NH police say Maine mom served as a drug mule

By The Associated Press

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — New Hampshire state police say a Maine mother of a 1-year-old girl served as a drug mule for a pair of drug traffickers.

Twenty-year-old Alicia Kelley of Westbrook appeared Wednesday in Portsmouth District Court on a felony count of drug possession.

Police say Kelley, the driver and another passenger traveled to Massachusetts to buy the cocaine, and Kelley hid it in a body cavity to avoid arrest when the car was stopped on I-95 for speeding.

Also charged were Kelley’s boyfriend, 22-year-old Bryant Hogan of Portland, who was out on bail at the time of his arrest. The driver, 26-year-old Paul Sans of Scarborough, faces a charge of being as a fugitive from justice in addition to drug charges.

I also would bet that all of these loosers recieve public assistamce. Where was her child? I am glad that the child was not involved. It is sad that a mother would risk her child for a few thrills.

Another child without a mother..How sad..Why can people not think of their children before they get involved in stupidity? It saddens me everytime you see an arcticle like this that there is always an innocent child left behind without their mommy....My children are my first thoughts as I awake and my last thoughts before I fall to sleep...Everything I do in this life is based on what is best for them...I wish others could be the same...

It does not make me sad. It outrages me that these people would put a innocent child in this situation!! It is totally ignorant, if you think otherwise then that is your opinion. It is stupid to be putting your life on the line to smuggle in drugs, it's all about the coin & drugs with these people andthere is no chaning most of them. How many people do you see that get arrested for drugs over and over, not many of them learn. For those that do learn kudos to you, you made a bad choice and turned yoruself around. For those that don't they just do not respect themselves or anyone else. It is all about the next high for them and the upstanding people pay for it one way or another!

I can't wait for all of the critics to start posting their opinions here after getting over the ethnic slurs postings....should prove to be just as ridiculous!

I wonder who volunteered to do the cavity search?

How many speeders get a cavity search? How did they know to look in there? There are some facts missing fro this story.

SteveyDee maybe thats where the missing guns from the Machias Police Department are too !!

Opps!!! Sheriffs Department. My Bad.

I thought I heard an echo the other day. Like talking into a canyon. Them guns have to be in here somewhere.

I see the BDN got the desired response. At least from the first three posters. Tell me exactly why they even felt it was relevant to the story to say she is the mother of a one year old? Did these young men have any children? Or maybe if not the story should mention their mothers..... "TWO MOTHERS HEART BROKEN AS SONS ARESTED FOR DRUGS"? Maybe the should change the name to the Bangor Daily Enquirer. At any rate the fact that she has a child is totaly irrelevant to the crime charged. And body cavity? Why this detail... come on now. Do we really need to know? Howabout for decency sake they report that she hid it on her person?

Well don't read it then.

Tikitorch...Said clearly I felt sad fpr the innocent child...

Maybe they could give the kid to a family that will raise it correctly?

I see your point sickntired. If the baby was in the car, with the drugs hidden on him/her. Then it would be relevent to the story.

A 'DRUG MULE". That has nice ring to it. Why not a donkey? Why not a DRUG DONKEY? We all know it takes a real A$$ to do something as asinine as this. On a serious note though.... Not all drug addicts are bad people. They may be good people who need help. They may be good people who need to get well. For the sake of her child I hope she is able to turn her life around. I see people recover every day. All they need to do is SURENDER to recovery. Life can be so good without the use of drugs (mind altering substances). She too could have a life second to none. Take that first step and realize that 1. you are addicted to drugs and/ or alcohol. That your life has become unmanageable. 2. Come to believe that a power greater than yourself can restore you to sanity.

It has worked for thousands and could work for thousands more if they have the desire ti change.

Let's see... you are in a car with a fugitive from justice, speeding along the highway between MA and ME... who would have thought that they might have made a run to pick up some drugs?!? I'd say this was a good call on the police in NH.

I feel very bad for the child involved. This child does not deserve this and hopefully will be placed with someone that will love her and take very good care of her. Drugs are a bad thing, but this woman and man obviously made their choice and didn't give a damn about the little girl. Hopefully she will be raised by someone that is responsible. Someone brought up the fact that the mother probably gets public assistance. I think that if someone does get public assistance then they should be drug tested. Guess what it would probably solve the enormous amount of welfare the state gives out to people for doing nothing. If you have a job, you can be drug tested from your employer so why not drug test the one's receiving benefits for doing nothing?

I have to agree that there really was no need to mention the child in this story as the child was not involved in the incident; however, with that being said, the child was involved with the 'point' of the story in my opinion. Though the point may be there were people smuggling drugs, the hidden point may be of another person involved in crime not thinking about their children. As for the men having children, or them not being mentioned....if they do have them, I doubt they have any involvement with them. They probably were dead beat dads, or not allowed to see their kids. This was a good call on the part of the police. They have to have reason for a search & seizure, and without a doubt they had it. I also agree that people can turn their lives around and become reformed addicts, but it is rare. This is just another sad case of a child being raised by a drug using/dealing parent. Being drug tested when you are getting benefits such as Mainecare or TANF etc is a good idea, as many people getting those benefits don't need them because they make plenty of $$ selling drugs, or they are too drugged up to work-but it is highly insulting to the poor people who do not use drugs, and if they do test positive, we end up hurting the children even more than they already are. The police depts. are the state too often turn a blind eye to the druggies....I don't think Maine, or anywhere else will ever get a grip on these people.
