Unit back from Iraq due in Maine

By The Associated Press

BANGOR, Maine — After nearly a year in Iraq, a medevac unit with the Maine Army National Guard is scheduled to arrive Saturday at Bangor International Airport before continuing on to Fort Carson, Colo., for out-processing.

Capt. Shanon Cotta, a Guard spokesman, says the 130 members of Charlie Company, 126th Aviation Regiment, will spend a couple of hours with family members and well-wishers during their stop.

The company, nicknamed “Black Bears” for Maine’s flagship university, said it flew more than 3,000 hours of rescue missions throughout Iraq and evacuated more than 670 patients.

The unit completes out-processing next week, but the date of its return to Maine has not been released.
