Fire in Hancock destroys home

HANCOCK, Maine — An early morning fire destroyed a home on Coffin Road on Sunday.

According to Hancock Fire Chief Chris Holmes, the initial call came in at about 4:22 a.m. Sunday reporting a structure fire at the home of Bob LaForge on Coffin Road.

“It was a fully engulfed when we got there,” Holmes said. “There was no saving it.”

There were propane tanks on the property and there were several small explosions as crews were setting up, he said.

No one was in the building when the fire started, Holmes said. The owner and his wife were in Florida where they spend the winter.

Setting up the water supply was initially a problem for the firefighters, according to the chief. Coffin Road is long and narrow, so they could not set up their normal water relay and had to run lines in from Franklin Road (Route 182).

No one was injured in the fire.

It appears that the fire started in the kitchen area, although the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. The owners had left a propane heater on low, Holmes said, and that was the only thing running in the home. An inspector from the State Fire Marshal’s Office is scheduled to inspect the remains of the home on Monday in an effort to determine the cause.

Crews from the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department were joined at the scene by firefighters from Sorrento, Sullivan, Franklin and Eastbrook; crews from Lamoine and Ellsworth stood by.
