Well I can say that the gimmick worked. I read the article and may start torturing chickens if it means they will come to my home to protest.

well before the granola crunchers come in and start telling me I'm a sexist pervert, while they sleep I am going to comment on the article and see what dust kicks up, I love kfc no one is going to tell me what to buy and what not to buy and while I'm picking up my bucket of extra crispy I will pull forward and give the girls 10 bucks for a car wash! I usually can spot the tree huggers on the highway with the I brake for animals bumpersticker On the rear of their prius as I pass by in my monstrous SUV gettting 13 miles a gallon and sporting a deer guard on the front startling them so bad they go into the ditch,,,,,oh and I boil my lobstahs tail first so i can hear them scream ;-). these girls dont look like the farm type and I can betcha that peta thinks milk comes from a shelf. go save some whales.

Although I feel many of PETA's past activities have been completely misguided, I do agree with what the ladies here are saying - sort of. Factory farms are bad news. Personally, I don't share their animal love (I don't even like household pets), but these chickens (not to mention cows and pigs) are in such insanely close quarters that the potential for disease spreading rapidly is high. They can and are injected with antibiotics but, either way, this stuff is what we eat and fast food from healthy animals is toxic enough. I admit I'm part of the problem but something needs to be done and it starts with us - the consumers. Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" is good source reading material on this subject.

I don't debate the question of whether or not to eat meat. I like meat as well as anyone else. However, If we are truly stewards of this world, we need to be less driven by greed and profit, and insert some compassion in there. Chickens are placed in battery cages, where they can't even turn around. They are partially de-beaked to prevent them from picking at their neighbor, who is right next to them, and can't move either. They live out their miserable lives this way, never seeing the sun. They are making the ultimate sacrifice for us, giving their lives for our consumption. I am not saying that we should house them at the Hilton, but to not give them a quality existence, before they die is just plain arrogance of the worst kind. "Ask not can they talk, nor if they can reason, but rather, can they suffer"?

Chickens are chickens. Their not a family pet. She mentioned something about cats and dogs. Of course people would be upset if this was happening to people's family pets. But it's not!! Chickens have been raised for meat for years and years and years. I suppose everyone has their own opinion on this. I just don't agree with these women. I love KFC. I love any kind of chicken dish. So what next, give each chicken an acre of land to roam on. I really think people need to get another cause that's a little needier than what KFC dishes up. Yeah, although I do agree with their protesting the inhumane way KFC slaughters their chickens, I think that some of these women use it as an excuse to express their exhibitionist side, like some of the actresses who advertise for PETA in the nude. This is another example of the DIsnification of america. People putting a human face on animals , thinking animals have human emotion and feelings, like bambi and the bad hunter. As we get further from our agarian roots this silliness grows. These two just show how uninformed and unrealistic they are.

I and many of my friends and family worked in Maine's chicken industry before it went south . decoster egg farms , hillcrest processing , the broiler houses.

The average KFC chicken is about 6 months old tops. That way the meat is tender. Ever notice the chicken in the condensed soups is tougher , that is from the egg layers which are about a year old.

Take a chicken and give it a noggy on the back of the head and it has spasms and then passes out for a while , you can then cut off its head without it running around when its time to butcher. Alternatively, you can just hack it off on the block.

In the pocessing plants they are hung up on a conveyor, throats slit quickly with a razor and the blood drains to the blood room. if the drain plugs have to wade in to unplug it. 4-5 feet of blood. Reality.

Then a employee - a cropper takes his two fingers and inserts into the neck and pulls out the windpipe and crop., then feathers removed. etc etc. Little bit more difficult then standing on the wings of a partrige and pulling the legs to expose the breast, very quick and simple. Absolutely nothing wrong with that either its simple reality. People eat meat and insane groups like PETA will never change that.

Point is it is completely natural to kill and process a chicken or any animal for food. ( seagulls were once popular, many shorebirds , like yellow legs also) The act of adding hormones or disease agents to the feed or into a raised crop - remember all animals produce hormones nautrally and we are all made up of chemicals- is an enhancement , enhancements can be for taste , disease protection, texture or economics. People are vaccinated as well.

Economic benefits are not all bad either, keeps food prices down, keeps people working. If people didnt buy it or really demanded a different approach ( those that do dont buy it or go organic if they believe that is different) then changes would be made, but in my opinion that isnt going to happen large scale and two women in bikinis certainly isnt going to sway many if any people that way.

Animals surely look at the world differently than humans ...more auditory and visually than we do ...they have preditors everywhere and as a result most of them hear and see better than we do. But I believe the protestors' point is that the chickens are sentient enough to feel pain, even if they are not aware that their lives could be improved, and that is the wrong the humans are inflicting. For the protestors, I'm guessing here, they do not equate the level of "high intelligence" of a species with the right to be cruel to other living creatures: rather the opposite.

In case you missed the point, these gals are NOT trying to prevent you from eating at KFC. They want KFC to adopt humane slaughter practices. The industrial meat processing plants are vile places. Sure, its nice and tidy to get your chicken out of a bucket or a burger fresh from the drive through window. But do you realize just where that meat is ACTUALLY coming from? The only thing factory farms and processing plants are good for is antibiotic tainted, chemical laced, fecal contaminated, cheap meat.

Cheers to PETA for attempting to bring some public awareness to the unthinkable suffering and killing of chickens against their will. I truly appreciate that PETA even considered coming to Bangor, and that those brave young ladies unselfishly suffered in the cold to bring attention to the atrocities that the meat industry commits against living beings of other species. The billions of dollars of radio, tv and print advertising by restaurant chains and grocery stores is who is truly "telling" us what to eat, not the bold and selfless activists suggesting more compassionate alternatives.

If I don't have to clean it or cook it, I'm happy to eat KFC, Popeye's, whoever's...I've 'cleaned' many a beheaded bird when I lived on a farm in my younger years and couldn't eat chicken for days afterward. My husband's first job was cleaning out the 'blood room' in a poulty plant....and yeah, he still doesn't like the smell of stewing chicken! I like those neat little packages of chicken they sell at Hannaford's. Thankful I don't have to chase the darned bird around the yard with a hatchet in my hand and having to pluck wet, steaming feathers off the carcus before cooking it....There's a lot to be said for modern convienences.

We're all going to die of something and the few hormones, etc. I get from an occasional stop at KFC is not going to add to the dangers of everyday living...besides if I get hit by a drunk driver on the way home from work or freeze from the next power outage, I don't want to have gone without KFC just because PETA said I should feel sorry for some dead chicken...thank you for the opportunity to express my opinion...

I just read some of the comments regarding the KFC protest. No surprise to me, this is Maine. What is particularly distressing is a complete ignorance of what really goes on in factory farms. People bragging about their SUV's, making jokes. I bet none of you would be brave enough to sit down and watch one the movies I show in my Abuse of animals class. There is irrefutable evidence that KFC and other organizations buy their meat from factory farmed, battery caged animals. These are sentient beings, they feel, they have emotions, and they suffer. moosetopia, concerning the mice, snakes and such killed during field harvests, the vast majority of all soy, corn, wheat, oats, etc, grown and harvested in this country goes directly toward feeding and fattening animals who are then chased down and stabbed, shot or beaten to death against their will and chopped up to supply the meat industry. Not to mention the unthinkable amounts of fresh water necessary to raise all those crops as well as the animals they are fed to.

An immense waste of resources, as well as far more harm to other living beings, compared to plant-based diets.

moosetopia, I said that "the vast majority" of crops grown go toward feeding and fattening animals to be killed for the meat industry, not all of them. You better believe that we are just as concerned about the rodents and such who may possibly be killed during mechanical field harvests, this is another reason why we choose vegetarian. Far fewer crops need to be harvested to sustain human beings with plant-based diets as compared to animal farming. Not to mention that the harvest of crops does not always guarantee the death of rodents, it's an unintentional possibility but not an absolute guarantee, as it is when you choose to eat meat. An animal will absolutely always be intentionally chased down and stabbed, shot or beaten to death against his or her will when meat is chosen. Not at all true with the rodents in fields. So you first raise awareness about the intentional violence that we know for a fact will occur, then you go the next step and try to grow as much of your own food as possible that you can harvest by hand and be certain that as little harm as possible is occurring. P.S., I don't like kashi :-)

The aim of PETA's little bikini demonstration was to encourage discussion of the issue of animal rights, and with a comment tally at 122 (including this one) I would say they succeeded very well.

Actually I talk to my legislator 6-8 times a year anyway ... As well as any number of other politicians of various party stripes. Its not that hard to put this topic on my agenda. They never felt threatened by any other topic I have ever brought up to them. In these times of budget crunches and watching the bottom dollar, I feel sure they would welcome any input from any campaign contributing, taxpaying citizen. As for the family cat... You need to work on your sense of humor and recognize when someone has their tongue in their cheek. You take yourself far too seriously and don't take others who also have rights seriously enough. Five PETA members were arrested yesterday and charged with endangering animals, vehicular cow slaughter, and animal pelt tampering. Littering charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. A spokesperson for the group was also charged when she ran over the police chief's Chihuahua on her way to bail out the accused. A riot also broke out in front of the police station when a hotdog vendor approached the group offering dogs at half-off. The hotdog vendor escaped injury, but several catsup bottles were smashed and a mustard container was flattened when stepped on by one of the protesters. No arrests were made. One protester had to be taken to the hospital when he slipped and fell on some broken glass. Paramedics couldn't tell if it was catsup or blood.

On the night of March 18th the group allegedly entered the grounds of the We Love Animals School of Veterinary Studies where they used wire cutters to free livestock being kept on the property for animal study. The animals were then spray painted pink with "No Fur" signs. An attempt was also made to enter the school, but were unsuccessful. Witnesses to the incident said they heard chants of "Free the lab rats!" being yelled by the participants who were trying to enter the building. The group then proceeded to chase the livestock, waving their arms while singing choruses of Born Free. Flyers they had brought to post on the building disappeared when they were left in the vicinity of three goats.

A cow, heading for some clover across the street, was killed when it was hit by Doctor James Top, DVM who was returning to the school to feed the animals. The owner of the livestock, Henry Barnes, was able to round up the remaining animals with a bucket of grain. When asked if he would be pressing charges against Doctor Top, Mr. Barnes stated: "They take care of my animals and I get free medical care for them. What kind of moron do you take me for?"

A female PETA member fainted when Mr. Barnes started up his chain saw and headed towards the dead cow.

The We Love Animals School of Veterinary Studies was established in 1975. At the end of every school years animals used for study are adopted to loving families. After the incident it was decided by school administrators to ban any member of PETA from adopting. The president of the school made this statement: "In light of recent events we have come to the conclusion that PETA is a danger to animals and must, therefore, deny all applications to anyone who is a member."

A fund raising dinner is being held at the PETA headquarters to raise money for legal defense. The cost per plate is fifty dollars. The menu will include a tofu roast with garlic and parsley, fried pinto bean cakes and a meatless taco salad. Copies of The Joy Of Tofu cookbook will also be available for purchase. They have declined an offer from Henry Barnes who tried to donate twenty pounds of cow meat. Their former attorney, Charles Katt, was found dead with an empty bucket of KFC chicken over his head last year. The group claims no knowledge of the incident.

If that infact is Dr. Sydney's real name and you're going to expose it, I think it would only be a fair 'toe to toe" conversation if you also reveal your identity. If not, then it's not a legitimate debate, with only one person's identity revealed and the other hiding behind an alter ego. I think you might have missed the point about watching the movies. The most difficult aspect of watching movies like Witness, is that horrific, unspeakable things were being done to these animals at the hands of human beings. This was happening not to ourselves, but to others. That's what's so hard about it. It's not about us suffering, it's about them suffering. Yes, we can watch videos of ourselves being ripped apart and bleeding to death and having our guts exposed. But most of us in these situations are at the hands of doctors and surgeons who will do whatever they can in their capacity to save our lives. In the end, we leave the hospital and go back to our lives. The animals are not at the hands of doctors and surgeons, they are in the clutches of people who plan to murder them and who most definitely will. They don't get a chance to walk out of the slaughterhouse to go back to their lives. You accused Dr. Sydney of being mentally unstable. I have to tell you, I often wonder who the unstable people really are. The ones that continue to support, defend, legitimize the murder, exploitation and abuse so that they can put a piece of flesh on their plate everyday without feeling guilty, perhaps? Well, Dr. Sydney was right. We'll never change your mind. Maybe some of us are not at a place where we're willing to be concerned about the unimaginable suffering of animals. I noticed there were no responses on abortion. It's strange how some people seem to be more compassionate towards animals then they are towards humans. If we are more compassionate towards humans, we will be also compassionate towards animals and nature as a whole because we realize it is all part of God's creation.

I used to be a hunter. Enjoyed the taste of the meat. I love fly fishing and the taste of wild trout and salmon. I can do it in a responsible way.

I do no agree with placing animals in small quarters. It is not healthy for them and they get stressed and sick. Then they are pumped with chemicals which we also consume and get sick from. It is hard on the environment. It isn't healthy for for them and for us.

Had a son who went to USM. Some strange professors there as there is in many colleges. My daughter went to a university where a professor actually "spoke to the light". That was how he formulated his exams. Changed his mind often.

Frenchy, I know that abortion is a subject for a different forum...it just amazes me that people can be so passionate about animals and not so about human life. For many people living in small communities they would have absolutely nothing if they didn't raise animals for food since a lot of those families not only eat the meat themselves, but they sell it to others, and you know what? I bet they save a lot of money with the cost of groceries these days. Everyone here is entitled to their own opinion. If you're a lifetime PETA member and you don't want to eat meat then good for you, you don't have to. But I totally disagree with the way that these girls went about voicing their opinions. I pray that someday, maybe through science or faith in God we will be a more compassionate world. I hope to see it in my life time or at least I hope my children see it. I think once when we have enough common sense to put money in it's rightful place on our priority list then the world will begin to change. Maybe what's happening to the economy now is the beginning. We've given money too much power. It is the root of many evils when it is in the wrong hands.

The more compassionate world is up to us Eliz, every one of us makes a difference every day. "Be the change you want to see in the world" is a great quote. We don't want the voiceless animals to suffer and die against their will, so my wife and I became vegetarian 15 years ago. At about 90 animals eaten per person per year that equals out to about 2,700 animal lives we have spared over the past 15 years. That is a huge impact by just 2 people, and it's been so easy to do, not to mention that the food we enjoy now is better than ever. We also do not want people to suffer and die needlessly, and of course do not encourage anyone to have an abortion, so in turn we now have a beautiful, precious 8 month old baby boy gracing our lives. He is a doll and my heart breaks just looking at him smile every day. Our concern for the well being of people is also very much impacted by our choosing vegetarian, as 10 times the amount of natural resources are required to produce 1 pound of animal protein compared to 1 pound of plant protein. This robs millions of people throughout the world of much needed nourishment which would otherwise be available if not being cycled through animals. The amount of grain grown for fattening animals in just our country alone could feed the entire world, that's a fact. This doesn't even take into account the vast amount of fresh water that is wasted on animal agriculture, it is beyond belief and as we are now finding out fresh water is rapidly becoming the next scarce resource. So for all those that claim that we care more about animals than people, you are wrong, and we are actually doing plenty to help all species, ours and others. Please join us, do what you can. If you feel like you have to have meat then maybe reduce the number of days that you consume it if possible. If that's the case and you can get out and hunt in the wild, though I don't personally agree with or support it unless an absolute necessity, then at least that would be better than buying meat in a grocery store or restaurant. But if you think that you could give choosing vegetarian or vegan a try then definitely do it. What have you got to lose, nothing, but so much to gain by it. Well said! I still am ambivalent about whether it is right to eat meat or not, but I am crystal clear on how cruelly these animals are raised prior to their demise. It is wrong on every level to subject them to the conditions that they have to suffer in before their death. That's not just chickens either, it's all factory farmed animals. It, like most things in our throw away society, is all about more profit, less waste, and greed. Look at our service providers, such as the phone co., electric co. etc. We get less and less, and our bills go up and up. We have lost many of our values, as we have gone down the technological road. It was what Edison feared the most, and sadly he was right. As far as abortion goes, animals don't have a choice about giving birth, but they will reject babies that have something wrong with them sadly enough. I don't think it is wrong , when it is in the first trimester, and there is a very good reason for it. Naturally, I think it should be not something that is done as birth control, but if you know your child will be deformed, or the pregnancy will endanger the mother, then to me it would be a clear choice. When I see all the over population, shrinking resources, and young bimbos with two or three kids in tow at the welfare line, it does give one food for thought. Rather than abortion in some cases, people should have to apply to have a child, like they do when they want to adopt one. Then at least we wouldn't have so many unwanted children, and children born to people who are ill-equipped to care for themselves, let alone a child. If we are supposedly the most intelligent creatures on this world, it means little if it is not tempered with mercy and compassion. Merry X-mas everyone!
