Here we go again...can we say with a loud voice...DOUBLE STANDARD? If this black child would have said something about MCain well now that would of been ok . What a crock....If i was the parents of this child I would hold the principal to task over this. I also find it amusing that BDN didn't have the nuts to report what was said. There will be alot of students being expelled in the up and comming days. I feel sorry for our children...we force them to ENDURE these dens of liberalism they call learning institutes. I am just stating this as if the race roles were reversed and the AA child were being blamed for something…. It is in my own personal experiences that AA people separate themselves from society more these days then us of other races set them aside. We'll always be at odds in this way because of attitudes like this and the first one. I worked in the military for over 20 years and never had problems after the attitude was removed. And it didn’t matter what race the person was. I found that it doesn’t matter what the race there were some people that I couldn’t trust. I am canadian from what i understand you have the right to speak out, this student should not have been suspended. he should have been corrected and to chose his words wisely. also to be told to wright an eassy on blacks in north america and strides they have made.

It's great to hear such lofty rhetoric from the oppressed white people in one of the whitest states in the U.S. Alexander61754, the student has the right to say whatever he wants but it's against the rules to say it in school. Writing a paper isn't a punishment. We all have a constitutional right to smoke, but a high school student can be suspended for smoking at school. A high school student can also be sent home for wearing skimpy clothing. Hate speech is far more damaging than smoking cigs or wearing short skirts. The school has the right to make rules and enforce them.

A child only learns what his parents have taught him. If the child couldn't come up with any reason Obama shouldn't have been elected other then prejudice then there is not just a problem with that child, there is a problem with his home institution. There is a difference between racist views of whites and blacks, whites are racist because they are taught by prior generations that they are the superior race, blacks are racist because of the things that were done to them in this country, that even if their parents do not teach them about, will learn in History class. None of the things Russ listed should have happened in the first place. How do people not feel the empathy in this situation? Races in this country are still far from equal and anyone who thinks they are needs to go to a ghetto and witness the cycle that separate but equal started, however, thankfully the majority of us believe in equality and are attempting to eliminate racist attitudes one person at a time. There will only be many students being expelled because there are many parents who have taught to judge based on skin color. I go to GNG and i was a part of what happen. Some kid was talking in class named Justin Smith and was sayin Fu** that Ni**er Obama, I don't want a ni**er runnin my country. Me and my friend Zack are both blck students that go there and we went up to Justin Smith and said asked him about it and he didn't deny it he just said I don't want Ni**ers runnin the country. Me and my friend got ready to fight him but the principle came over and stopped it. Later tat day someone wrote on the walls saying fu** that nig*er Obama. I have had to deal with racism since i strted going to the gray schools. I don't know where you've been, Mainelyme, during Bush Jr's reign of terror - but he and Cheney should be charged with treason - as a starter - they took it upon themselves to disregard the Constitution of the United States and deny all Americans our rights to privacy, freedom of speech and a lot of other basic, but very important rights as citizens of a free country - or what was meant to be a free country. You should check facts and history a little once in a while you could actually learn something!

I am appalled at some of the ignorant and racist comments made here - but not surprised. There is still a lot of racist thinking in Maine - mostly because Maine has so few minorities to begin with. But that's changing. We now see more diversity in people than we ever have before in Portland, Lewiston, etc., and that is how it should be. No wonder the kids are saying the things they are - they learn it from parents, like the ones who have commented here - utter ignorant statements, passing on ignorance and hatred to their children - is it any wonder we have so many wars in the world? Prior to the election, over and over, I heard the same lies and vicious racist remarks from all people - Christians they claim to be, white Christians of course, and they would continue to send around outright lies about Obama - or call him a towel or rag head - vicious remarks. They refused to look at facts - ignored them, because the facts don't back up their lies and how they want things to be. Come into the 21st century folks - if we don't get our act together and learn to live in peace and respect for one another as "HUMAN" beings, we are all related on this place we call Earth, we will eventually destroy ourselves. We are so close to that happening now, it's not a joke. We need to pull together as people, put aside our petty differences and hatreds that have been taught and learned over years - and start new - to love each other as we want to be loved and respected and treated. We must learn to work together for a better world for the generations to come and please, in the name of all that is holy - teach your children well! The student should have been reprimanded - not because he may have said something about the Obama the President, but because he/she made comments about race - which means color - and comments like that should never be tolerated in any educational environment. I couldn't have said it better eveningrain. I tend to sit back and listen. I listen to comments, concerns and racist remarks that I would never have imagined certain people say prior to this election. On the night that Obama was granted the president elect position, I watched as the world was brought to tears with pride for their fellow human beings finally standing up and choose a person who had the intelagence and heart to be a leader. My 16 year old son came out of his bedroom to see what the results were and stated " Its about time, I was hopeing that everyone would pick the smart one this time." At no point had race even crossed his mind. Racism is dying, I have seen it slowly disipate over the last 30 years and finally become nonexistant in our next generation. The only way it will ever servive is with ignorant, uneducated, all about me comments like those that I have read here and heard from other self proclaimed professionals. For gods sake people let the race thing go and realize that many of us chose that smart guy for once.

A news blog that is somewhat accurate and fair in it's wording. Yes, there may have been racist acts committed. Crimes? Yes and no. If there arn't threats for phsical harm involved, crime? No, Graffiti in the Mens room? Probably. In either case, there may have been a violation of school rules or policy withy regard to hate speech or bullying. I guess the question is whether there would have been some type of disciplinary action had the verbal comments and/or graffiti been directed towards someone white? I would estimate no. Political correctness is in play in the schools. You can decide whether if it fair or not. On the surface it does not sound like it. On the other hand, no insult or intention of minimizing right or wrong, or am I intending to be racisit, but hstorically, we (Whites) have always been a little more "thick skinned" when it comes to racist remarks directed at us. Maybe it is out of control now, however the drama doesn't seem to be carried out so much when it is directed to us as apposed to blacks. Perhaps the "hypersensitivity" is justified, however to establish true equality, there should be equal policy on both sides. I remember back in the Marine Corps., a black drill insrtuctor asked a black recruit (who had the same last name as me) if he was my brother. When the recruit aswered with "Slight color difference, Sir!", why that Drill Instructor went three feet in the air, came down and kicked him to the floor screaming: "All I see is GREEN M*** F***er!" I learned a lot about racisim back them (over 30 years), and that it could be equally applied and equally corrected. Just my thoughts...

Anyways, its unfortunate that BDN could not report on what the student allegedly said, but if it was interpreted as racist on students AND school administrators behalf than it must be. Its sad that the schools only efforts to resolve the issue was to suspend the student. I was suspended from middle school back in the day cuz i wrote a note using the f'word, told a dirty joke, and told my friend (who the note was addressed to) who was being bullied to stick up for herself and smack the girl. Apparently, i was threatening the safety of another student (the bully) and using foul language so suspending me was my punishment. It didn't really teach me anything, as i went right back to writing notes in this manner afterwards. ANyways, my point is, the student who is suspended isnt going to learn a lesson about equality and respect for everyone by suspending him. He should probably pay a visit every day to a psychologist or the guidance counselor and be taught a thing or two about discrimination. Granted, this probably wont do much because he probably learned his behavior from his parents. Just like i learned to cuss, joke and defend myself and friends from my parents.

No story change, I 'returned' to Maine and moved to Bangor 6 years ago.I have no vendettas against you, just the miserable way you talk to people at times. I think it's very interesting to note that it is considered "okay" to call a white kid "cracka" or "white bread" but completely racist to say anything against other races. I'm half asian and frankly it doesn't matter to me in the slightest what people call me, they are just words, and a wise woman once said that no can make you feel inferior without your consent. Uhhh, I think you made my point. The absence of the phrase does in fact invalidate your position. One just has to be aware of history to see how our founding fathers viewed the 1st Amendment...the numerous invocations to God, the inclusion of a Congressional chaplain, etc.

It's not hard to understand that they were seeking to prevent a national religion based on the model of much of Europe at that time, not eliminate God from inclusion in national policy.

Check out the language...it's very specific..."Congress shall make no law..." It in no way infringes on the ability of states, educational institutions, municipalities, etc. to express themselves in a "religious" manner.

If you feel otherwise, I suggest that you start protesting the indoctrination of students with the religion of secular humanism.
