We need to put limits on these programs to keep people like this from coming to the state for the welfare, now we will have to take care of his sorry ass in jail for years and this poor irl and her baby! Great work to the Ellsworth Police Dept with the taser gun. Kudos to the cops.......as far as the guy that did this, they need to lock him up for more than the 30 years.....As an Ellsworth resident, knowing the seedy things that take place at the Colonial Motel, they need to shut that place down for good. On a side note, this guy just might walk if his case is heard in the Ellsworth courts, and he will be lucky enough to get Judge Staples as the judge hearing his case. Remembering back to a recent trial in Ellsworth, where Judge Staples basically "slept" during the whole trial, this guy might get lucky, and Staples will miss most all of the testimony in the case....

Power and control are at the root of domestic violence. Until men stand up and take responsibility for their own actions, until men stand up and say that abusing women is not acceptable behavior, until men stand up and say that violence against women will NOT BE TOLERATED, we will continue to have these types of incidents happening. The facts of where these people come from is not the issue. Violence against women is the issue. So for all the men posting on this article, perhaps it is time for you to proclaim that violence against women is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Potential jurors see this stuff, and it will cause problems and appeals down the road, maybe accomplishing what some of these twinkies are advocating against.

I certainly am not implying that all men are abusers. What I am saying is that men need to make it clear to other men that abusing women is not to be tolerated. I agree with mainah_mom that this man is just a boy in his psychological development and I certainly don't think all men are bad nor do I think all men beat their wives. kboot73. Not all woman that have been through domestic violence just "go find another loser and get knocked up again". I, for one, am a prime example of that. I have been through DV and I was pregnant as well and guess what!!! I left him. I left him because my daughter came before him or myself and I didn't want her to grow up thinking that is how men are supposed to treat woman. I have orders against him, he lost his rights and he has nothing to do with her, and I went back to school and got my degree and supported my daughter and myself on my own while I worked a part time job. You know why!? Because I am a strong woman! As are most. Most are just scared to leave due to financial instability, their own insecurities or some other reason. What they need is counseling and a good friend not bashing like you are doing. You obviously have a lot of growing up to do.

Thanks Kelly for reminding us that domestic violence isn't just a "woman's problem," it's everyone's problem. It would be nice if more men spoke out against it.

I especially take offense as I have been there and I am sure that any female who has been there or is there would take offense to your comments. Well you folks may think I am ignorant and stupid, but I have the best of all worlds, I am a stay at home dad of 5 children and my wife works 2 jobs to help support us. While she is working, I am taking care of the children and riding my 4 wheeler int he summer and snow sled in the winter. Live up here is fantastic and great. What a place to live.

She later corrected herself saying not all men are abusers yet didnt give any women any credit I guess you could say towards a domestic violence incident. Her issue was Violence against women, whereas you cannot just profile men as being the abusers. I think she even said the quote herself, its a two way street. Women are 5 to 8 times more likely to be victimized than a man, but the fact that there is a number 5 to 8 states that it happens on both sides...

In case you got the impression that Kelly stated or implied that all men are abusers, she didn't. Go back and re-read her comment. What she said or implied was that men and not just women need to stand up and speak out against domestic violence. Men need to be more vocal about it because there's more of a chance that the abusers will listen to other men. 1. Woman do not always go back to abusers. If we want to get into this...most woman, myself included, learn from their mistake and will NEVER go back to an abuser. That is if the woman is smart and was raised right.

3. Again, you are right to say that abuse is not only by males. Woman can do abusing do; however, most of the time, woman are verbally abusive not physically.

Lets try to get back to the point. This is what happens when we start with the back and forth. The POINT is Domestic Violence is an epidemic. The young man is not only putting his girlfriend in jeopardy but his unborn child. Nobody mentions this. This is double jeopardy. If the mother can't take a breath the unborn is not getting neccacary oxygen to it's brain. It seems to me some of you are more interested in bashing each other than seeing the whole picture. DV is killing our sense of well being ,our sense of self esteem ,our freedom to think for ourselves, it kills and robs it's victims of being safe in our own homes. The person that is supposed to love us is our cap-tore. Some take life mates. Some take hostages.

Stop blaming the victim! Lets give a hand up instead of abusing her further. What would you do if this was your loved one?What if it's you being beaten down. It was me. I am a very grateful survivor of DV. Until you have experienced this for yourself you can not fully understand all it's implications. concerned you are absolutely right! I have been there as well and noone knows what it is like to regain yourself. no one knows how low it can get for a victim of abuse. no one realizes the trials we face on a day to day basis even after we are out of the abusive situation. i still have issues over it but i have moved on and am with a REAL man now. a man who would never hurt me...well, okay he does change my favorite soaps sometimes...jerk..lol. this woman needs help. she needs compassion and understanding. kudos to you as well!

Alot of the hostility is obviously because of some of the negative comments towards women, such as getting knocked up again, what did she do to piss him off, I mean come on. Women don't get knocked up alone, right? Don't men have to have SOME sense of responsibilty in the matter? Sorry kelly, not a man, just wanted to see if I could get an honest answer from kboot. Which I think I did because he must've thought the same thing. kboot, as long as you are helping your wife with daily chores and she doesn't mind going to work and being the breadwinner, then I see nothing wrong with staying home. And I actually commend you for saying it. But please just don't criticize us women when we end up in bad situations. I know alot of women that have been in the same situation as the article and truly have no where to turn, it is sad, especially when there is going to be a child involved. The poor thing is doomed before it ever has a chance. My son was totally planned and the best thing to ever happen to me and I thank god everyday that I don't have to live like some women do.

Sorry listenup, but many times choices are few and far between. How many times have you ever heard on the news about women that made the choice to leave and end up dead by their abuser? I've seen it ALOT. That's the problem with the justice system, someone has to end up dead before the sytem works. A restraining order is only a piece of paper that's not made of armor. Most abusers when threatened with the police or courts only become more dangerous beause they think the control they have is being taken away and get more enraged by it. And as far as tax dollars go, I'd rather give my tax dollars to AMERICANS that need it rather than go overseas to terrorists to attack us again.

All i have done was made one comment about that 20yr old way back and it was in regards to our welfare system and kelly D jump in and made a personal attack against me. if you disagree with someone making a post, just say i disagree with you and make an opinion with an person attack. but when i fired back, now i'm being verbally abusive. My story will start 25 years ago when my best friend in the world was killed by her husband....I don't know how many times she left him and he'd talk her into going back. The next to last time he took their baby and used her as a bargining chip...and she did what she had to ,to get her baby back...He was crazy he would go into rages...and nobody had to do anything....I saw him pick up their little boy and hurl him across the room...we called the cops they did nothing...she ran he'd find her and bring her back...she called spruce run...they said they couldn't help her....we now know that he raped all three of the kids....I don't think she knew that before she died...he shot her in the back as she ran from him...then he turned the gun on himself...what a waste of 2 lives...

As a survivor of dv as a child, and a former child who recieved services from spruce run I ( i lived in thier shelter as a child) I find this all disgusting... there are victims here, the did not deserve the abuse they suffered, as for the comments regarding spruce run the are an amazing organization, they change peoples lives I have never known anyone to be turned away and if you all spent a little more time volunteering maybe the could do more, shame on you..

Well I'll take that directed to me so I'll respond...I'm sorry, calene, mabye I could help if I had more time to volunteer. I go to school 5 days a week taking 6 classes while working full time shifts for the Air National Guard (not counting the times I've been deployed protecting people I don't know like you whom in which proceed to have the courage to say shame on me) and manage to help my mother with her business every weekend saturday and sundays for 8+ hours a day. I also volunteer for as many activities to support the community as I can fit into my schedule. I think I do enough for the community thanks. You say you have never known anyone to be turned away (come back to earth, did you not read searoses story?) You're got to be ignorant to the world if you think every volunteer on the end of that line is doing their volunteer work the right way. If you've ever been in the telecommunications business, you'd probably have a decent understanding of what I am talking about.

Spruce Run operates under the mantle of helping victims of domestic abuse, when in reality, they could not care less about victims who are men. Talk about a bunch of man-haters. I read the posts here and am thinking some people are full of rage and anger.Some times hurt and fear come out that way. There is so much pain and hatred in our society. It makes me so sad. People ask"WHAT DID SHE DO TO PROVOKE THE ATTACK". An abuser doesn't need a reason, doesn't need to be provoked. Doesn't need to be a man. Some people are unable to control their emotions, and this makes them feel in control.

It seems to me that when women are the perpetrators those are isolated incidents, but with six times as many instances of men as the perpetrators it is an epidemic. I think all of you have lost your minds. Just remember that these people are 20. Victims of their own upbringing. I would not call welfare a free ride, nor would I assume it is the pregnant persons job alone to raise the child. Why can't she just have the baby and give it to him to raise, then she can go take on a career without responsibility, better herself, find a better man and have a few kids with the nice guy, and the loser can live on welfare with his kid. The only thing that kboot73 said that a strong woman would actually take offense to was what he didn't flat out say and that was that he is ASSUMING that since the mom has to physically birth the baby, the baby is HER responsibility. This is incorrect. In him assuming this though, and not blatently stating it, he is actually crediting us women. He is saying that we will protect our children no matter what, we will not give them away, and we will go on welfare, IF WE HAVE TO, for awhile, to make sure our kids do not suffer. For the record, if you look closely, the majority of lifelong welfare cases that are sucking this system dry, are men and women who are together but LYING to get extra money.

You all really just need to get along. Emotional, physical, and sexual abuse are problems withing families, and none of these need be tolerated. It is more common for a man to be an abuser, but it is also common for the abused to become abusers (women taking it out on their children for example). The abuse is a form of control. If an abuser feels in control noone has to be afraid. Bottom line.....it is much easier to control a woman then a man. Read a little about abnormal psychology and you will understand why men are the more common of abusers. Personally, I think it's just a stupid testosterone thing. I seriously don't want to pay for this guys life for the next 30 years so I think we should try restorative justice. He can go to meetings at the closest DV program and he can volunteer there. Its unfortunate that someone made the comment about our medicaid system and how they were probably here trying to get on board. I mean really, what does that have to do with him choking her?! Maybe they moved here so he could abuse her more, and get her away from her family. Men, or woman who abuse others need some serious help. The headlines could of read this morning "Pregnant woman found dead in motel from being choked by boyfriend". So luckily the motel manager and the police saved her life. I know from previous first hand experience..being with someone that crazy, its hard to get away...1. Your scared they are going to kill you 2. You dont know how you are going to pay bills (if the abuser is the main bread winner)..and yes some of you will say, well go get a job, or call local abuse hotline number, get a protection order..no one knows what its really like to live a life like that until you have experienced it first hand. You all know recent murders of woman who had protection orders against the abuser and they still came and tracked them down...or like the most recent headline..woman went into home to collect belongings and was assualted by former boyfriend and defended herself....ended up killing the guy, but if she didnt defend herself, would it of been her? This girl needs a lot of counseling...it works! She needs to get parental rights and responsibilites for the sake of her unborn child, and for goodness sakes, dont go back to that psycho.

Well said, Amanada1982. I myself have thought, "get a job and get out," but it isn't that simple and I am thankful to have never been in a similar situation. I hope this young woman gets the help she needs and I don't care if it from Maine or PA. I hope she is already in the hands of domestic abuse counselors and being taken care of. I can't imagine being pregnant and in such a terrible situation. My prayers are with her and her unborn child. It seems that everyone is constantly complaining about the police, but I think they made the right decision here. If it would have been myself, I'd call the old D-A-D as soon as I could and the abuser would have been hung up like a deer on the side of the house by daylight. I hope the court system holds up and give the sad excuse for a human what he deserves.

Does everyone really believe that the only reason that people come to Maine is for the welfare program?? I've lived in several states and believe me, from what I saw, there are many places that have much BETTER programs. Should a list be posted for all the newcomers? Maybe that would help keep the population dpwn.

jimmyb - We are all adults and the choices that we make for ourselves are just that (either forced or not) we choose to change or remain in the same situation. And as for the unborn child in this situation, they are the only ones that can't make the choice for themselves.

domestic violence comes in many forms.Unless a person has been a victim or has witnessed such horror, they have lack in empathy and more power to blame the victim in some way..

I witnessed my sisters horrible life for many years, I was pretty young when it all started so I didn't quite understand for she is a lot older than I. I was a teenager when my nephew was born, she was 23 weeks pregnant, he weighed less than a pound and was in the NICU for 8 months...This was caused at the hands of his father who beat my sister while pregnant. Thank the lord above my nephew is not 16 years old and although behind in mentality he is alive and doing well.

My sister, well she lied for years, no one knew what was happening until I rang her bell one day..They didn't know I was in the door, listening and watching..I witnessed him throw a metal tonka truck at my nephew and hit him in the head, heard the screams, the yells, the name calling and abuse..I did what I had to do..He was not arrested..he was made to leave the home! My family helped her with everything, mved her to a safer place, took care of her needs and hoped she would take the counseling offered to her..She did not..

Several weeks later she took him back, the abuse began again..My mother gained custody of my nephew and has raised him for 9 years!! My sister went on to have another child with this man..ANOTHER CHILD!! The cycle just went on and on until she FINALLY left him! Took her a long time but she did it!

She finally met a wonderful man, re married and took on his 2 children as her own, my mother still having custody of my nephew for he wanted to remain with her,,,She was on a fresh start to a new life! Was doing great, husband a wonderful man!

Well for whatever gof for saken reason.......It has been 6 years...She left her wonderful husband a month ago and went back to the abuse she got away from!!! Now...it has started all aver agin..My mother now fighting to protect another grandson from the abuse..60 year old woman will be raising 2 grandchildren because of ones selfish acts...

I know I am going to take a lot of heat for that comment but so be it..I cannot in my right mind understand how a person can escape abuse and violence, be clear if it for more than 5 years and RETURN TO IT!

I feel so bad for the women even men who don't think enough of themselves to stay away...My sister did not return from fear...It has ben more than 5 yrs..She returned for she is gullable, naive, and far from self suficient..This is self imposed stupidity..Not fear..

My nephews will have a wonderfull life provided by my mother as we did as children...Free from violence and abuse...My sister..Well I love her to death but sometimes there is nothing a person can do to make someone see the light..

with the exception of those who are somehow able to emotionally project their own experiences onto people they've never met before. for you, i just feel bad.

while i agree that this man has really screwed up, and is probably a menace to society, and should be put away for a long time, i am very discouraged by the sickening way all of you people act like you are holier than thou. you can all go to hell for all i care. you're too far gone. it makes me sick.

well, my name is bree, and i am the "woman that will find another loser and get knocked up again". first of all, i think that comments like this are completely pathetic and ignorant and unnecessary. bad enough i had to go through all this, but to come home and find this online with stupid comments like the things that kboot73 in particular decided to say was just more to deal with. for all of your information i did not come to maine to "live off the welfare system". The entire time my fiance and i had been up there, we just wanted to live a normal life like every other mainer. we worked the whole summer, and granted, maybe the hotel we were at was not the nicest, but it was all we could afford. trust me, if i wanted to live off of a system my whole life, i'd have never left new jersey. we had been up there since the beginning of june, and for the most part the experiences with mainers had been very nice, but to see what some of you people have to say really shows exactly how backwoods some of you can be. crawl out from under your rocks, think about what you say before you say it, and learn a damn sense of compassion. i'm the victim in this situation, yet i'm sitting here typing feeling bad for half of you poor slobs. domestic violence is a horrible thing, what i went through was horrible, but my fiance george mitchell is not a horrible man. i do not excuse his behavior, nor do i plan on putting myself and my unborn daughter in those circumstances ever again, but everyone on here is so quick to judge. you don't know me, or my fiance, don't you dare assume anything about either of us.
