Biggest and brightest

BANGOR DAILY NEWS PHOTO BY KEVIN BENNETT

The Full Wolf Moon in January was given its name by Native Americans because wolf packs howled hungrily out-side their villages during this time of year. It is also called the Old Moon or the Moon After Yule. According to NASA, Saturday night's moon appeared about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than some other full moons this year. This full moon was the brightest one you’ll see in a long time, according to the Web site Suite101.com that says earth’s neighbor was at perigee (the closest in its orbit) at 222,138 miles at 6 p.m. It was also the “third brightest of the 25 year period from 1993 to 2017, the site said. Suite101.com Media Inc. is a private Canadian company based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The picture of the moon would be prettier with a tree or something else instead of transformers on a light pole with it.

eastmainer-----Perhaps you should have taken the photo and moved a tree to the proper location??

Maybe the person taking the photo should have gone past there door step to get it.

I should have. It was beautiful coming up over the horizon while the sun was still shining on the treetops. There is nothingattractive about transformers. Now, if he'd had it looking like it was sitting on top of a plain pole --as though it was a light--that would have been cute.

Anybody else like the picture ?????

Beautiful moon.... I went for a late night snowshoe hike and it was absolutely beautiful.

Perhaps those of you that don't like this kind of photography, should get jobs at the BDN as a photojournalist, and then you could teach Mr. Bennett how to do a better job!

I can't believe BDN published that photo. Really. I'm sorry Kevin, but there's no shortage of trees or water as a better backdrop. At least crop the picture next time.

Cute?? You people just don't get this, do you? You simply can not "arrange" the moon., trees, street lites the way you want them! Or set up poles.Without the transformers, you would have no light! Now that is more realisiic then the moon sitting on top of a pole, don't you think? And it certainly was beautiful!

All you would have to do is walk around a bit and find a suitable background for the moon. Louise, you're the one that doesn't get it. The picture is ugly ! Certainly won't be a contender in the ' Best Picture Of The Year.'

Yes, the moon is beautiful.

Yes, that picture is horrendous. And if that person was anything of a real photographer, they would have gone out somewhere where nature is prevalent, not show a beautiful moon next to that transformer. I'm sure they could have walked down the road somewhat. It's Maine, there's nature pretty much EVERYWHERE.

Guess I didnt realize there were so many professional photographers here! How come you all aren't working at the BDNs with Mr. Bennett? Oh, and believe me, I Know it's Maine! But, I guess it's a lost cause to try to make a point with all these professionals!

What IS your point Louise ?

Man........some people really need a check up............Kevin takes great pictures and being a photographer often times is like being a painter, its in the eye of the artist.Maybe he was taking into perspective that not everyone has a pristine view of the beautiful full moon, just maybe he was taking it in the perspective of an inner city person taking a walk about and found this shot interesting...just maybe...I'll give him the benefit of having an imagination.Nice shot Kevin

Well if that's his perspective, or the perspective of inner city people taking a walk in the moonlight, I suppose he thinks it's a great picture. A building in Bangor or a church steeple would have been nice. There ARE trees in the city.

Hopefully someone else took a picture last night and will send it in to the BDN and they will print it.

Maybe Kevin is a great photographer , but this picture doesn't show it.

eastmainer, I naturally assumed that you had done your own photography work, as your opion of this one is so negative! You can see trees, buildings, steeples, any time. If your really in to that sort of photo. And crosshaul, you are so right, Mr. Bennett is an artist of photography. To each their own! And eastmainer, you would never get my "point". Wasted time!

What a riot!! A friend of mine has been telling me to tune in and check out the entertainment on this site as only a Mainer's sense of humor could appreciate!! She wasn't kidding!!! Mr. Bennett, I hope your thick skinned as you read through your critical "admirers." My opinion, for what it's worth: Great Composition! The first and only thought I have when looking at this photo, is that even an ugly transformer representing man's intelligence and great accomplishments will always pale in comparison to our Heavenly Father's magnificent creations. Thank you for sharing that with us Kevin.

Barbie, your interpretation of the photo is great. Kevin should have had a quote like that along with his photo. It would have made the picture sensible. I still would like to see some pictures others may have taken to show the beauty of the Brightest Biggest moon of the year.

It has a place to buy this photo. Eastmainer, I dare say you won't buy one right?

Is there something wrong with my computer? The background is so dark on the moon picture that I can't make out what's there besides the moon. It could be anything. Can you all see a transformer clearly? I think I can make out a vertical pole but nothing else.

No, I won't be buying the picture ! LOL

You could buy the picture and crop out the transformer that I can't see. :-)

Then I'd have just a picture of the full moon and all by itself it would look real small and lonesome. Not being able to see the transformers is A Good Thing as Martha would say . LOL . If you want to see a transformer you can , on nearly every light pole . They all look somewhat similar.

That is what I thought eastmainer lol.. Thanks for replying!!

I'm sorry, but this picture still is really bad. If this were to go up in any gallery I'm sure NOONE would buy it. (And I think you can buy all the photos here onb BDN, if I'm not mistaken). I'm not saying that he is a bad photographer, I'm saying he should of picked a better picture. He was probably using a digital camera, which is great, but were he to use a an actual 35mm or something where you actually had to think about the picture because every shot counts, I doubt he would have taken this picture at all. The moon itself is pretty, but that pole is still really an eyesore. Oh, and I basically posted this so Barbie could get a good laugh. Enjoy.
