BANGOR, Maine — Consumers might expect a top 10 list of dirtiest hotels to include establishments in densely populated areas such as New York City or Miami.

But what about Bangor?

Turns out a hotel in the Queen City ended up recently on a rather dubious list compiled by the interactive Web site TripAdvisor.com. The Travelodge Bangor on Odlin Road was ranked No. 7 on the consumer Web site’s top 10 list, which relied solely on reviewers’ own ratings of cleanliness.

“This hotel is disgusting in every sence (sic) of the word,” wrote one reviewer. “I have stayed in many hotels in my life, once in one that charges by the hour, and I think there was less DNA in that one. I do not recommend staying here to any one. I wouldn’t stay here again if it was free.”

“Never have I stayed in a more filthy disgusting hotel,” wrote another. “You should be ashamed to have your name on it.”

“I actually can’t even say what the hotel was like because the service at the front desk was so horrific I walked out,” wrote a third reviewer.

Other posts had headlines that read, “OMG!!!” “Nasty, nasty, nasty,” and “Absolutely horrific.”

Of the 32 consumer reviews attached to Travelodge Bangor, 25 gave the hotel one star out of five. While most comments associated with the Travelodge Bangor were negative, some were not.

“We had no problems with our reservation and when we arrived the clerk was polite and the room was clean,” wrote one customer. “We found the beds comfortable and weren’t bothered unduly by being so close to the highway; the following morning we agreed we could have done much worse.”

“[F]or $53 a night you can't expect an honor bar full of wine,” wrote a second. “We found the clerk helpful, the room was clean. The A/C worked! And the bed was comfy! I have stayed in better, and I’ve stayed in worse.”

V.K. Patel, manager of the Travelodge Bangor, declined to comment this week on the hotel’s inclusion on TripAdvisor’s top 10 list. He also declined to show a room to the Bangor Daily News, but he said the hotel has had some setbacks recently because of a leaky roof.

According to permits filed with the city, the Travelodge Bangor is owned by Bangor Rodeway Inn Inc., and the hotel formerly was known as the Rodeway Inn. The contact name listed for the company is Gary Vogel, an attorney based in Portland. He did not return calls for comment.

Bangor code enforcement officer Dan Wellington said the hotel — and all city hotels — is inspected every year. He said the Travelodge building is old and probably could use some updates, but he hasn’t seen any red flags.

The corporate owner for all Travelodge hotels is Wyndham Worldwide, which also owns several other popular chains. Christine Da Silva, a corporate spokeswoman for Wyndham Worldwide, released this statement about the TripAdvisor list:

“We inspect each of the hotels in our system at least once a year to ensure they meet our exacting quality and service standards. When a hotel fails to meet those standards, we notify the owner that specific actions must be taken within a specific amount of time to address its deficiencies. Hotels that make a good-faith effort to re-solve their problems may be given time extensions to comply. Hotels that fail to resolve deficiencies are subject to termination from our system. We are re-evaluating the properties mentioned in the TripAdvisor list to assess the situation at those hotels.”

The top 10 list was released earlier this month by TripAdvisor and featured in a story in USA Today two weekends ago. Wyndham also owns the Days Inn franchise, which had three locations on the list.

Kerrie Tripp of the Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau said that although the Travelodge Bangor is not a member, it was unfortunate that any Maine establishment made such a list.

“It bothers us in the sense that we always want to have our best face forward,” said Tripp. “With any of these online sites, there is always the opportunity for negative and positive comments. We hope that consumers do research not based solely on one comment.”

Besides, it could have been worse for the Travelodge Bangor.

Hotel Carter in New York City was named the dirtiest hotel in the United States for the third consecutive year by TripAdvisor. According to published reports in 2006, a woman’s body was found stuffed into a trash bag hidden under a bed in one of the hotel’s rooms.

The full top 10 list may be found online at: http://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelersChoice-c1. Other area hotels also may be searched on that Web site.

i've never been to that hotel, but that whole area - even cheap seats are run down and dirty.

this is the one area in bangor that could benefit from a revival. the little bangor nobody knows about.

"Bangor code enforcement officer Dan Wellington said the hotel — and all city hotels — is inspected every year. He said the Travelodge building is old and probably could use some updates, but he hasn’t seen any red flags." Hmmmm.... maybe he needs to stay there short of rose color glasses.

I think the recently arrested Bubba Jacks owner is part owner of this place?

That area does need some help. I wish that entire area could be re-developed.......a Bass Pro Shop, Great Wolf Lodge, Stadium Seating Movie Theater, Cracker Barrel and other new restaurants would be my proposal.

I read reviews like this from time to time, but I end up ignoring a lot of them. Unhappy people are much more likely to post reviews than happy ones. I sometimes suspect that those unhappy ones are unhappy over the way they were treated regarding something for which they themselves were at fault.

Anyway, I ignore complaints that have an unduly shrill tone, or have misspellings or poor grammar. This reporter should have done the same. What a non-story.

I have had the same comments from folks who come from my corporate offices to stay in bangor that dislike many other places here too but it is so subjective. These same folks praise the places in the andover mass and PORTLAND area that I have stayed at that I hate.

It is not news that customer service in Maine is bad. I have talked to so many people about this, mostly out of staters. Most Mainers only have this standard so they cannot even see it. I think it is so funny though that Mainers think people in Mass and NY are rude. Most small business customer service in Maine is very condescending and unappreciative. I think most in Maine have forgot the SERVE in service, no the the opposite. I believe this service climate contributes to the poor business growth and success in Maine for sure. One of the biggest I hear people mention are wait staff and staff and store cashiers.

And I don't want to get into the driving issues around Maine. I would rather drive blindfolded in Boston than in an armored car in Bangor.

I love how the cite is discounted but if it were a praise for something in Maine people would treat it as cardinal empiricism.

More on the standards-- people think Tri-city Pizza is pizza.

What a shame that they commented on this place...you think with Hollywood slots down the street that they would invest to make some updates. I've stayed in a few hotels in and around the mall area and they all could use some updating

I have stayed in some serious dumps all over the country. Some places I didn't even dare to get in the bed. Yuck. Anyway, there are plenty of nice hotels rooms available in Bangor. Several brand new facilities in fact. But $59 bucks per night is not going to get you much! I think Cheeky has had too much to drink with those comments. Apparently you don't hold Maine in very high esteem. Actually, there are many different styles of pizza. Most consist of crust, tomato sauce and cheese. You probably wouldn't know a true pizza if it hit you in your piehole you condescending know-it-all. Stay away Cheeky - stay away!

I noticed things going down hill when people from Ma. moved here to escape to a better life and brought all their city life ways with them.

I'm worried about my beloved hometown. Seedbag hotels. Crumbling infrastructure. Gambling economy. Paralyzed City Council. Failed airport. The list goes on......

The sad thing is that it doesn't have to be like this.

I agree with the negative comments about this dive. I live in Bangor, but last year my wife and I had to spend a night in a motel because of some plumbing issues in our house. We stayed at the Bangor Travelodge and that was a big mistake! It was by far the filthiest place we have ever seen. I wouldn't recommmend that dump to anyone.

Sounds like this place is going to go under.

Bangor, this is your future!!!!!!!!! No pride. Crappy Chamber of Commerce. run by Demonrats. Ain't going to get better. How about the increased gang and drug activity? You'll continue to accept and very shortly, your little part of the world will become a 3rd world Hellhole.

We made the mistake of staying at this location this past summer. The carpet was stained, there was something splattered all over the back of the door, the a/c was so loud it couldn't be used and the beds had a funky odor. We ended up staying because no one else had anything available and it was late.

If Travelodge inspects the property they must be giving him plenty of notice so he can clean up the best rooms. This is probably the reason why he wouldn't let the BDN see a room.

I believe it. I booked a room at the Portland Travel lodge 2 years ago for a girls trip. The first room we got pulled the sheets back and BOTH beds were stained with blood.. The sheets and the pillows. They moved us to the room next door. I bed had blood on the bottom sheet the other looked urine stained and the sink and tub were full of hair.... I assume that the frequent fliers of there places are probably drug users and the help could care less about cleaning the room. I got my money back and stayed at a really nice hotel. NEVER again will I go with an economy lodging establishment!

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT ALL THE BAD THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING, WHY NOT LOOK AT THE GOOD THINGS. ITS BEEN A LONG TIME SENSE I HAVE BEEN THERE, BUT I WILL BET THERE IS ALOT GOOD GOING ON.

Cherry, gotta agree with the standards comment, and Tikitorch, seen some pretty nasty sh@# in Ptown hotels too.

When I book a cheap motel in Florida for a week or 2 vacation, I make sure I bring slippers so not to walk barefoot on the carpet, buy some cheap sheets at the local walmart and leave them behind when I leave, and go to housekeeping and get a comforter fresh from the dryer. You do what you have to....

When the price is low the facility is going to be low in quality. There are no free lunches.

It doesn't take much effort to make a place look bad; however, that same amount of effort toward correcting the problem could do wonders. I have never stayed there, in fact, haven't driven in Bangor since October 1984. My last overnight stay in a commerical establishment was in Brewer in July 1975. I was born and raised in Bangor and feel proud to announce that fact. I still have family in the area which will always remain dear to me.

I have never stayed there, but I can tell you that if the India indians are running the place, cleanliness is at the bottom of the list. I have stayed over the years at many motels, and Travel Lodge has been one of the Cleanest over all. The corporate entity that franchies these motels are only interested in the fees, and never inspect the premises.

I love this hotel...one of the few places in Bangor that rents by the hour.

Anyone that has stayed there and have been disatisfied needs to open a class action lawsuit against the owner. I'm filing one today.

Hey daremom, why not dare not to write racial slurs on here. I dare you.

If they are not working there they are at the 7/11's. They make good doughnuts. Or if you need to find one just go to a liquor store, usually a few there. But if you go to India Americans are running the 7/11"s.

LQQKatme, thank you oh so very much for bringing us into the leaky septic tank that is your mind.

LQQKatme:

Patel is an Indian title that represents some of the castes that are predominant in the Indian state of Gujarat that are either agriculturalists (farmers) or land owners.

You munch.

I worked as a chambermaid when I was in my teens. The pay is so small and you only have so long to do a room. I will tell you all this..... The same dirty blankets are put back on the bed along with the bedspreads. Nasty. Most of the time the shower gets rinsed down. Not washed. There is so much DNA in many of these places it would light up like a Christmas tree with a black light! Nasty, filthy, rotten.

In almost any of these places I have stayed in I always ask for cleaning supplies, fresh sheets, blanket and spread. I clean and make the beds fresh. Think about remote controls, headboards every service. Clean it yourself or risk the chance of contamination.

Smells like curry??????? Or body odor??????/ Or both???????? I went throught the airport a few years ago and the security guard at screening was hating it. This couple didn't bath and they stunk like a skunk.

I am thoroughly disgusted with the comments here, particularly the ones made by those who say people are too quick to use the "R" word, such as SteveyDee. It is also very distressing to me that the BDN isn't doing a better job of moderating these posts.

Hello! Is the public at risk here?? Maybe Inspectors should get in there and really take a look at the place. I'm sure they will wait until the expiration date comes up. Mold? Infectious Disease? Anything Else?

I stayed in a place in Ohio, that was straight out of Norman Bates. I was 17 at the time and traveling with my parents (back in 2003). I didn't want to get out of the room at night to even get ice - and I'm a pretty big guy - when I did go out and get it and ask for it, the manager came by with a bag - scary right?

Brewer MotorLodge

I stayed there once for a few hours with a couple friends.

Place is crap.

The one thing I have always noted is that cleanliness is subject to individuals and not all individuals ideas of cleanliness are the same. Perhaps the inspectors doing the inspecting live in the same kind of filth at home, whereby making filthy hotel/motel rooms acceptable to them. Inspectors should be made to watch video's as examples of what is and isn't acceptable, that way when things are not as they should be, the inspectors can be held accountable.

Stained sheets, hair in sinks, stained carpets and blood on any surface just isn't acceptable no matter what!! I say "shut these places down" until they can pass inspection! If they lose money because they have been closed, then they might think twice about spending a little more time cleaning them up in the first place.

It's kind of amazing how many people sit at home every day and complain about every single thing that they read.

I actually didn't say anything bad at all. Read real close. I didn't call anyone anything. Quit trying to find stuff mother hen. LOL!!!! You are reading into it too much.

If one asks questions that does not make him a raciest. One that speaks facts does not make him a raciest.

I think you know what a racist remark is. When you say something is true of an entire race, it's racist. Were you talking about the hotel staff? No. You were talking about "a couple at the airport." That's called "lumping people together," STD, and it is racist. Look it up.

I worked for a company in the late nineties that contracted with this motel and it's condition at that time was so bad that we refused to stay there. Appears that nothing has changed. Bangor's inspections along with those of the corporate people certainly leaves much to be desired if they haven't seen problems at that place over the last ten years.

Sounds like a good place for a quickie. Bring your own sheets!

I'm itching already.....guess there was a reason behind the old saying flea bag motel....inspectors, Ha! ....have seen lots of them bought off...

I've been in high price hotels that were nasty too. To long a story to get into details but we marked the corner of sheets at a fancy hotel in North Conway when they let us leave our baggage in the room before they cleaned it. When we came back it was the same sheets and hair all through the bathroom. I'm talking $200 a night

But Anne, I didn't say they smelled like a sewer. The security guard did.

Rent the room for a few hours... come on people go Home if you need it that bad..... I always inspect the room before I pay... look at the mattress for bedbugs... dirt... and under the bed to see just how clean it is... and if the tub/shower shows rust stains it just isn't for me... YES by all means inspections are the thing and if one inspector can't do it all than hire more.... also don't let the hotel owners know you are coming cause I am sure they keep one room in PERFECT shape just to show you....

Yes, inspectors can be bought...but they can also lose their jobs! Contact the Maine Attorney General with your complaints as well as the name of the inspector in your area!

Sounds like the THEY are coming up here

While I am not arguing at all that this place may or may not be dirty, I dunno, never stayed there, never would since I live here in town, all I can say is websites like Tripadvisor, epinions, yelp, planetfeedback etc are all chock full of complainers. I take little stock in what people on those websites have to say.

Good thing this place does not advertise with the BDN. Otherwise, this story never would have been written.

A little off from the path of this story, but I just read a few weeks ago that many of the bigger hotels are taking away amenities or will be charging for things they were historically complimentary, like soap, shampoo, toothpaste etc since there is such a decline in clientele. Maybe some of the more “economical” lodging establishments should invest in a good general cleaning and hire people who truly CLEAN the rooms after each use. This may result in a big boost of income for them during this economic mess

-

As far as a lawsuit I think that we are a sue happy environment these days and need to givve such things a res. Even though I feel I got less than what I had paid for, I did gey my money back and I am thankful I had enough funds to go to a nicer place in it's stead there are many out there who could not have afforded to go to a better hotel.

Sounds like a good place to cook meth.........

Maybe if they would pay a half decent wage, housekeepers would take pride in their work and go the extra mile. They make crap for wages so you get what you pay for.

when i stay at a hotel, i clean it myself with my own cleaning stuff that i bring. you never know.

The general tenor of the posts in the BDN reminds me of the sort of scenario you might find in an old-fashioned Hollywood B-movie: You have a small town rabble of the usual stock characters -- perhaps a pompous self-satisfied banker or mayoral type or two blowing and snorting, a pack of tough guy wannabes sniggering in the background, a sniveling clergyman piously saying amen to it all, a silly kid merely saying something silly for the sheer thrill of it all, maybe a monstrously depraved soul seething away back in the trees and, of course, all the village idiots out in front of the parade. Frequently, they're marching merrily off to a lynching, yelling anonymous catcalls from within the faceless mob all the way. And then there is a small band of decent folk who are dismayed and offended at witnessing so much unkindness and stupidity, who feel compelled to step in the way of this mean calvacade. We all know who we are, don't we?

I've been told by people I respected -- and in the darker hours of doubt I've believed it -- that it's foolish to waste time attempting to change the minds of bigots and other idiots. But, as in the old movies, being witness to what is abhorrent -- be it gratuitous cruelty or racism or the circulation of other ugly attitudes and untruths -- calls upon decent folk to speak up. And, as in the old movies, their rebukes may not even shame or tempt consideration from the mouthpieces for this ugliness. The point is, it is the very example of speaking out against what is wrong that matters. Thank you, Anne. Thank you Mark. Thank you, all you others of similar spirit.

I agree that the Bangor Travelodge is not very nice, as we stayed there once prior to a trip from BGR Int'l. We had a non-smoking room that smelled bad. Because it was late, we toughed it out, but never again. Actually though, we have come across some other bad motels/hotels along the I-95 cooridor in New Jersey and in the Carolinas, which were worst then this place. Hopefully the owners will take this to heart and put a few bucks into the place. If not, Wyndham will probably pull their franchise, and next year it will be BOB'S Motel, or something along those lines. Oh.. THE THUNDERBIRD... I always chucked when I'd see these tacky motels with bigger then life names!

AMHI4ME------Little man, your comment was disgusting and ignorant, as usual. Your mother must be extremely proud of you! Who do you think you are anyway? And the n1gga was what did it for me. You need to be completely taken off here along with all your aliases!

AMHI4ME, SteveyDee, you make decent people sick. I guess that's probably your intent. You wear your stupidity like it's a badge of honor. LQQKatme, you should be ashamed of yourself but you're probably not smart enough to understand why. It is true, by the way LQQKatme, the Democrats are responsible for every dirty hotel room in the country. It's part of our master plan to make the whole country so dirty all you bigots and mouth-breathers will move somewhere else. Might I suggest Austria? From what I gather fascists like you are pretty much running the country there now. Oh, wait a minute, I doubt they'd allow dirty Americans to emigrate there.

Wow. Such hate and discontent. How bout we all just meet up at the old travel lodge and duke it out in the back lot. Reading these posts are cracking me up. Gotta piss in te kitchenette sink. Dont ice that drink.

they took my kingofmaine off finally... nobody likes to accept the fact Joyce McClain is dead, and its been over 28 years and THEY WILL NEVER find the killer.

NEVER.

What makes you so sure there wont be a conclusion to this murder AMHI4me. Quite a bold statement for the average BDn comment who5e

Travel lodge is a scum pit but....once I had to stay at Bangor Econo lodge and when I opened the door to my room I was greeted by a huge pile of dog crap on the floor! At least we hope it was DOG crap. We left and went next door to Ramada Inn, paid extra money but the room was very clean.

I say we meet at ruby tuesdays in Brewer for lunch.

Sure. Maybe bdn will pick up on it and write another informative story on maines slow decline.

In the years of traveling in maine and New Hampshire. Hockey camps, hiking trips, boarding etc. I have compiled one hell of a black list. Customer service and quality in this great state is slowly going to sh8t. This travel lodge and many companies across the state are examples of an economy in decline.

AMHI4ME...I think I know who you are! omg!

My husband and I stayed at this dump on Columbus Day weekend 2006. The only reason we stayed there was all other hotels were booked. It was the most disgusting filthy place I have ever seen. We only stayed one night and we slept in our clothes and didn't dare to use the shower. I shared this feedback with Travelodge, but they never addressed the issues of uncleaniness, they told me that these hotels are franchises.

PeterTaber. Which one are you?

Sounds like all you are saying is you like people who agree with you.

dandlmom I am not god... jesus maybe

boogyman, Peter Taber is the most awesomest one!

WOW !!! Didn't think an artical about a fleabag hotel would illicit such nasty, snide comments. The place IS A SH*#HOLE !!!!!! Can you spell Marriott ??? Keep making me proud Bangor !! lol

Oh. Thanks for the clarification anne

When can we start crappin' on Diva's again. Man that is some fun. Although by the look of the comments this is much more fun !!

Gosh... I didnt know we were all that Peter. It must be hard for you to convince us of the righteousness of your cause. It must wear on you. You must awaken daily and say, cannot the blind see? You sir are no different than the "sniveling preacher" you complain of. But your god is yourself. What an arrogant rant!! We all have a voice here... this is an equal playing field. All have a right to speak including the "silly kid merely saying something silly for the sheer thrill of it all". You sir are a Megalomaniac filled with a overwhelming sense of your own importance. You must continually be going over the newspaper clippings of yourself. Do you have them in a scrapbook? I have some disturbing news for you. Sir, you not such a big deal. Get over yourself.

Erm, vichet...what you're doing now?

Projection.

Funny that such a broad-minded person as yourself ignores all of the half-wit racist comments and jumps on peter.

Actually, not funny. Disappointing.

Pam, I have to commend you on your patience... I'm afraid I would not be nearly has patient as you have been. The individual or individuals that committed this crime, have had their freedom far too long!! No matter how old they are, I hope when they're caught they spend the rest of their lives in prison for this crime!!

My above post was place on the wrong article....

I'll tell you the Holiday Inn is always really bad and very expensive now. The fairfield inn is the same price. Very very nice now and an awesome continental breakfast. I have heard a lot of bad things about a lot of hotels. Yeah think about it. If they spent half an hour cleaning each room they would never get done. A good source of antibodies!!

days inn...bangor .....worst dive we've ever stayed in....never again.....I'd sooner sleep in a trailer inlagrange....

I only responded to Peters last post... which is not too different on the surface from any other he has ever written here. I stand by what I said. All have a right to post here.

markko, I see that you did not dispute the validity of my point. But instead became one of the types he railed against.

I wonder if he has to special order doors so his fat head will fit through it.

This is why I only stay at a Westin.

I visit Maine a lot. It's a beautiful state, and the budget hotels are wicked scummy. LOL.

BlueCollarBob, How to respond? I forgive you for your mean spirited rant against me , but isn't it true that whenever standards are lowered( education, manners, cleanliness, attitudes and on , and on, and on) Moonbats , and liberals have only themselves to blame. there is no sanity left in America. I am thinking of moving to DC or Mogadishu where it's safe and my family will have a future.

I stayed in a pretty nasty hotel in Hampton..the whole place smelled like barf! They were renovating too and it was exactly like that commercial on tv! It was bad!

AMHI4ME...no I think closer to DORK! haha :D

Bangor still needs an ENEMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Cheeky, I read your comments about wait staff and store cashiers being rude. Just curious, have you ever worked in customer service? If not then you shouldn't be so quick to judge. I worked as a store cashier for many years and I can tell you first hand that most (not all, but most) cashiers may come across rude only because of the customers who come in to the store and treat the cashier as if they were the gum on the bottom of their shoe. You can only take so much of people degrating you and hollering at you over things that aren't your fault to begin with before you develop an attitude that the general public as a whole are nothing but a-holes! It's kind of hard to put on a happy face when you get treated like that. Now I'm not saying that all customers are like this, but trust me it only takes one jerk to ruin your whole day. Maybe if people would learn to treat service workers with a little more respect instead of treating them like slaves, there would be much better customer service in the world.

We stayed at the Travelodge last spring because we had an early flight to go on vacation and wanted something cheap for the night. It could have been a lot worse for the price. I figure you get what you pay for. A couple of months later we stayed at a more expensive motel down the road and actually found drug paraphenalia under the mattress. There was a burst spoon under the mattress. Thankfully there were no needles. Management then inspected the room and gave us a 20 dollar discount woo-hoo. I haven't stayed there since either.

that should have been burnt spoon not burst lol

lol..I wouldn't have noticed the difference sassy

Patel !!??

An Indu ?

Figures, the hotel rooms are garbage for that only reason. They are cheap and only hellbent on making a profit.

I've had bad experiences in the motels here in maine but you should try some of the redneck ones in the south.....I got a room in one in south carolina that had a 24 inch hole in the sheet...I think it was worn out from being so dirty it just rotted away...no mattress cover..I shiver just thinking of it....didn't bother the owner any...needless to say I told him where to shove his room...had similiar experiences in all the others I stayed in when I was in the hospitable south......lack of cleanliness seem to be the norm....
