Maine man faces OUI charge atop Zamboni

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man faces a drunken driving charge after police found him aboard an idling Zamboni inside the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Police and firefighters were alerted by an alarm at 2 a.m. Tuesday that somebody was inside the arena, which is home to the Portland Pirates hockey team.

Police officers discovered 25-year-old Adam Patterson on top of the Zamboni and arrested him before he could drive it out of a storage area.

Police say Patterson appeared to be intoxicated. He faces charges of operating under the influence, among other things. Civic Center General Manager Steve Crane said somebody also had driven one of the center’s forklifts and hit a sprinkler line.

If he is NOT on a public way (road) how can he be charged with OUI? He was inside a building not on a road!

Trespassing and B&E, prob Diorderly but no way OUI.

no wonder some people dont use any commonsense ,the law enforcemnt dont ,this is so lame its sad

What part of operating under the influence do some of you people not understand. Zamboni's, lawn tractors, snowmobiles, ATV or sports cars it doesn't matter just as long as it has an engine and the ability to move. You people are a bunch of rocket scientists aren't you.

I ahve to agree this guy being found on an idling Zamboni and arrested for OUI is a laugh. Come on charge him with B&E and any damage but OUI. Next thing the police will want to charge a person for sitting in the moterized chair for OUI.

PS "have"

'Sayswho' ---reread 'olmainer' : obviously we are not of your intellectual ilk - and please be patient with us while we attempt to interject an tiny bit of common sense;

Is this why Maine has the highest number of law enforcement 'people' per capita in the U.S.--.

Nobody wants drunks on highways--but to ruin someone - just because you can.

Is this what we want from each other.? !

My husband is a cop and I hope he would have more common sense as to the charges.... There are probably a dozen other charges that would fit much better than OUI...

Sounds like the police have nothing better to do oui on a zamboni please stop being so rediculous.Lets get the oui of the streets not the ice i hope the da isnt as foolish as the police

rogerw, The emergency personnel were alerted because of an alarm. When they arrived it appeared to be B&E.

Joke , what a joke.

pcme2000:If he is drunk and operating a power chair, yes he can be charged. oui is oui.

Won't stick......

Thumpers will have a field day here. Be real charge him with distruction of property. Lets use some common sense.

Leave your steveypee alone Stevey !!!!!

Who on earth names their kid Stevey anyway? This should be a crime also !

§2411. Criminal OUI

A. Operates a motor vehicle:

(2) While having a blood-alcohol level of 0.08% or more; [2003, c. 452, Pt. Q, §78 (NEW); 2003, c. 452, Pt. X, §2 (AFF).]

4. Arrest. [ 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF) .]

One more..................

42. Motor vehicle. "Motor vehicle" means a self-propelled vehicle not operated exclusively on tracks but does not include:

Let's go play on the ice....whatever the cost........what an idiot!

Only a bunch of dorks are going to think it will stick. tju12008 , I got your Stevey hanging thumper.

But he was idle. Give the poor drunk a chance. Probably just passed out forgetting his purpose there.

HERE IS OUR HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS AT WORK. FIRED? YES. OUI? ARE YOU KDDING ME? EL BUNCHO DE STUPIDO.

GO TO GOLF COURSES THEN

public intoxication, criminal trespass, breaking and entering.....If some one was on your property drunk messing with your stuff,I think you wouldnt treat it like a joke.

We have way too many Cops and too few people to bust. Maine is turning into a police state.

Yeh you can go golfing and ride around in a golf cart while tipping back a cold one. Cops wont bother you there.

Shhhh don't tell the cops, I get tanked and drive my sons Power Wheels around our garage....

my ex got put in jail for the day once for riding his bicycle on the road while drunk...lmaoooooooo..

your right Steveydee: Just don't break into the Proshop to get the keys to the golf cart.

Woman has alcohol in her system while driveing on the highway, hit a guy and was pronounced deceased who had also been drinking and walking in the middle of the road and she doesnt get charged with anything. A guy who was intoxicated and driveing a Zamboni in the civic center and they are going to charge him with OUI. What the hell is wrong with this state. Do we have a bunch of Idiots makeing these decisions? Are they drawing the outcome of cases out of a hat, are these situations a game to them? What are they thinking? I'm totally discusted with the judicial sysyem, very very corrupt.

kevin77 that was great...I almost peed myself. Seriously the law is meant to protect people on our roads; He was in a building. This will be settled on with a lesser charge but still the cops had to because you ticket high and settle low. He was drunk on a motorized vehicle but will be found quilty of two/three other charges. My cousin was ticketed for OUI in a kayak....yes a kayak.

Ill tell you what: If I ever and I mean ever find myself drunk in a building with a Zomboni, Im taking it for a spin on the ice. Well maybe not but I will sit on it and pretend to.

I know snowmobilers can be charged with OUI and they usually operate off road.

As can kayakers but this guy is in a building. What are so rules for being dumb in a building?

I have seen on worlds stupidest criminals that a man got a OUI while riding on a horse. I know somebody has had to see that one. That bothered me. No motor and he still got an OUI. I dont think the horse would run himself into a brick wall or go of the trial or road. The laws for OUI's are very strick, but stupid in some ways

C'mon, think of all the pedestrians and other zamboni's that were in danger...fry him! :)

Matt29. Snowmobiles and atvs are licensed vehicles, and frequently cross roads.

Just makes me thankful I am not one of those people who enjoy a few drinks and then decide to go for a drive....On an ice rink! Foolish, but it is a motorized vehicle, capable of the breakneck speeds of 5-8 MPH!

I needed a laugh. Thanks.

You can be passed out in your vehicle and if your keys are in the ignition (even if the vehicle isn't running), there you go. You can get charged with an OUI.

Thats why you take the keys out and put them outside the car somewhere.

Lawyers do not Prosecute any longer.....no money in that... They Settle the Cases outside of court. It has become a 'money' run court system.

If you hire a lawyer to defend you against an oui, you need to pay the $$1500.00 up front. The lawyer drags your case out for a year assuring you that he will 'win' due to all evidence. You Trust Him.... when the end of the year gets near, his 'assurance' lessons and he begins to tell you that things have changed and that the DA wants a higher stake. So, instead of the people going forth with the trial they 'settle', and walk away with 1500.00 less in their pockets and still did Not clear their record, in fine print, it will say state has right to stop you at any time thereafter. Lawyer forgot??? to tell you that part? Lawyers do not want to go to trial, it's too much like work! Their biggest threat they use, is the judge doesn't want to hear so many cases.

He has 200 to hear today! Scam all the way!

It is called leverage. When the idiot goes to make a plea, most likely, the prosecutor will have more to work with. You charge some one with as many violations as possible. GET IT.
