Members of Maine credit unions warned of e-mail ‘phishing’ scam

Members of Maine’s credit unions should use caution if they spy an official-looking e-mail in their inbox that directs them to reactivate their ATM cards and personal identification numbers.

The e-mail is a scam, said Jon Paradise of the Maine Credit Union League.

“It looks very real,” he said. “It’s very scary. The older population tends to be more vulnerable to these types of scams. Anything official to your home e-mail address is bound to raise a few eyebrows.”

Paradise said that credit unions would never contact their members by e-mail asking for private account information.

“Credit unions and financial institutions in general are pretty vigilant,” he said.

Paradise’s advice to those who have received the fake e-mail is to report it to their credit unions — which then most likely will report it to the National Credit Union Administration — and then to delete it.

While he did not know of any complaints about this particular scam, he said that there are consumers who fall for such official-seeming communications and share their private account numbers with unscrupulous individuals.

“There’s somebody out there, and all they do is create these fraudulent e-mails and ‘phish’ for information,” Paradise said. “Unfortunately, there are consumers that fall for it. Fortunately, I think a lot of people have been educated about it.”

I'd start looking at the computers at UMO. These scams almost always involve bored college kids.
