Nova Scotia man injured in I-95 crash

CARMEL, Maine — A Nova Scotia man escaped serious injury Tuesday morning when he lost control of his car on the slippery northbound lane of Interstate 95 and wound up upside down in the highway median.

Daniel Fraser, 67, was headed north in his Cadillac sedan shortly after 9 a.m. when he approached wintry conditions near mile marker 170, Maine State Police Trooper Brenda Coolen said.

“He was simply driving too fast for the conditions,” she said.

Fraser was in the passing lane when he began to fishtail, witnesses told Coolen, and he couldn’t stop the car from veering off the road and flipping over into the median.

When police and fire crews arrived, Fraser was trapped inside his vehicle. After several minutes, rescue personnel extricated the man, Coolen said. He was then taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

“He had a cut on his head and some broken bones, I think,” the trooper said. “They were going to keep him there for a couple days just to be safe.”

Police shut down the passing lane of I-95 northbound for about an hour while they cleared the scene.

So how fast was he driving? I'm also curious to if he had the cruise control on. Someone managed to lose control and end up off the road this morning right before the Hogan road exit while traveling Northbound. How they did it I have no clue.

BTW, why did they have the 45mph signs flashing at 11:30 AM when the road was nothing but wet? Even the shoulders had been cleared of snow at this time but yet the signs where flashing saying max speed is 45mph which could have ruined your day if you where doing that speed as traffic was moving well above that limit.

Those 45 MPH signs were flashing because the wetness on the road can turn into a sheet of ice even when it is above freezing. How you ask? Cold pockets of air below 32 degrees F often form in the shallow valleys even when the temperature at higher elevations is well above freezing.

Hmmmm...an accident at 7:45 a.m. and this one both involved Cadillacs. Good to know that they don't handle well in the snow.

Any poor fool should know how to drive in Maine, especially if they are from the cold country. Another thing one doe not run in cruise control if road is at all icy, that is worse hassard. If a person is usung 4 wheel drive, you should never go faster than 50mph, my manual says that , and I have had 5 or 6 4x4 s in 35 years.

'avidreader', most Cadillacs, like some other higher-priced GM cars and SUV's have a traction-control. On mine, you had to open the darned glove compartment and push a white button to employ it. I had one on my de Ville and it works okay...in rainy weather, but not on ice or snow too well. Maybe they did have their trac-control on along with the speed control. Going through city propers where there are vehicles entering and exiting ramps would be foolish to employ these controls on your vehicle. Matt29, momydearest, and Kevin all have excellent comments.

A close examination of accidents on I95 would reveal a disproportionate number occurring in the Plymouth to Hampden area. The slight increase in elevation frequently results in the road freezing over and creating a "black ice." Back in the infamous 1998, I drove that stretch everyday through the Winter and it was a white knuckle experience every time. The numbers of cars that spun-out and crashed or ended up in the medium were frightful. This is a seriously bad section of Interstate that should be salted and sanded whenever temperatures are near freezing. Driver beware!

Canadian driving too fast for road conditions...not surprised. Anyone sees how half the Canadians drive in this state should not be surprised either. They are like many drivers in this state, don't know Yield, Stop, Red Light, etc. Pardon me while I find my tiny Violin.

These idiots come over here and think they own the roads and god forbid you get in their way either on the road or in a store.

They are the most arrogant breed on earth.

A canadian truck will force you off Rt. 9 and not give you and inch

And if you are doing the speed limit will run right up your back-side

Well when they do that> It`s time ot slow down when you are coming to a hill and then speed up over the to so he has to crawl up the hill

the borders should be closed

C'mon kylie. Talk about generalization.

It seems that some canadain drivers have a problem converting kelometers per hour to miles per hour. 100kpm does't mean 100mph.

Canadians are just like massachusetts drivers and get their license from sears

It would be great is they would all take a ferry right into Boston Harbor

canadians should pay more attention and respect our driving laws and maybe they wouldnt end up upside down in traffic with broken bones......my lil violin is going crazy also.

It is really too bad there is one person trying to single-handedly ruin these blogs. He is posting under the following usernames and is best to be ignored: mainelyme2, parkstreet_demon, concerned1, anonymous_ahole, richard37, shakyjake0206, scollins342, scollins372, collins372, momydearest, lawandorder, amhi4me, thekingofmaine, dreamland51, kboot73, mooseME, papke1, tju12008, leumas.

Thanks Ann. Good to know.

BDN should put a little more responsibility on the user, and not allow people to have multiple accounts. Can't write an editiorial without your name attached.

Come on anne_of_mdi, you don't think the News web page has many many readers, and many to post their comments..get with the program..Larry T. Doughty, South Brewer

Larryt39, I'm sorry, but I really can't understand what you just wrote. Would you care to elaborate?

Anne, perhaps I am reading something into your comments about one person doing all of the blogging here...is that what you were implying? Larry T. Doughty

Yes, I'm saying that whenever you see a totally idiotic, inflammatory remark being made by a poster you have never heard of before, it's the same guy. So far he's using these names: mainelyme2, parkstreet_demon, concerned1, anonymous_ahole, richard37, shakyjake0206, scollins342, scollins372, collins372, momydearest, lawandorder, amhi4me, thekingofmaine, dreamland51, kboot73, mooseME, papke1, tju12008, leumas; and today it seems that ladyslipper can be added to the list. So if it seems like someone is being a moron intentionally and not innocently, google their username with "bangor daily news," and if they have only been posting here for one or two days it's him, and you need not respond to his stupid posts.

Anne, I think you are not always correct with your assesment on faux names.... A few months ago I took a hiatus from posting though i did check in from time to time... i recall in one post from that you accused someone else of being me...vichet. I didnt loose any sleep over it but i can guarantee that other than when I re-registered when they updated the system, I have never been anyone else.

Vichet, no one can always be correct, but my track record's pretty good. As a dear friend of mine is fond of saying, My mama didn't raise no fool.
