GRAY, Maine — Two incidents of racism in response to Barack Obama’s election as president are being investigated at a southern Maine high school.
Officials at Gray-New Gloucester High School say the incidents took place Wednesday. A student reportedly stood up in class and made a racist remark about Obama and said he shouldn’t be president.
That led to a conversation later in the hallway between that student and one of the school’s black students.
The black student later walked into the boys’ bathroom and found graffiti on the wall saying the same things about Obama.
The principal is asking the staff to be more aware of what their students are saying and to immediately deal with it.
The student who spoke out about Obama in class has been suspended.

Here we go again...can we say with a loud voice...DOUBLE STANDARD? If this black child would have said something about MCain well now that would of been ok . What a crock....If i was the parents of this child I would hold the principal to task over this. I also find it amusing that BDN didn't have the nuts to report what was said. There will be alot of students being expelled in the up and comming days. I feel sorry for our children...we force them to ENDURE these dens of liberalism they call learning institutes. Forty years ago we spoke to black people with fire hoses....We let them eat with us now...they vote....ride in the front of the bus..We even elect them as leaders of the most powerful country in the free world....As racist and ridiculus as that sounds, These are the facts....But Just for typing or saying these facts.we open ourselves up for racist labels. We as parents walk a very fine line with what we teach our children. The mere mention of another race is grounds for libel these days. Human Progression...This Blog will go ape ( sorry no pun) !

Russ I hear ya... there is a great double standard. It would be nice to know what was said, but I guess they sell more paper by keeping us guessing and creating MORE controversy! & is there true evidence that this other child found the graffiti or could he have possibly done it himself to frame the white child???? I am just stating this as if the race roles were reversed and the AA child were being blamed for something…. It is in my own personal experiences that AA people separate themselves from society more these days then us of other races set them aside. I have many AA friends and they don't go throwing it in my face that they are black and once looked down upon, they hold their heads high and BELIEVE they are just like the rest of us BECAUSE THEY ARE!!

You know racists go in all directions. It's NOT JUST THE WHITES saying things about blacks or any other ethnic group. These other groups are more racists then the whites most of the time. And this includes Obama, his wife and that nut he calls a pastor. What could be more racist then the church he belongs to. Racists coments coming from anyone is mean, and not right, but damn it face up to the fact that Whites are the target of these attacks as much as anyone else. And you can be sure the black child had a few choice racist remarks to the kid who slung them at him. The blacks are still crying about the way their ancestors were treated and Obama wants this country to extend to THEM an apology. Get over it Obama the people here today is not responsible for what happened to your great, great, great, great grandparents. GET OVER IT. I have some very good black friends but all they do is remind people of how bad their ancestors were treated and they call it black history but still live it everyday. What more do they want OUR BLOOD.

It's great to hear such lofty rhetoric from the oppressed white people in one of the whitest states in the U.S. Alexander61754, the student has the right to say whatever he wants but it's against the rules to say it in school. Writing a paper isn't a punishment. We all have a constitutional right to smoke, but a high school student can be suspended for smoking at school. A high school student can also be sent home for wearing skimpy clothing. Hate speech is far more damaging than smoking cigs or wearing short skirts. The school has the right to make rules and enforce them.

A child only learns what his parents have taught him. If the child couldn't come up with any reason Obama shouldn't have been elected other then prejudice then there is not just a problem with that child, there is a problem with his home institution. There is a difference between racist views of whites and blacks, whites are racist because they are taught by prior generations that they are the superior race, blacks are racist because of the things that were done to them in this country, that even if their parents do not teach them about, will learn in History class. None of the things Russ listed should have happened in the first place. How do people not feel the empathy in this situation? Races in this country are still far from equal and anyone who thinks they are needs to go to a ghetto and witness the cycle that separate but equal started, however, thankfully the majority of us believe in equality and are attempting to eliminate racist attitudes one person at a time. There will only be many students being expelled because there are many parents who have taught to judge based on skin color. As for RussHermon, "we" did not treat anyone this way (a bunch of useless, ignorant, mindless racists did) and it was not up to "them" to deny anyone of their civil rights. Remember, the majority of the nation, and the stronger part at that, believed it was wrong and "we" won the Civil War and also the 2008 Presidential Election..

Hate is brought up by many things, the biggest two are JEALOUSLY AND MONEY. take away money 85% of the crime rate and hatred would go down, which in return would stop jealously, which would also stop another 5% of crime. My point is we need to stop hatred in this world before it CONSUMES US ALL, AND IT WILL.

Ignorance reigns supreme with some of the comments made here. I don't know where you've been, Mainelyme, during Bush Jr's reign of terror - but he and Cheney should be charged with treason - as a starter - they took it upon themselves to disregard the Constitution of the United States and deny all Americans our rights to privacy, freedom of speech and a lot of other basic, but very important rights as citizens of a free country - or what was meant to be a free country. You should check facts and history a little once in a while you could actually learn something!
I am appalled at some of the ignorant and racist comments made here - but not surprised. There is still a lot of racist thinking in Maine - mostly because Maine has so few minorities to begin with. But that's changing. We now see more diversity in people than we ever have before in Portland, Lewiston, etc., and that is how it should be. No wonder the kids are saying the things they are - they learn it from parents, like the ones who have commented here - utter ignorant statements, passing on ignorance and hatred to their children - is it any wonder we have so many wars in the world? Yes, Obama is a black man, but he's also a white man - he's bi-racial so he is an excellent representative for the US....he represents the beauty and diversity of all people who live in this land and call it home.
Prior to the election, over and over, I heard the same lies and vicious racist remarks from all people - Christians they claim to be, white Christians of course, and they would continue to send around outright lies about Obama - or call him a towel or rag head - vicious remarks. They refused to look at facts - ignored them, because the facts don't back up their lies and how they want things to be. Come into the 21st century folks - if we don't get our act together and learn to live in peace and respect for one another as "HUMAN" beings, we are all related on this place we call Earth, we will eventually destroy ourselves. We are so close to that happening now, it's not a joke. We need to pull together as people, put aside our petty differences and hatreds that have been taught and learned over years - and start new - to love each other as we want to be loved and respected and treated. We must learn to work together for a better world for the generations to come and please, in the name of all that is holy - teach your children well! Don't pass on your own petty dislikes and hatreds and prejudices to your children! Let that stop with YOU. We all bleed the same, love the same, cry the same tears - laugh the same and die the same. When will humankind understand this. We are no different from one another - we have more in common, than not. The student should have been reprimanded - not because he may have said something about the Obama the President, but because he/she made comments about race - which means color - and comments like that should never be tolerated in any educational environment. Teach Tolerance!

I couldn't have said it better eveningrain. I tend to sit back and listen. On the night that Obama was granted the president elect position, I watched as the world was brought to tears with pride for their fellow human beings finally standing up and choose a person who had the intelagence and heart to be a leader. My 16 year old son came out of his bedroom to see what the results were and stated " Its about time, I was hopeing that everyone would pick the smart one this time." At no point had race even crossed his mind. Racism is dying, I have seen it slowly disipate over the last 30 years and finally become nonexistant in our next generation. The only way it will ever servive is with ignorant, uneducated, all about me comments like those that I have read here and heard from other self proclaimed professionals. For gods sake people let the race thing go and realize that many of us chose that smart guy for once.

A news blog that is somewhat accurate and fair in it's wording. Yes, there may have been racist acts committed. Crimes? Yes and no. If there arn't threats for phsical harm involved, crime? No, Graffiti in the Mens room? Probably. In either case, there may have been a violation of school rules or policy withy regard to hate speech or bullying. I guess the question is whether there would have been some type of disciplinary action had the verbal comments and/or graffiti been directed towards someone white? I would estimate no. Political correctness is in play in the schools. You can decide whether if it fair or not. On the surface it does not sound like it. On the other hand, no insult or intention of minimizing right or wrong, or am I intending to be racisit, but hstorically, we (Whites) have always been a little more "thick skinned" when it comes to racist remarks directed at us. Maybe it is out of control now, however the drama doesn't seem to be carried out so much when it is directed to us as apposed to blacks. Perhaps the "hypersensitivity" is justified, however to establish true equality, there should be equal policy on both sides. I remember back in the Marine Corps., a black drill insrtuctor asked a black recruit (who had the same last name as me) if he was my brother. When the recruit aswered with "Slight color difference, Sir!", why that Drill Instructor went three feet in the air, came down and kicked him to the floor screaming: "All I see is GREEN M*** F***er!" I learned a lot about racisim back them (over 30 years), and that it could be equally applied and equally corrected. Just my thoughts...

That is true, the phrase "separation of church and state" does not actually appear anywhere in the Constitution. There is a problem, however, in that some people draw incorrect conclusions from this fact. The absence of this phrase does not mean that it is an invalid concept or that it cannot be used as a legal or judicial principle.

Hi searoses! From Wikipedia: The separation of church and state is a legal and political principle derived from the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which reads, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . ." The phrase "separation of church and state", which does not appear in the Constitution itself, is generally traced to an 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, where Jefferson spoke of the combined effect of the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. It has since been quoted in several opinions handed down by the United States Supreme Court.

Its sad that the schools only efforts to resolve the issue was to suspend the student. I was suspended from middle school back in the day cuz i wrote a note using the f'word, told a dirty joke, and told my friend (who the note was addressed to) who was being bullied to stick up for herself and smack the girl. Apparently, i was threatening the safety of another student (the bully) and using foul language so suspending me was my punishment. It didn't really teach me anything, as i went right back to writing notes in this manner afterwards. ANyways, my point is, the student who is suspended isnt going to learn a lesson about equality and respect for everyone by suspending him. He should probably pay a visit every day to a psychologist or the guidance counselor and be taught a thing or two about discrimination. Granted, this probably wont do much because he probably learned his behavior from his parents. Just like i learned to cuss, joke and defend myself and friends from my parents.

Mainelyme; You are back in rare form! Well I'll tell you, the lesbians that I do know Do congregate and get together quite often. The ones I know all work and none of them are drunken loudmouths as you implied. As for the cross-dressing thing, thats hardly news when you so proudly posted your glamour shots. I didn't mention that anyway. To each his or her own. I could care less about your personal preferences, it's your nasty remarks that are really uncalled for. You have always given the impression that you were raised better then that!

Well well, the wicked webs we weave, let me tell you all a little something, when your on the battle fields and you look to your right then you look to your left, you really don't care what color that person is, because he is like your brother who is willing to save your life, I've learnt to look at people as all even, no matter what color he or she is, if your a bad person your a bad person, these people come in all shape and colors, so do what I do, picture everybody green and naked, you will learn to walk around in life a much happier person, with a sh1t eating grin on your face, so try treating people like you would like to be treated and see what happens, everybody has choses in life, whether you make the right one or wrong one, it's you that has to live whith your outcome. So Good luck with that, and lastly don't worry be happy, you can't control other peoples choses.

That's the first correct insight that you guessed about me when you were heaping all of your personal imaginary vendettas onto what you guessed to me my personal life.
Obviously, you haven't lived in Bangor too long or you'd know who I am and what my story has been there but, it really doesn't matter to me because I still have very dear friends left in Bangor who, like myself have still managed to escape the Grim Reaper.
Why do you insist on changng your story back and forth that first you "returned" to Bangor" and then to "you first came to Bangor" at a certain time?
I never heard Bangor refuse anyone a good welcome if they came to town treating the natives as equals. But watch out to anyone who shows up thinking they are going to impress the local populace, and land on the top of the heap.
I've known people like that, and they left town in very short order.
I was at the top of the heap in Bangor, and let me tell you it was very hard kowtowing and demeaning work .
If you insist on pushing your know it all attitude on others, then you might just as well go back to where you came from because nobody who is well established in Bangor will ever give you the time of day.
And that goes for the young snots who use these message threads to show just how self important they think they are.
iIt reminds me of a story my next door neighbor Helen Hunt a retired nurse from EMMC told me just before I left town.
A man arrived in a new town and asked a native what kind of people lived there.
The native asked him what kind of people lived in his former town.
The newcomer said, "They were wonderful people. They couldn't do enough to make me feel more accepted and welcomed.
The native replied, "That's the lkind of people you'll meet here."
Soon another newcomer asked the same nativie what kind of people lived in this new to him town, and when asked what kind of people lived in his former town he answered," They were a bunch of nasty two faced hypocrites who couldn't do enough vicious things to destroy people."
The native said,"That's the kind of people you'll find in this town!"
Think about it.
SELF IMPORTANCE STINKS!

Perley, you are absolutely correct, self importance certainly does stink. No story change, I 'returned' to Maine and moved to Bangor 6 years ago.I have no vendettas against you, just the miserable way you talk to people at times. I really care less who's who in Bangor or anywhere else. I have no desire to impress anyone. Certainly don't want to be at the top of anything. As far as my attitude, it's certainly no worse then yours. As far as who you are or what your story is , is of no importance to me. I moved here to be closer to my grown children and grandchildren. That is what is important to me. Certainly not self importance. I don't need for people to 'know' who I am or what I've done. My life has been very satisfactory . I've worked hard and never hurt anyone and loved my children. I Do get a kick from reading these comments. But you have a way with words that hurt people and you know it. Enough of that. I don't feel the self importance line applies to me. How about you?

I think it's very interesting to note that it is considered "okay" to call a white kid "cracka" or "white bread" but completely racist to say anything against other races. I'm half asian and frankly it doesn't matter to me in the slightest what people call me, they are just words, and a wise woman once said that no can make you feel inferior without your consent. I believe in this whole-heartedly and I do not understand why people still give meaning to these terms. I laugh at derogatory names, Ive heard them all, my own mother has had her name mispronounced at work for 20 years! I'm not giving a lecture I just can't stand today's politics playing the race card. You are a person I am a person, just because I don't like your ideals and because I voted McCain does not make me a racist. In fact I think liberals are some of the most racist people I have ever met. Have you ever noticed that there are scholarships for blacks but none for having white skin? What about that is fair? I can't stand "equal opportunity" either, I'm yellow so I get the job even though I'm less qualified? I don't think so, I want the job because I went to school and earned it. This is what is wrong with people today, everybody wants the end result and nobody wants to work for it. frankly it makes me nauseous to think that with the way the economy is going I'm going to be making the same amount of money as a person who sits on their behind stoned. I'm doing the work, I'm working 50 hours a week and going to college so that I can do better than my parents yet I must admit that it is too much hassle and perhaps it might just be easier to lay back and pack a bowl...heck, I'll get my rent paid, darn, if I don't want to earn my way through school then I can just get pregnant! Then the poor sucker of a man who I seduce can pay child support and the state can pay for my education! Way to go America!

Searoses, that's pretty funny. First you state that the phrase "separation of church and state" not appearing in the Constitution is a myth. Then you state that the phrase "separation of church and state" doesn't appear in the Constitution.
Uhhh, I think you made my point. The absence of the phrase does in fact invalidate your position. One just has to be aware of history to see how our founding fathers viewed the 1st Amendment...the numerous invocations to God, the inclusion of a Congressional chaplain, etc.
It's not hard to understand that they were seeking to prevent a national religion based on the model of much of Europe at that time, not eliminate God from inclusion in national policy.
Check out the language...it's very specific..."Congress shall make no law..." It in no way infringes on the ability of states, educational institutions, municipalities, etc. to express themselves in a "religious" manner.
If you feel otherwise, I suggest that you start protesting the indoctrination of students with the religion of secular humanism.
