BANGOR, Maine — An Eastern Maine Medical Center employee suffered minor injuries Wednesday crossing busy State Street when she was struck by a vehicle driven by another hospital worker.

After she was struck, Geraldine Bernard, 53, of Glenburn was taken to the hospital’s Emergency Department, where she received treatment for a cut on her head before being released, according to Bangor police Sgt. Jim Ken Buckley.

Bernard was crossing State Street about 5:20 p.m. to get from the hospital to the Wing Park parking area on the other side of the street when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Leland Whitting, 66, of Castine, who also works at EMMC, Buckley said.

When the accident occurred, Whitting was making a left turn from the Wing Park lot onto State Street, Buckley said.

Though Whitting had a green light at the time and Bernard had a walk signal, Whitting received a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Buckley said.

Bernard was taken back into the hospital by emergency medical personnel from Old Town, who were at the hospital on business and near the facility’s emergency entrance when the accident occurred, Buckley said.

Isn't that crosswalk also controlled by the push button?

People need to slow down through this section of town. I see people pushing highway speed. Please go the speed limit. They post them for a reason. This might not have been due to speed, but it another example of what could happen.

ydnar723, I think it is. I travel near there frequently. Personally, I don't use any crosswalk pushbuttons because the walk signals are automatically timed with the regular traffic lights. And I think pushbuttons are used to estimate how many pedestrians actually use crosswalks.

I believe that is the case too, I know of many crosswalks there are timed with the lights, but what strikes my curiosity now is if the driver had a green light, making a left hand turn is the signal still on to allow a pedestrian to walk? Not siding with anyone on this I just would imagine if that was the green "yield" light did the crosswalk still give right of way to the pedestrian? For a left hand turn even? Right hand turns I seen it many of times, in many cities, with many signs to stop for the pedestrian in the crosswalk.

I've always thought that the push button was there to give you something to do while you wait for the light to change. Something to make you feel like you're actually moving things along. I wonder if they're actually even hooked up to anything.

Pedestrians should also pay attention too when it is dark, I think both are equally responsible and this was an unfortunate accident. What is the sense of having walk lights on when traffic is turning across the crosswalk. Kind of defeats the purpose... but then this is a typical Bangor way of traffic control with its antiquated traffic signals. This isn't the only intersection set up this way. If it wasn't an EMMC employee no summons would have been issued or even made the newpaper or radio. Must be a slow newsday in Bangor.

There is a jaywalking ordinance in Bangor, why dont the police summons them? Many times I have had to stop quick and almost get rear ended because someone is too lazy to use the crosswalk and just jumps out in traffice like it is their right. Everyday when I maneuver through the craters at the city parking lot across from the Federal Building and walk across Harlow Street, I see people not stopping for pedestrians, why don't the police summons them? I hope that gentleman fights the summons, it was an unfortunate accident. Perhaps this is another case of typical EMMC and City politics in action.

Last time I checked Donald, the pedestrian has the right of way, according to the law. The article also states that the pedestrian had the walk light in their favor - she's not at all at fault. I don't think it has anything to do with politics just human stupidity.

BTW - the lights at that intersection are NEW, not antiquated.

Neither were doing anything wrong both were following the traffic signals directions. This isnt the only intersection that this happens. It was a failure in the system. As far as antiquated traffic light systems, the city public works has talked about updating the traffic lights around the city so that they are computerized and to be timed to be in sync with the others. Right now Bangor is testing this new system on Broadway. New technology to Bangor but old antiquated technology by standards used in other states. Have you ever driven down Main street and some moron steps out in front of you and you almost get rear ended because the moron was too lazy to walk to the crosswalk? Why dont the police summons them, there is also a jaywalking ordinance in Bangor. For everyones safety.
