PITTSFIELD, Maine — When The Welcome Table needed a logo, organizer Trudy Ferland spread the word and a teacher in Waterville embraced the challenge.

Mid-Maine Technical Center graphics instructor Susan Strasburg assigned the logo as a class project.

The winning design, an abstract table with three visitors, was designed by Samira Rizza, a 17-year-old from Fairfield.

Strasburg said she had all the students participate.

“The students had the experience of working on a real-life design and Samira has a nice piece for her professional portfolio.

“Beyond the skills we teach we also provide a professional atmosphere,” Strasburg said.

Rizza said: “I thought about the name, The Welcome Table, and I knew making a sort of table would be ideal and putting little people around it just made sense to me. I was really happy when I found out my design won. There are a lot of talented kids in my class and probably a lot of other talented people participating so I wasn't expecting it at all.”

Carolyn Cianchette, a member of TWT’s administrative team, said, “We liked the three people at the table symbolizing a sense of community. And we also liked the fact that the circle that represents the table is left open, suggesting that there is always room at The Welcome Table. The logo seemed to convey a ‘welcoming’ feeling, which is exactly what we hoped for.”
