DEXTER, Maine — A local man was arrested Saturday evening for allegedly stabbing a young boy during a domestic altercation.
Benjamin Perkins II, 30, of Dexter was taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, a Class B crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison, according to Officer Gary Morin at the Dexter Police Department.
The alleged victim, who was identified only as the nephew of Perkins’ girlfriend, suffered a stab wound to the right forearm that was inflicted by some kind of steak knife, Morin said Sunday. The boy was taken to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, but his injuries were not considered serious.
The officer said Perkins has a history of criminal activity and indicated that additional charges could be added pending a review by the District Attorney’s Office.
Perkins is expected to make an initial court appearance today on the charge of aggravated assault.

This is what happens when the DHHS budget gets cut. All of the readers of the BDN who post nasty messages about welfare recipients every time an article mentions DHHS should pay attention - this is the real issue - kids get hurt. Notice they didn't mention the age of the child? He was probably trying to protect his mother from this nut.

NO! This is what happens when welfare enables the less fortunate to continue to be "less", and breed generation after generation of dependent people that never achieve the human dignity that working and earning a living gives them. People that do not have respect for themselves can't possibly teach their children the concept. What kind of self respect does this "girlfriend" have to be involved with this low-life in the first place? This boy is just one of millions of children that will carry into his adult life the values and morals of an environment that fosters nothing positive and serves to dilute the gene pool even more. He will be what he was raised in.
Before a bunch of you liberals jump on my butt and tell me I don't know what I am talking about just listen up. I was raised in a very poor family in Maine with an absentee father, there were five children and my mother raised us pretty much by herself. She was too proud to accept assistance of any kind. She was mortified when a local church delivered a Thanksgiving dinner to us one year. That taught us about pride. She was honest and that taught us honesty. She taught us about accountability when we were punished for doing wrong. She didn't drink and did not ever have a male friend. That taught us self respect.
I made some serious mistakes in my life and because I was taught those values I paid dearly for them emotionally. I did not want to grow old and look back at a life of never having acomplished anything, so I went to college, and got my degree. You can never know what that did for me and my self worth considering where I had come from. Pride, honesty, accountability and morals, all necessary ingredients to build a better life for yourself. You cannot ever do that in a welfare invironment. I raised my daughter with the values I was taught and she too went to college and is now married to a Pediatrician. Her two children both went to college, one has her masters degree the other his bachelors degree. This is how it is supposed to work. Each generation should do better than the one before not get worse. Welfare is the cruelist form of slavery.
Give them "jobs that Americans won't do" and let them grow some pride and self respect; that is what is needed, not a handout.
I hope just one of you out there gets my point.

Toothfairy, if jgordon won't run for Governor, then I nominate you. There is some weird kind of disconnect on this board where things that seem so clear to us native Mainers are just sport for ridicule by some of the other posters. But then again, if we're so smart, how did we let this mess happen? I guess the answer is that, to them, this isn't a mess, it's "Maine, the way life should be!"

You all are jumping to conclusions...there is no mention of DHHS or welfare in the original article.

Toothfairy - I get your point, I just think you're wrong. Are you basically saying that because kids have lousy parents, they deserve to be stabbed? If so, I'm glad your not calling the shots.

you've all got it wrong. you gotta vote thekingofmaine as the governor of this fair state. I myself have had an ancestor a governor, a hall at UMO, and a park in skowhegan (as well as a former president of Skowhegan Savings Bank) should be voted as the next governor of maine.
think about it....
no more damn food stamps, poor people would be forced to work in the most of menial jobs (at the very least) and must earn a GED or higher or then be sent to Pauper's Prison in 7 convenient locations (Bangor, Portland, Waterville, Houlton, Fort Kent, Loring AFB, Western Maine Socialist State of Maine Workers Camp X462-X521) to be trained in a job where they're IQ will be matched. This is not unlike the former NFL star Michael Vick, each person will be given $.12 (cents) an hour and must work 40-60 hours a week for a year until they are rehabilitated. THEN AND ONLY THEN will they be allowed to return to society. Having learned a job, these "worker bees" will be allowed to work the most menial of jobs - janitor, cashier at shaws, and any other job that has wheelchair access and "fake-diseases" will be sent to the chambers.
Mark my word... no sugary sodas neither

I've read bangorian's post four times. Can someone explain to me what the hell he/she is trying to say? I am all about protecting kids, but I don't know what this article and DHHS have in common. Would they have had a bodyguard for the kid?

My response was to Bangorian blaming this crime on DHHS not having enough money or reourses to have made the difference as to why this sort of crime occurred. In NO way did I insinuate that this child deserved to be hurt. you a major left "wingnut" that wants to attack with talons drawn any response to articles in the BDN that is logical or conservative. I just made the point that welfare is not the answer to pulling people out of the gutter.
Money can never buy character just look at Michael Vick. You can take the man out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the man. Same thing with welfare, we pay them not to work and then wonder why they don't!!!!!!
I will bet a lot of money that if you were given the choice to contribute your earning to this system or get it back in your paycheck, you would take the money and run. Your generosity is oh so laudatory when you have no choice but to contribute your fair share because it is taken from you. Just like Barak Husein Obama has an aunt in Boston living on the welfare system and he sure as hell is not paying her rent.
I hope you have to go to the emergency room some time soon and have to wait three hours to be seen because the emergency room is full of illegal aliens that are getting welfare checks plus medical treatment for nothing. What will it ever take to wake this country up?? Obviously common sense has been bred out of too many Americans. Did I not already mention something about the gene pool??
Our freedoms in this country are being squandered and they are not going to be appreciated until we lose them and unfortunately I fear that is going to happen all too soon.

Toothfairy, the victim was the nephew of the perpertrators girlfriend. Based on the article and the facts, unless you know more your idea or references regarding these people are at best guesswork. Based on your rantings one would guess that you would institute a search to find out who you father was or why he was absent.

FYI--Maine has the one of the highest, if not the highest, domestic violence murder rate in the United States! There was an article released a few weeks back in a different paper that gave all the statistics and out of the 26 murders last year...17 or so were related to domestic voilence! Something needs to be done to help these kids. I feel so bad that their voices are going unheard because they are too scared to come forth, and the mothers are too scared to leave because they are threatened to be killed...

but I do c in this situation it was the womans nephew but I think that was also another similar case with the singer from american idol n what happened to her family..its really sick when kids get put in the middle of all this...I have seen it first hand previously being employed at group home for teens..couple kids were removed from violent homes n put into the state. then when no one wants to adopt them or foster them they become product of the state...yet again the cycle will 83% statistically continue..

Although there is absolutely no mention of DHHS in this article, since we are on the subject of assistance.
While I do not believe in handouts, I do believe in TEMPORARY assistance for families going through tough times. Key word there, TEMPORARY. Just enough assistance to help someone get back on their feet. The state has programs designed for this, but they are poorly implemented, and the abuse rate is high.
About 3 years ago I found myself out of work, with a wife and child to feed and one more on the way. I sucked up my pride and applied for assistance . During the 2 months I was out of work and receiving assistance I was required to attend meetings on job searching and money management ( I actually found work on my own as I found the job searching help they offered to be something of a joke).
Anyhow, these meetings were about helping people be self sufficant, yet during the breaks I over heard many of the participants taking in their little circles about how they only wanted to work so many hours a week because they didn't want to lose their assistance.
What the hell, how can they enjoy this kind of life? I recieved assistance for 2 months and felt like the worst kind of person on the planet. How can you have pride in anything you do if you are living off of the state? I still qualified for assistance in the form of foodstamps even after I was hired, I told them to remove me from the program. This kind of abuse has been going on for as long as the programs have existed. Even when i was a teenager i remember certain classmates parents selling their foodstamps for .50c per dollar so they could use the money to play bingo.
I still feel horrible about being in that program, even if only for a couple months. I felt so guilty immediately afterwards that for my first year of work I claimed nothing on my tax returns and paid in, just to return what had been given to me.
How can anybody defend these programs in their current state?

You are all missing the point, read the fourth paragragh, this man has a history of criminal behavior. Why is he not in jail? Granted I don't know what his history is, but If we actually put people in a real jail, not these country clubs that pass as punishment, there would be a lot less repeat offences.

toothfairy, you are 100% right. the assistance program in this state is very broken. welfare does nothing to get people out, it just enables them to stay in welfare. I have read all of your comments and you have nailed it right on the head. I'm glad to know that i'm not the only one who feels this way!

Feed a man fish, you have fed him for the day. Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for life. I love to hear all of us talk about the system. It still amazes me when I think all of us commoners sit around with these great ideas and none of them ever go anywhere. I feel bad for this boy. I do think the looser that stabbed him should be locked up. It even sounds like he should have been locked up to begin with. I am not a person who beleives in the JAIL system. I say an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

as far as welfare i do understand where some are coming from by associating this with welfare. there there trailer parks in dexter, two of which are pretty bad. in both of these trailer parks most of these people don't work, the trailers are dumps, and most of them have 6 kids. chances are the adults were raised in these parks in the same conditions and they are fine wih the way they live, and their kids will do the same. alot of them get into trouble, it's like lets steal and lie instead of working (i know not everybody in these parks are like this, but like 90%) it's like people like this don't think they can do better they were raised by lazy people, they become lazy people and raise lazy kids. I BLAME THE STATE, why would they work, all they have to do is have kids and their handed ebt cards, which are both for food stamps, welfare money, disability (most people on disability in this state claim to have a bad back and walla money!) i know one guy that live in one of these parks, he's only in his 30's, he's got like 7 kids by two different women, he's on disability "because he has a bad back", HE CAN MAKE SEVEN KIDS, HOW BAD IS HIS BACK? he can also pick corn on the side to earn extra money??? they need to stop handing out money to these lazy assed people. i think some people do need assistance, but most abuse it , and it's not fair for the people who bust their butts everyday at crappy jobs to have their hard earned money go to lazy people.

Sounds like an awesome place to live.. (sarcasm). It is truly sad that the little boy has to grow up in such surroundings. Children should only be surrounded with love and people who will take care of them properly.
