'Leave It To Beaver' star coming to Bangor, County to raise diabetes awareness

Jerry Mathers

BANGOR, Maine — The star of the former hit TV series “Leave It To Beaver” is coming to Maine this week to promote diabetes awareness in a program sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry to help uninsured and financially strapped patients gain access to prescription medicines.

Jerry Mathers, who has diabetes, will visit Fort Kent, Presque Isle and Houlton on Monday as part of the “Help is Here Express” bus tour.

On Tuesday he will stop at Nicky’s Diner in Bangor from 9 to 11 a.m. and Simones’ Hot Dog Stand in Lewiston from 2 to 4 p.m.

The nationwide program is designed to call attention to the rising rate of chronic disease in the U.S. and the patient assistance programs that can provide free or nearly free drugs to the needy.

Was that him pushing that cart up Route 1?

The guys is 80 pounds over weight....take him to a subway on his trip for god's sake..

Until you have had a child with type 1 diabetes I will not ask/expect you to understand:

But --- that 'slm414' and 'downbeat' can find nothing more to offer that moronic attempts at being clever is a sad commentary on someone trying to help.

May their families never be in a position to understand.

God bless Jerry Mathis.

I always trusted the Beaver when I grew up watching him on TV. Why would he disappoint us now?

It's Mathers. I love Leave it to Beaver. He was so cute and funny. And the parents were so perfect. Don't be mean to Jerry!

Diabetes can hit ANYONE fat and skinny, healthy and not. You may think eatting at subway helps with over weight people but you really need to get a reality check. Search your info before you put your foot in your mouth the next time. Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I'm not perfect and I don't live to be, but before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean. May no one close to you have diabetes cause it is clear that you would never be able to help them if they ever needed you.

Wow. Nonyabuzness. You're nuts. I understand your personnal turmoil, but chill out. I'm pretty sure nobody attacking you.

I will miss seeing Jerry Mathers. The last time he was in Bangor was about 20 some years ago, when he and Tony Dow, who played Wally, appeared at the Bangor State Fair as part of a nostalgia show.

A very nice person, doing wonderful work for a good cause. I wish him all the best
