Down East firefighters battle two fires

MACHIAS, Maine — A morning fire destroyed a house on West Kennebec Road in Machias, and in Addison a fire partially damaged a dwelling.

When firefighters arrived at the Brent Hooper house on West Kennebec Road at around 11 a.m., Machias Fire Chief Joey Dennison said Monday, they saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building.

No one was home at the time.

Dennison said that firefighters had not yet determined where the fire might have started.

“It is still under investigation,” he said.

He estimated the loss at $150,000. Hooper was insured.

Firefighters from Machias, Marshfield, Machiasport, Jonesport and East Machias battled the blaze.

In Addison, around 8 a.m. Monday firefighters were called to a structure fire on the Ridge Road near the town’s post office.

The house belonged to Linda Smith, who was not home at the time. Chief Sheldon Trundy said a caretaker discovered the fire.

When firefighters arrived they saw smoke coming from the house.

“A pipe broke somewhere in the house, and it pumped the water out of the boiler and a little safety switch didn’t kick the boiler off so it kept running, and it caught fire in the boiler room,” Trundy said.

Trundy said he did not know whether Smith was insured. He estimated damage at $10,000.

Thirty-five firefighters from Columbia, Columbia Falls Harrington and Jonesport in addition to Addison firefighters fought the fire.

35 responded..but they toned it out 3 times for the home department and mutal aid depts. .. maybe if they had a faster response there wouldnt have been so much damange.

GW's fault!!!!

sidelineobserver...since you know so much about firefighting....I hope you hopped into your bunker pants and SCBA and grabbed a hose line or maybe you hoofed a 5" supply line to the nearest hydrant....which was probably a good hike away, unless they were lucky? Well, did ya?

Do they have a full time dept? I don't believe they do...remember you live in rural Maine and the dept is probably small and purely volunteer.

I suggest you join your local dept...you apparently already have a scanner...and heard the tones. Maybe they could use another set of hands and less flapping of the mouth.

Just a thought.

redsoxgrl: just look at their name "side line observer" obviously too fat or lazy to "get in on the game", they can only observe from the sidelines and make ignorant comments. You are right, less flapping of the mouth and more team work but I don't think you would want this ignorant person on your team. sidelineobserver is ignorant...keep up the good work firefighters!!!!

I agree, concerned08.
