AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci had a sobering but optimistic message for Maine’s newly elected legislators as he administered the oath of office to them, formally starting the 2009-2010 session.
Baldacci says these are difficult times for Maine and the nation. But the Democratic governor says that in Maine, people come before politics. Baldacci says he’s looking forward to working with both parties to weather these hard economic times.
Baldacci did the State House formalities a day after he and the nation’s other governors met with President-elect Barack Obama in Philadelphia. Baldacci on Wednesday reiterated Obama’s message that government must adopt the best ideas regardless of which side of the political aisle they come from.
While the new Legislature’s officially in business, it won’t start its work in earnest until January.
