Windham teen killed in snowmobile crash in County

By The Associated Press

TOWNSHIP 13, RANGE 5, Maine — Maine game wardens say a 15-year-old from Windham died from his injuries after crashing his snowmobile into a tree west of the town of Portage.

Lt. Doug Tibbetts says there was freezing rain and poor visibility at the time of the crash late Saturday afternoon. He says wardens reported that freezing rain was accumulating on helmet visors and that riders were having to stop to wipe away the ice.

He says the teen died in the evening after being treated at Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle and transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Tibbetts declined to release the name of the teen, who was part of a group of eight snowmobile riders. He says speed and poor visibility were factors in the crash.

Sad as hell and I'm so sorry for the family.

eight children....any adults???

Mariah Storm, before you jump to conclusions please read the story. The article states 8 "riders" not children. I personally know this family. He was a great kid that comes from a great family.

Where do you get the idea there were eight children? It says a group of eight. What a tragedy for all involved.

Yes, very said indeed. As for the age of the riders, nowhere in the article did it mention eight children - "Tibbetts declined to release the name of the teen, who was part of a group of eight snowmobile riders." Perhaps future incidents could be avoided if snowmobiles followed the same guidelines as automobiles and required riders to be licensed, or at the very least, required to pass a safety course. And was the weather too bad to fly the youth to Bangor instead of driving an ambulance?

A tragic start to the season, hopefully people can learn from this and the past, and educate themselfs on the dangers of 'recreational activites' noone should be endangering themselfs or others, thats why I stoped partisipating in moto-sports, Just ain't fun anaymore, and yes the state is taking licences, and working on tighter laws, sad all the way around

The story reports that there were eight people in the group, we have no idea if they were all kids or not. Either way, it's very tragic and happens far too often.

There should be a minimum age for driving one of these things...18 perhaps? But, look at all the old farts that run into trees with them. Speed is the real problem...young and old alike.

How about it's none of our business if they were any adults .

I'd call for legislation banning the sale and operation of these deathmachines.

Snowmobiles kill more people than bad hunting does and look at the rules stuck to us there. If this was another hunting death, people would be trying to take away our guns again; how about taking away these death sleds from children?

hmmm well i think we should know the 'riders' involved in a death! Sounds like maybe there may not have been any supervision at all? Have you ever been driving down Windhams dark unlit streets and have a snow mobiler suddenly dart out in front of you to cross the street? and usually those behind him following? This is another great hazard...they don't even stop long enough to look both ways, they just dart across. There are etiquettes taught in all sports, why is there no etiquette with snowmobiles??? cars cannot stop on a dime, yet it is the 'drivers' fault if they lose control and hit the snowmobiler. My addition does not equal the the Popular Vote, but then laws were made for the General Public!, this should be applied to the bicyclists as well. Cars were made for long distance driving. If you want to play on your bikes (adults) then believe me, cars have FIRST RIGHTS ON THE ROAD!

Another sad story about a child dying on a snowmobile. This hopefully wakes up parents on not only the power of todays machines, but also the dangers of the rugged and ever changing conditions in Miane.

My condolences go out to the family.....what a shame!
