Towns soundly reject consolidation proposal

As expected, voters in the towns of Hermon, Levant and Carmel on Saturday rejected a proposal to consolidate their schools into a state-mandated regional school unit.

In Hermon, 335 residents voted against the proposal, while only 22 supported it, according to Town Clerk Carol Davis. Similar lop-sided results were reported in Carmel (167 against, 10 in favor) and Levant

(174-16), the two communities that make up SAD 23.

By voting not to consolidate, all three towns could be subjected to a penalty assessed by the state.

Several other cities and towns across the state have either voted on consolidation proposals or are planning to in the coming weeks.

According to information released by the state Department of Education last week, 17 reorganization plans were approved by voters while nine

were rejected. Another 30 were pending.

VOTE NO MONSON, DOVER, GREENVILLE, SHIRLEY, GUILFORD, CHARLESTON, SEBEC, BOWERBANK, MILO, BLANCHARD

and others

VOTE NO BREWER, ORRINGTON, HOLDEN, DEDHAM AND AIRLINE COMMUNITIES, DON'T LET THE STATE DRIVE THIS DOWN OUR THROATS.......

Susan Gendron, do you smell the aroma of roofing asphalt? Where's my feather pillow?

Towns don't save money....they get fined for not joining.... but here in Washington County there aren't enough children to make up the quota... what we suppose to do.. ??? have the TEENS get pregnant for the "future" of the schools.... the district that Susan wants goes 100 miles.... from Danfort to Dennysville.... Susan come visit and find out most of Washington County are retired folks and no kids...and homes are spread out more than Portland and Augusta..   FOLKS  PLEASE VOTE NO  NO NO NO

The problem in Washington county is nobody wants to give up their schools.

what town will eventually give up their identity.? and with a rivalry like Calais and Bailyville, can you blame them.

And taking on these smaller towns is going to be a burden and expense to the taxpayers of the larger towns.

But the again what are they suppose to do???

First people complain that the state gov't spends too much and charges too high taxes, then the gov't tries to come up with plans to reduce spending, then the people vote 'no' b/c they don't want change or to feel inconvenienced, then they go back to complaining that the gov't spends too much and taxes the people too much...make up your mind people, saving money requires CHANGE, not the STATUS QUO!

"By voting not to consolidate, all three towns could be subjected to a penalty assessed by the state."

For many of these districts, it will cost more to consolidate than the penalty that the State is assessing. For the smaller communities, it's a no-brainer vote.

You're either voting to have the state fine you X or to consolidate at 3X the cost.

Duh.
