and intelligent educated people can see through your crap. So go on spouting...but no one with a brain cares about you and your perspectives anymore.

YOU ARE THE PAST

By the way Ayers was named Chicago's Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1997 and is a Professor at the University of Chicago.

Probably a slightly more impressive resume than any of the under educated, pro-republican fools commenting on this story.

One more thing

JJacob: In response to your question "How stupid do I think you are?"

Incredibly stupid.

By the way ShawnDaily,

I don't think your quote is to applicable considering that Russia isn't communist anymore.

At least you have some history in your comment. I guess that makes you kinda smart at being really stupid!

"Mud-slinging" is taking place on both sides. Mud-slinging is always used by all parties in every election. Reuters had an article yesterday entitled "Hollywood Insiders Rip MSNBC, Defend Palin." Who are these "Hollywood insiders"? Would you believe they are liberal Democrats who say the Democratic party should "stop the demonizing" and who also say that "Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned" because, as one of the people said of her fellow Democrats, "It diminishes us." There's more, but you can check it out for yourselves. It's all documented and substantiated. Anyways, the bottom line is, "Man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the hearts." He knows the real deal about every single candidate who is running for any type of office--from the presidency on down. Maybe it is time for us to seek His wisdom, knowledge, and understanding about things rather than what He calls the foolish so-called wisdom of the world. When people turn away from the Lord, every man begins to do what he thinks is right in his own eyes. It just causes mass confusion (as evidenced by all the mud-slinging, newspaper articles, editorials, personal perspectives and viewpoints we all seem to have.) Who is the best choice of a leader for this nation? Perhaps it is high time for us to pray and ask God to lead us in that area and to help us make the right choices when we cast our votes next Tuesday.

Russia is most certainly a communist goverment, and Putin is KGB.

Hmmmm...reading these comments, particularly from dustin, I am convinced that it isn't the conservative party that is negative, but the liberals. Facts are facts. If you think the reporting of Obama's associations is negative, then what you really mean is you agree his radical friends is a negative thing. Perhaps just as telling of Obama's character is breaking his campaign finance promise, a promise McCain has kept. And, let's not forget Obama's recent change in idea of what constitutes "wealthy." The latest report from joe Bidens' lips is $150,000. So, hold on to your hats and your pockets books folks, before you know it, the Obama ticket will lower that to $100,000 and so on. The definition of middle class and wealthy keeps changing! We know what that means!

It is so sad that people don't know real facts, only hear-say information from poor news reporting, and uninformed friends. Ayers, bombed the Pentegon and KILLED people. Obama was at a dinner party in Ayers home when he announced his political amibitions. Ayers and his wife when to Canada when the president of North Korea was there. That wonderful friend of Ayers, presented the couple with rings made from the metal of American airplanes that were bombed during the Korean war. Ayers cried at the presentation. Google communism and check the Communism USA website-the communist party is endorsing Obama!!

Barbra,

Ayers did not kill anyone!

If you had an education you would be better at finding good sources.

Saltoria,

why would you keep a campaign finance agreement when it puts you at a disadvantage? Obama only changed his mind after realizing that he could completely re-define campaign finance buy getting $20 at a time from small individual donors on the internet. McCain is only crying because he is incapable of that, and would never be able to raise that amount of money without hitting up special interests, which Obama hasn't done.

The New York Times had an article discussing how the people who benefit least form McCain/Bush policies are the ones who continue to vote for them. It continued on to say that basically they pander to you because you don't understand the world, then once you have oted them into office they screw you over but you are to dumb to realize it. They know all they have to do is spout some false, supposedly patriotic crap and you all jump up and down like the morons you are.

Either way, it doesn't matter.

You are gonna LOOSE

Facts and logic are the sworn enemy of the conservative nuthatch.

Well dustin, I can see that your brilliance is just too much for me. I wish I were half as intelligent as you, then maybe I could understand the world better. Maybe I could understand why spreading the wealth is good for the economy, how it ecourages hard work and businesses to invest. Do you think you could tutor me sometime? How did you get that smart? I sure would like to know as much about the world as you do. I think you are the smartest person on this little forum!

Well...

I'm not the smartest person in the world.

But, I am definitely smarter than you.

Saltoria,

OK I'll take a minute more out of my day,

Obam'as tax cuts benefit more than 95% of American families, everyone who makes less than 250,000 a year saves some money. And if you read about it somewhere legitimate you'll see that this doesn't affect many small businesses either, plus there are additional benefits for small businesses.

So, what you are trying to say then, is that if you made more than 250,000 a year you wouldn't be willing to contribute a little more so those who make less than you can save some? I think that's called sharing. Why do you hate sharing?

Do you really think people aren't going to create businesses or be successful anymore because if they make over 250,000 a year they have to contribute more? That is ridiculous. I could go on and on about how flawed your logic is but I'm not going to waste my time.

Dustin, the fact that you cite the New York Times as a reputable source of facts shows how narrow your thinking is. The New York Times is an extremely left-leaning, biased newspaper, so it doesn’t surprise me that they would print sometime like what you have referred to. You are like most liberals.....you think you’re way smarter than you really are. It always amazes me how liberals/democrats think they are so intelligent and don't hesitate to try to let the world know how smart they are. Go take a few economics courses, and some history classes while you're at it.

When you vote a moron like Bush into office once, you get another chance... After the second time no more chances.

After the fiasco of Bush (not even the most fervent Republicans support him anymore), how could you possibly go for someone who has voted with him 90 percent of the time?

Usually, when I speak or correspond with Republican voters, they say "Bush, Bush, Bush... all you do is talk about Bush..." and then go on to change the subject, usually by bringing up Clinton or Carter.

What this country needs is new blood. Ayers, "terrrorist," "who is Obama really?" and on and on are just diversions. Bad ones.

If you want a better life, vote Obama. If you want more of what you've gotten these past 8 years, you know what to do...

SteveT

Um, actually I think the NYT is considered to be just about the most reputable paper in

the world.

I've taken those classes and many others.

You are clearly a fool.

The New York Times is a newspaper of record, and has been since the 1860s.

Nearly since its conception, it has become a vital resource to historians, the educational world as well as policy makers. I would bet my mother's eyes that daily issues of the NYT have been in the Oval Offices of Dubya, Clinton, Bush Sr., Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon and on and on every day of the year... Just because a fat, pill-addicted former small town radio DJ (Rush L.) or other hatemongers like Glenn Beck SAY they are liberal does not make it so.

El Rushbo himself was on the cover (with a lengthy interview) in the NYT Magazine this summer... If it is so biased, why did Mr. Fatass agree?

What would you say is a "balanced" newspaper, SteveT? The New York Post?'

Just because a paper has big words in it does not make it elitist or liberal.

Historically, the NYT's editorial board is decidedly Democrat, but they have endorsed many Republicans in the past, as well.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/10/23/opinion/20081024-endorse.html

Way to go Dustin, you are smarter than Saltoria or any of those people that keep using all the old world history words ending in 'ist' and 'ism'. Those words have no impact on fixing this economy or the country for that matter. The sad fact remains that there are people who don't like to share anything in life even if they do earn more than someone else. When sharing the wealth is in question there will always be someone greedy and unwilling to give. Business will not go bankrupt over paying more in taxes than the average American who earns less than $200,000 per year and that is the BOTTOM LINE. As for the average American, we all know people out there who are jobless, cannot afford their mortgage, lost their homes or are very close to losing their homes, more Mainers are dying every year in the winter months because they can't pay their oil bills, need for food and assistance growing everyday and I could go on as to why Barack's tax plan makes sense. I guess that is why they say some people are die hard Republicans because no matter what has happened all around them and is going on in the present they insist on voting the party line. I voted for Bush last year because at the time I thought he would help us become less dependent on foreign oil. It is okay to vote opposite than what you have in previous years if it makes sense to do it. Why be so rigid or strictly blue and red all the time?

If you really think that the New York Times is unbiased then I feel very sorry for you. It's not even debatable as to how left-leaning and biased they are. The paper has been a joke for years and if you don't know that then you haven't been paying attention. They have even been caught fabricating stories to push their liberal views.

The real shame of it all is that so many people like markko and dustin see the extreme left as being somewhere near the center. Socialism didn't work in Russia (or anywhere else) and will be the downfall of the US. The biggest historical story of the past century will be the fairlure of socialism. Only Capalism is proven as hugely successful and it is being squashed in this country, little-by-little (and sometimes in not-so-little ways). I had to laugh last week when Colin Powell got on t.v. and gave his explanation of why he is going to vote for Barak Obama. One of his reasons is because the Republican Party has gone too far to the left. Now I have always had a lot of respect for Colin Powell but when he thinks that Obama is closer to the center than McCain then something is very wrong. Obama is ranked as THE most liberal senator, and nobody is more of the living embodiment of centrist than McCain. When we start viewing the likes of Obama as a centrist then God help us all.

Dustin, thank you for sparing us your distorted liberal point of view that you get by reading the new york times....I couldn't agree more with STEVE T!!

The NYT is one of the MOST left wing slanted newspapers in the US. You know not what you do dustin; I forgive you. You have a lot of company here.

Dustin, how much did you give to charity this year, honestly?

glenburngirl: do you have something against feminism? How much did YOU give to charity this year?

I don't have a problem sharing, but I want to be the one to decide who gets my money, not the government. I know you think the government knows who should get my money, but I haven't known the goevernment to ever know how to spend money better than the people.

You want change? Move to Cuba. The people there wanted change (that was Castros message...change) and they sure got it!

One other thing......I don't want to keep arguing with liberals but.....it's very sad when people like Markko and Dustin seem to have more hatred for Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck than they have for Wiliam Ayers. Truely warped thinking.

Actually, I give quite a bit to charity, both time and money.

I forgot that it's impossible to argue logically with people like you guys (Saltoria and SteveT). If you were capable of employing logic you couldn't possibly end up so stupid.

"You want change? Move to Cuba" Wow, Saltoria! Great argument! You really demonstrate your grasp on today's issues in America and abroad!

"If you really think that the New York Times is unbiased then I feel very sorry for you. It's not even debatable as to how left-leaning and biased they are. The paper has been a joke for years and if you don't know that then you haven't been paying attention. They have even been caught fabricating stories to push their liberal views. " Umm, as for this gem of wisdom it only holds in your circle of stupidity!

Like I said before though, you narrow-minded, old (by view point and/or age) are on the way out and people like me will be in charge. So to quote a favorite person of mine "Step aside. It's too late. Here we come"

Well now that you've thoroughly proven your idiocy, I'm calling it a day.

Have fun getting older, fatter, and dumber!!!!

The Maine GOP is just using the same scorched earth tactic the National GOP has used the past eight years: lie, smear, cheat, whatever it takes to win. Tobin is finally getting his after lying to the FBI. Don't present the best argument for their policies, destroy the opponent by whatever means possible. It is perverse, but by now absolutely predictable. Karl Rove taught his minions well.

Regarding the ignorance of the Obama as socialist message, here's what Hendrik Hertzberg has to say about socialist Gov. Sarah Palin:

"For her part, Sarah Palin, who has lately taken to calling Obama “Barack the Wealth Spreader,” seems to be something of a suspect character herself. She is, at the very least, a fellow-traveller of what might be called socialism with an Alaskan face. The state that she governs has no income or sales tax. Instead, it imposes huge levies on the oil companies that lease its oil fields. The proceeds finance the government’s activities and enable it to issue a four-figure annual check to every man, woman, and child in the state. One of the reasons Palin has been a popular governor is that she added an extra twelve hundred dollars to this year’s check, bringing the per-person total to $3,269. A few weeks before she was nominated for Vice-President, she told a visiting journalist—Philip Gourevitch, of this magazine—that “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” Perhaps there is some meaningful distinction between spreading the wealth and sharing it (“collectively,” no less), but finding it would require the analytic skills of Karl the Marxist."

Apparently the Republican leadership thinks its base is so gullible, so uneducated putting two plus two together is too much a chore. Here's Sarah "sharing the wealth," literally. Will the base be able to figure this out for themselves? We'll see.

Oh there's Vichet, I mean Saltoria again trying to get people to say how much they give to charity. Why don't you just tell us, Saltoria, and get it over with?

barbra you really are a joke

Saltoria, then, I will ask you what your Vice President candidate of choice could not: which newspapers and periodicals do you read (READ, not listen to on the radio) regularly?

Saltoria-you are mildly retarded at best.

Yes, Saltoria- I would love to know where you find your information and who informs your dumb and ignorant opinions.

Saltoria.. everyone on this posting dislikes you. And Steve T I feel sorry for anyone who associates with you.

Oh yes- and Shawn Daily. You should get back on your douche broom.

I really don't know how many times I'll have to write this...but I'll do it again....we already have program in place that does EXACTLY! what you all are bitching about...the some called Marxist program was implemented in the 1980's by none other than GOP great Ronald Reagan...yup that's right look it the program is called EARNED INCOME CREDIT! and it redistributes the wealth from the rich to the poor...so all this Marxist and Socialist stuff is a non point..I rather have someone of you Rush lovers... just come out and say I won't vote for Obama because he's Black at least that honest...you can all vote because of fear...I voted to day because of HOPE!! OBAMA---BIDEN 08

Saltoria and Steve T: You are almost as intelligent as this woman.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNZEcdXHvsU

barbra : John McCain is good freinds with convicted felon ,Watergate Plumber and Domestic Terrorist G.Gordon Liddy...he's also good friends with Alaskacan Senator and Newly convicted felon Stevens now don't that make you proud

The Earned Income Credit is not a redistribution of wealth. If you are a single parent you can get a tax credit weekly.....or in other words you get it earlier than if you wait until the end of the year. In the end you still pay the same amount of taxes whether you are on EIC or not. It's intended to help single parents get a little bit more money earlier. So......searoses you are very wrong on your understanding of EIC

I don't care if Obama is black, I just do not like socialism. I'd be happy to vote for a black conservative. My main reason for not voting for him has much more to do with his liberal/socialist leanings than with Bill Ayers, etc. However, it does bother me that he has so many associations with people who really don't like this country very much (Ayers, Reverand Wright, etc.).

It's hilarious to see how you liberals always have to either say how smart you are, or how dumb conservatives are, or both. You never have facts to back up anything so you just dismiss everybody who doesn't agree with you as dumb. I'd really like to know what a liberal believes deeply in, because I just don't understand it, and have never heard any liberal verbalize it.

Hey guys == go back to wonkette , daily kos, DU, etc etc -

1. Bush isn't running

2. McCain is to the left of many dems

3. This isn't about McCain but is about the failure of the BDN editors and the other media to do their job which is to be open, investigate, report the facts. Instead the majority of the media just pulled a Dan Rather.

4. If the media had been doing their job, it would be unnecessary for McCain or the RNC to have to be the one to expose the facts and inconsistancies in the Obama program - I agree he isn't my positive choice - heck even Ron Paul libertarians who hate Bush and McCain are for McCain because of Obama's super liberal stated policies.

5. If the media had been doing their job, you folks would know that Obama supports allowing illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses.

6. If the media had been doing their job, you would know that he's already guaranteed the unions a payoff in denying a secret ballot ! What's next ? You'll have to use your real name in internet postings?

6. If the media had been doing their job, you'd know that just the unions have raised over $100 MILLION for his campaign - I bet many of you critical of McCain complained that Bush is influenced by BIG money.

7. If the media had been doing their job, you'd know that Obama did effectively condone murder of botched abortions - that took a significant research, but the documents are there even tho the Obama leaning authorities attempted to hide.

8. If the media had been doing their job, you'd know there's no way that $200 million came from the people in $5 - $20 - $50 units

9. If the media had been doing their job, you'd know that McCain had a mentor for 20 years who spewed racial hatred. Ooops that was Obama..

etc etc etc . Good luck - I have an incurable disease so I won't be around that long to see all the negative ramifications of having a such a liberal, slick talking, narcissistic president.

I'll have to repeat this point - because sometimes the most seeming innocuous ideas turn out to be the ones that will have the most negative results.

5. If the media had been doing their job, you folks would know that Obama supports allowing illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses.

FrankC, sorry about your incurable disease, but a driver's license is proof that you can drive a car. It shouldn't be used as proof of anything else. Too bad you're so stuck on that.

Well Anne - what document are you going to use to prove you can buy some bubbly to celebrate the election? Or get on an airplane? etc

SteveT WHO said anything about a weekly tax credit! were did you get that bunch of horse poop....and Yes EIC is redistribution of wealth...where do you think the money comes from! and I might know a little bit about paying taxes and want earned EIC is I've been paying income taxes and doing taxs returns for people for about 35 years...

FrankC, er, uh, woo, that's a tough one. Wait a minute, let me see, hmmm......gee, I dunno, I think you may have got me there, darn it. Oh! wait a minute! I've got one right here. Yup there it is. Let me spell it out for you. It's called a P-A-S-S-P-O-R-T. Doofus.

FrankC: Hate to tell you but Maine has had a loophole for years that has allowed illegals to come in from other states and get a drivers license! That loophole has just recently been addressed.

Anne - and for a second i thought there might be some valid discourse but then you folks revert to name calling. I'm sorry, I'm like Joe Biden I can't spell, oops I mean count that three letter word J-O-B-S - and he repeated it !!

and Elmer - then you agree that it's NOT a good thing that Obama supports allowing illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses?

>>why would you keep a campaign finance agreement when it puts you at a disadvantage?

Because Obama said he was for change -- guess not

Keeping his word? Having his word mean anything ? You're attempting to make points using his words,

but then negating them at the same time.

FrankC: You seem to be good at taking words out of context and twisting them like your candidates do. Where the hell did you get that I EVER agreed with you on that point? I believe that there needs to be comprehensive immigration reform and that the U.S. needs to step up and do a better job of closing our borders, like Obama does.

OK you hardcore wingnuts. I'm burnt out and tired of fighting you. Facts are facts. Lies are lies. Arguing about every one of your unfounded and retarded accusations only legitimizes your dumb-ass arguments. So I'm going to throw the ball back in your court, but before I do I want to make one thing -- as your standard-bearing lying thieving rat from another era used to say -- "perfectly clear!" Americans are obviously sick and tired of your bu%#$$t. You've been running the show for a long, long time, and where is America now? Mired down in two unwinnable wars, in debt up to our eyeballs to our enemies, our infrastructure crumbling, our jobs shipped overseas, and our health care system in a shambles. And yes, COMMUNIST China now owns America. Happy? The point is, what on earth are you defending? John McCain, who has supported the policies that got us into this mess? Are you crazy? Out of your minds? More tax cuts for the rich? The vast majority of HARD-WORKING Americans have seen their standard of living decline since W stole the 2000 election. What more do the rich need? Their private jets scream over my house in the summertime when they deign to spend a few weeks in their multimillion-dollar summer cottages. THEY OWN JETS!! But still they want MORE! Go ahead, defend their right for more. Sure, if we all work hard, we can have our own private jets. Anyone who isn't rich must be lazy! The titans pass the costs of their insatiable greed on to shareholders and taxpayers, and the corporate boards approve of everything they do, because they all sit on each other's boards! With a wink and a nod they get to keep it all. Oh yeah!!! They don't have to pay taxes on any of this because their jets, multiple homes, yachts and underpaid "help" are all written off as business expenses. And if you don't like it, you're a commie.

How about an end to corporate welfare? How about an end to subsidizing greed? How about a level playing field? Somebody tell me what on earth is wrong with a living wage for a hard days work? I was brought up to believe this was the American dream. Why do you say this is socialism?

Glenburn,

Powell is voting for Obama because of his choice of VP.....If brains were dynamite Palin wouldn't have enough to blow her nose. Talk about someone that would put the country back 50 years.

Steve T

What do you call the bail outs that just happened. So it's okay to bail out the banks and AIG and the car industry and ITS not okay to help the the american people they could do something with the prescriptions and medical if they wanted to. We better get Obama in as president if we want things to get better.

SteveT; Well I beleive in peace...I beleive that everyone who is born here ,has an opportunity to become the best they can be...I beleive that you shouldn't borrow more that you can pay for ..beit country or person...I believe that no mother should have to worry that her child. is going to be killed in a drive by shooting...I beleive that a woman should beable to get help for she and her children..to leave an abusive man....I believe that no one has the right choose for me in life or about death.. I believe in the right to die with dignity but I don't believe in assisted suicide..I beleive that is alright to fight to help others...I beleive that no one race or religion..any worse of better than the other...because some "Man" said it was.. any religious"extrem" is bad...I beleive that John McCain will do more to hurt this country then help...and I beleive that Barack Obama will inspire this country to be better and do better...and all with the wisper of one word HOPE!

Wow! I will say that after watching his infomercial, if that doesn't inspire hope for this country then nothing will. I know, I know, there will be the critics that want the country to stand divided, not united. It is to be expected.

Dustin is just TOO funny !! Thanks for making me laugh today! God Bless You!

Dustin, see what Saltoria did? He asked you a question, you answered it, then he ridiculed you. My advice is don't answer him anymore!

markko: I listen to MPBN and WVOM for talk radio. I listen to the Today show and to Fox almost equally during the week. I truly listen to NBC and FOX on an equal basis. I want to know what both sides have to say. The unfortunate part of not really knowing ME is not KNOWING that I am truly unbiased in my political views. However, when I read things that folks on this forum write (our friends like anne, dustin and others) that are so BLATANTY untrue, it makes me feel like my trust iNEEDS to be with McCain, the candidate who hasn't broken campaign finance promises, who doesn't hang out and support terrorists. I understand love is blind.....we all love Obama....we'd die for Obama ...

Saltoria: I noticed in this last post that you wrote, " However, when I read things that folks on this forum write (our friends like anne, dustin and others) that are so BLATANTY untrue, it makes me feel like my trust iNEEDS to be with McCain." Please tell us as to what YOU believe is blatantly untrue?

Let me give you some background that you might, or might not, find enlightening. First, what I understand is a concern about the government controlling health care, increasing taxes on those "who can Pay" (and that number keeps changing, it is now at $150,000 according to Biden's own words, that's the scary part). I am a Native American. I lived most of my life on the reservation where the government controlled our health care, housing, jobs and our way of living in general). Our health care is inferior to what the white world gets (whether it is going to the ER, or to your regular dr. or our bc/bs plan). We (on the reservation) have a socialized health care plan that doesn't work in favor of the patient. It works better for the dr. because he/she doesn't have to work as hard or for many hours to please patients (doctors who work for themselves and not the gov. want to make their patients happy so they will come back!). After all, the government assigns patients to the doctors. The doctor doesn't have to pay any special attention to you to try to keep you as a patient...the government does that for the doctor). So, when you hear about the government doing a better job "spreading the wealth" or "free health care" just remember, nothing is free. Obmaba makes it all sound good and free, but don't' be fooled by his smooth talking. We'll all be very sorry, beyond words.

What I meant elmerfudd, was that if you read their posts, you SHOULD notice that what they have to say are opinions and not facts. I'm a not suggesting that the McCain ticket is perfect, but what people on this forum and in the mainstream media report is clearly (even Dan Rather agrees that the left media has gone too far) a left wing bias. A one party system is an ominous (threatening) thing for our country!! With the most LIBERAL, YOUNGEST. AND LEAST EXPERIENCED...one can't help but be concerned!

Saltoria: I am Iroquois, you don't need to give me a lecture as to how health care runs on the reservations. While I have never lived on the reservations, I have cousins that are from the South Dakota Sioux Tribe and I have seen what lack of health care can do! There are many clinics that offer low cost alternative health care for many people. While that may be covered by the taxpayer it is a much need resource for many communities. I, for one, would not mind paying more taxes if it meant that it would assure everyone has access to health coverage. Obama never said that his plan is free, what he said was that it would be more affordable! And, you still avoided my question as to what you believe people have said about McCain that is blatantly untrue!

Saltoria: Many people have given facts and distortions on both sides. It is easy to turn a blind eye when a ticket turns their attention away from the facts and resort to attacking the character of another.

Saltoria: I feel that we share a common bond with Obama. As you know, our people have faced political repression for hundreds of years at the hands of our government. I have spoken before about the imperialistic attitude of many by treating others as lesser creatures and savages. I am almost certain that Obama has experienced the same attitudes. I believe that he brings about the hope that those attitudes will change. And, as a Native American and environmentalist, I am saddend that another would support any candidate that does not respect the earth. Like Chief Seattle wrote: The earth does not belong to us; we belong to the earth. I will not support candidates that wants to: Drill baby drill!

I fully expect to see tomorrow's BDN take the Obama campaign to task for its negative campaign in the interest of fairness. After all, one of Obama's speechwriters, Wendy Button has left the Obama campaign and is now supporting John McCain. Here's what she had to say...

"Ageism and maybe some Socialism have all made their ugly cameos in election 2008. It’s not inspiring. Perhaps this is why I found the initial mocking of Joe so offensive and I realized an old line applied: “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party; the Democratic Party left me.

The party I believed in wouldn’t look down on working people under any circumstance. And Joe the Plumber is right. This is the absolutely worst time to raise taxes on anyone: the rich, the middle class, the poor, small businesses and corporations.

...Not only has this party belittled working people in this campaign from Joe the Plumber to the bitter comments, it has also been part of tearing down two female candidates. At first, certain Democrats and the press called Senator Clinton “dishonest.” They went after her cleavage. They said her experience as First Lady consisted of having tea parties. There was no outrage over “Bros before Hoes” or “Iron My Shirt.”

She goes on to say about Sarah Palin:

"Has she made mistakes? Of course, she’s human too. But the attention paid to her mistakes has been unprecedented compared to Senator Obama’s “57 states” remarks or Senator Biden using a version of the Samuel Johnson quote, “There’s nothing like a hanging in the morning to focus a man’s thoughts.”

...I was dead wrong about the surge and thought it would be a disaster. Senator John McCain led when many of us were ready to quit. Yet we march on as if nothing has changed, wedded to an old plan, and that too is a long way from the Democratic Party."

Queue the crickets of the lamestream media coverage (including the NYT) in 3, 2, 1...

Seasroses, if you are enrolled in the EIC you get a weekly small extra amount in your paycheck. It's actually a reverse-tax. Instead of paying any federal income tax you actually get a small amount added to your pay check WEEKLY. From what I've seen it's a small amount weekly....say around $5.00 or $7.00 per week. For example, If somebody is enrolled in EIC and they get $5.00 per week added to their paycheck, by the end of the year they have received $260.00 of EIC. Then when they file their annual tax return they figure out how much federal income tax they should pay and the EIC amount (which is shown on their form W-2) that they have already received gets included on their tax return. So yes, it is a WEEKLY credit. Maybe you have only dealt with it from the perspective of someone who prepares the annual tax return. I work in an Accounting office and have worked on payroll for many years. I have seen what happens when an employee is in the EIC. It is a WEEKLY small credit that they receive on their WEEKLY paycheck. However, I believe that when they file their annual tax return the total YTD EIC amount is taken into account and, in the end the individual pays the same amount of federal income tax that they would have paid if they had not been enrolled in EIC. The EIC plan is just a gimmick to get single parents a little bit of extra money sooner. Rather than waiting until they file their annual tax return they get the money WEEKLY in small amounts. It is not a redistribution of wealth.

MurphyL, I have no idea why you are directing your anger over the recent bailouts at me. I agree that these bailouts are another step towards socialism. Sounds like we're in agreement on that. If Obama is elected President I hope that EVERYONE will watch and see exactly what he does, and that the critisism will come only when his ideas and policies fail. What I'm trying to say is that if he is elected I plan to give him the benefit of the doubt that he can do things to improve this country, and that he can indeed be an inspiring President. If that happens I will be as happy as anyone. I just don't beleive we will get there with a President who has socialist views. But I plan to let him have his chance to prove that he can help and not make things worse, and I hope that everyone will do that.

Searoses, it sounds like we believe in many of the same things, but you didn't say what your beliefs are in terms of goverrnment policy and how to best realize those beliefs. I believe that a smaller government, with low taxes, and enablement of individuals to realize their dreams and aspirations is the best way to reach many of the things that you listed. It has been proven time and time again throughout history that when people pay lower taxes, and when people and busnesses can operate with little tax and government intervention, that things go much better. I believe strongly in capitalism and private free enterprise, and the laws of supply and demand. When the government sticks it's nose into things, in the form of taxes, fees, tolls, rules, regulations, etc. then it only gets in the way of the beautiful thing that is capitalism and private free enterprise. When taxes are reduced for people and for business then the economy flourishes and the government actually realizes higher gross revenues, and this has been proven many, many times. Back when I was in college I took many economics classes from a professor who was a Liberatarian. He pointed out to us the comparison between the Soviet Union and Japan. Why was the huge country of USSR, with so many natrual resouces, floundering? Why at the same time was the little rocky island of Japan, which was short on natural resources, a world economic superpower? The answer was that the USSR was socialist and that Japan was capitalist. Take another example. The state of Maine keeps getting more and more socialist. Pretty soon we'll have more government employees than we have private sector employees. The state of Maine is in trouble. In comparison, the state of Tennesse has no income tax, you don't have to pay ridiculous amounts of money on excise tax to licence a vehicle, their properaty taxes are perhaps 1/10th of what you pay in Maine, and that state is flourishing with business. Why do people not learn from these kinds of examples? Why do people learch towards more socialism when the answer is less socialism?

Earned Income Credit

A tax credit for low-income workers, even if no income tax was withheld from the worker's pay.

What is the Earned Income Credit Program?

It is a special program for low and moderate-income persons who have been employed in the last tax year. The program is administered by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is a major anti-poverty initiative. It can reduce your federal taxes (possibly to zero). You may qualify for extra cash back from the IRS - a refund of more than you actually paid in taxes. Even if your earnings are so low that you did not pay taxes, you may be able to get a payment

Hate to jump in here where everyone seems so angry, but if the government sends someone a check that comes out of the taxes that other people have paid out of their earnings from working their job, isn't that spreading the wealth around?

Isn't that what MaineCare and Dirigo Health and Social Security and all government programs really are? I'm not saying I'm against them or that they're socialist, and before anybody gets mad at me I give money to Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross and I do tons of volunteer work, and I work two jobs, but I kind of think taxes are all about taking money out of people's paychecks to help pay for programs for a lot of people. I know most of our town taxes have always gone to pay for the local school, even for the 14 years we lived here when we didn't have kids in the school.

SteveTI have one problem with what you say about capitalism...the when let to run unregulated the greed of the capitalistic world will over come the ideals...of the society it serves...and in that the few have more and the masses have less...wages have gone down ...people are expected to work harder and get less pay...and have been co-wosrt in to giving up breaks even giving up time to eat. many are not given hours enough to get umeployment if they lose there jobs ..I want things to be FAIR!.. John McCain scoffs at Obama when he says he wants fairness and said capitalism has no room for fairness...when we build from the bottom up the house will be strong..because of it's good foundation..if you put the roof on with nothing to hold it up then it fails...and that's why the bottom just fell out of all to companies...the roof had to much snow on it the weak foundation couldn't hold it up...Obama's not a socialist he is a visionary that sees the good things in all Americans he believes in a strong America an America that with the work for all us not just for the wealthy few..

realhockeymom; you're right....

I believe that under a TRUE capitalist system the rich would get richer and the poor would get richer. Yes, you will always have some people who are much richer than others, but on the whole I believe that many more people will be much better off.

With all due respect elmer, I have no common bond with Obama. I have seen first hand how more government handouts encourages further repression. The only way for people of any color can be successful is through education. Keeping them dependent on the government isn't a way out of poverty. I can remember the days when we had an Indian Agent. People would go to him whenever they needed more food, clothes etc. I never did see many of those people move on to be self sufficient. Taking from those with more ability and giving to those with less is not the solution to having a viable economy or a reduction in poverty.

Saltoria: sound to me like you're not really listeing to what Obama is saying...he has never said any thing about free health care more affordable..not free...he what's help people be better...give them a chance...

I am listening and I don't like what I am hearing. Neither do a lot of true Americans. Don't be surprised if McCain/Palin pull off a victory. I am more like Joe the plumber than I am like Obama and his elite crowd!!

Saltoria: If you have nothing in common with Obama, then as a Native you have not experienced the bigotry that is ever prevalent in todays society! And, another thing, you just judge the rest of us, because of our political beliefs, as not being "true Americans!" Talk about the irony. But why wouldn't you? I mean that is exactly what you have had been feed by McCain and Palin! You spoke of, "The only way for people of any color can be successful is through education." How the hell do you propose to assure that there is proper funding for educational programs? Do you think that it is just going to appear out of thin air? Or, realistically, is it going to come from the taxpayer? If we are not willing to put more taxes into education then it will not be there. We have already seen how lack of funding affects educational budgets! Everday we hear of programs being cut! If you Saltoria, are more like "Joe the Plumber" then you are a crock of shit that misrepresents oneself! Joe the Plumber asked Obama a question that he knew he could not fulfil at his current salary (nice to dream though) and is NOT a licensed plumber and is BEHIND on his taxes. Oh yeah, that is just what I consider to be a great representation of a reputable American!

Oh, by the way, Saltoria: Once again, you have AVOIDED my question to you so I'm going to ask you AGAIN. Please give us examples of what you believe is BLATANTLY untrue that people have written about McCain?

I don't think you really deserve an answer but I am going to defend myself against your rants. I have most certainly experienced the bigotry just as my daughter has and continues to by way of her residence (reservation) and looks. Many people of non white races have experienced it, but not everyone plays the victim role. I was taught not to allow others to victimize me and that is what I have taught my daughter and will teach my grand daughter. Unfortunately, my daughter has played the "race" card and I don't like it from her anymore than I do anyone else. To me it's a cop out. Enough about race. What I should have said is I have no political bond with Obama and I am not going to vote for someone based on race...white, black, NA or other. Now, do I make myself clear? I won't bother to go back and search or read all the nasty comments and distorted truth since you don't want me to. I come here to be enlightened and to see what both sides are saying, not to be mocked, have my name made fun of, or to be called a fraud (I don't know what you mean by that, or where you are getting that idea but so be it). I don't come here to make online enemies like anne seems to want to do. I'm off to bed. I have to work tomorrow so I can pay my mortgage. So, don't be angry if you ask for a response and I don't get to it right away. I have many other things to do to take care of my family and can't occupy all my time here. Have a good night.

SteveT, you're right on with one exception. There are poor people who indeed are lifted by capitalism; however there are some who, despite all the opportunity present, sit and wait, expecting yet another handout.

It's pretty clear from the comments here that the nastiness has spread into Maine. And in the numerous Obama yard signs that have been reported stolen in Gorham, Scarbourough, Buxton, etc., etc. (four from my yard, on separate occasions). Could such widespread action be coincidental, or was in organized (or at least suggested widely) by the McCain campaign? Shades of the dirty tricks Nixon pulled on Ed Muskie...

Funny how all the white folks signs (both parties) remain and only the Obama signs get stolen. Not something any Republican can be proud of, this. Susan Collins should have resigned the McCain committee when she had the chance, because now she is tainted by all these actions.

An well, nastiness will out and have its 15 minutes of infamy, before the chickens come home to roost next week...

How can you use that phrase without giving Rev. Wright full attribution for it? And what is that, some kind of threat? We're gonna get nastiness if Obama is elected?

At least I can agree with you on that!!

Mervyn, it all depends on where you live. I live in a VERY, predominantly, liberal college town. The only thing you see are Obama signs and the people who put up McCain signs get them stolen, or torn down. It is going both ways, unfortunately there is ignorance in people of all beliefs.
