Vella Gogan is escorted in handcuffs from the Kennebec County Superior Court, Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in Augusta, Maine. Gogan received a six year prison term after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges in the shooting death and dismemberment of her husband.

WATERVILLE, Maine — A 64-year-old woman who served time for shooting her husband and chopping his body into 15 pieces is back in jail on a shoplifting charge.

Vella Gogan of Skowhegan was summoned Sunday for the theft of two pairs of shoes and two water bottles from a sporting goods store in Waterville. She was later jailed without bail for violating probation on her manslaughter conviction.

Gogan was charged with murder in 1999 for allegedly killing her husband in his sleep at their home in Hartland and cutting him into pieces. His dismembered remains were later found near a logging road more than 20 miles from their home.

Gogan maintained that she had been abused by her husband during their 37-year marriage and shot him out of fear that he was going to kill her.

Before her trial began, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to six years in prison. She was released in 2006.

Anyyone hear any more on the woman in Belfast who shot he husband? I was waiting for the BDN to follow up, but then again, how often DO they ever follow up?

Hey this is the states chance to" retry her for murder" yes I know we have double jeopordy in this country but hey why not OJ murdered his wife was found not guilty....and then "stole stuff" of his back and got pretty near life in prison....in a sense he was retried...because people hated the fact he got off with murder....understandably so people were outraged....same thing here lets hang her to dry like OJ make her pay now for an old crime..oh wait we wont do that the person is a she....if she was a he we would be ready to hang the person...lol...

Just remind me that if I kill someone in Maine that I can take a plea deal and get 6 years instead of life. It should be mandatory life sentence unless there was a legitimate factor of abuse or circumstances such as being robbed.

I agree but then the excuses come in I was molested as a child is why i molested I was beaten so i killed not only killed but chopped up his body in 15 sections LMAO....this is the states chance to retry her double jeopardy aside like they did to OJ Simpson..lol

Great idea to retry her on the murder.....as they did OJ. However, Maine doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the rest of the world when it comes to justice! Tell me how shooting someone, chopping them into pieces, then driving the pieces 20 miles away does not qualify as premeditated murder...murder 1??? That is so NOT manslaughter! Wow, I hope I can get her lawyer should I ever need one! Let's see, she'll probably get community service out of this one & have to do volunteer work at a nursing home! Watch out fellas!

I agree with areader....Maine does not keep up with justice around the world...ALTHOUGH I am not a fan of OJ I think he got a raw deal...in this country your tried and convicted once....but look out if u mess up again what they say they cant retry you for they will store in the back of their head and file and first chance they get you will be sentenced for the current crime and some for the past crime that u did not get last time....welcome to America, greatest country in the world...and if your a woman just say he beat ya you'll get off...if your a child molester well say your parents molested you you will get off...or little time...if your a child beater say your a drug addict....if your a thief look out your doing hard time!

Strange sentences here in Maine. Lots of druggies go to jail for 5 years without hurting anyone but murderers and child molesters get less time than that; very strange indeed. I knew an old guy once that went to jail for 5 years for growing some weed in his back yard and he just sat under armed guard for 5 years reading books. All the while child molesters get their little 90 day sentences. There is no rhyme or reason to it at all.

Abused women have the right to murder. that's a fact in Maine - it is ALWAYS reduced to manslaughter - which, by definition is an act resulting in death that was unplanned by the perpetrator!!! Now put her in jail for 30 years for shop lifting to balance the scales of justice. She should be made to pay like old OJ did - on the second time around for an insignificant charge. Hang her.

Scollins, there is an upside to the OJ story. Now OJ and Scott Peterson can put their collective minds together and fins the real killers.

There ya go ladies..... kill the old man and chop him up. You can do 6 years standing on your head. You will be out in 4 with good behavior and less than that if you find Jesus while you are in. Way less hassle than a divorce.
