SCARBOROUGH, Maine — The Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain is offering severance packages as it seeks to reduce the work force at its corporate headquarters in Scarborough, Maine.
Spokesman Mike Norton says the corporate restructuring will have no impact on more than 27,000 workers at the company’s 167 retail stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. Nor will there be reductions in trucking and distribution divisions.
He says some corporate positions are already being held open as the company reviews operations at its headquarters, where about 750 people are employed.
The company isn’t saying how many jobs will be eliminated altogether. The voluntary resignation program will offer severance based on tenure.

I work part-time and I make probably as much (or nearly as much) money as some full-time employees in this state. I make $250 a week ususally if I get all my hours in (usually I'm late or leave early), I would like to work at a better job but when in maine and they can't open up a #*&%@ing windfarm for people to work at then, I'm sure that i can't

you wanna talk about the economy being bad...for once i have extra money since gas isnt 3.50 a friggin gallon...so how is that bad...people have extra money now...oooo stocks are down...well thats the chance u take in having stocks...i think the shaws deserves to close..they treat there employees like S***. i know from experience...id rather work at the shaws in dover..at least there they dont treat there employees like a number...so good riddance to the waste of space on hogan road...i feel bad for the people at hannaford tho..good store..thats where i shop...so silverado07 im sorry if my comments upset you...its freedom of speech..dont like it go complain to OBAMA maybe he will change it....

I work two jobs (one 40 hours a week, one 8 hours a week) to make ends meet. I have never used any source of government help in my life. I doubt your 18 month gets support just from you. And what's up with the 'dickwee' comment? Stop showing your immaturity...you have a child for God's sake. I am sure the baby's other paren helps...or does that person not work? That's the way it is in Maine. I guess it's ok to bash the employees of a supermarket, but it's not ok to bash you or judge you? It's too bad they treat their employees like s*** but it is HARD to get a job where the employer treats you the way YOU think you should be treated. It doesn't matter whether you're a cow, moose, lezbo, or pile of dog crap. The economy is not good, by friend. So gas has gone down...have you priced a freaking head of lettuce?? Can't get one for under $2. I agree with freedom of speech...but I just find it sad that some of us are rejoicing that a ANOTHER place of business is shutting down. I have a nephew who feels he needs to be paid a certain amount and treated a certain way...if you are not being abused by an employer in some way, just suck it up. I have had jobs where I was in tears just about every day, but I was a single parent and had to work. It got better as years went by. I guess this is all pointless..we can sit here and throw insults at each other...bottom line, it's sad yet another store is closing in Maine. It's a hard place to live. For the record, I voted for McCain.

Wow - there are some really primative comments posted here - swearing and nasty. It's kind of like reading the graffiti on the stall in the grocery rest room. This paper really needs to clean up and filter some of this junk if it's going to retain intelligent readers.

I will apologize if I was out of line in any of my comments. I worked in the medical field and also in the welfare field in the past and it just sems to be the 'norm' that people whine when they feel they are being jilted for whatever reason. Get up and move on. Stop wishing the worst for certain people! It may be temporarily self-satisfying to lash out, but in the end, those people have no idea you are so upset with them nor do they care in most instances..you are just hurting yourselves by holding grudges. Forget them and don't wish ill-will on anyone!
