Canaan man arrested in home invasion

HARTLAND, Maine — Somerset County Sheriff’s Department detectives have arrested a Canaan man after an investigation of an armed home invasion and robbery that was reported at 12:33 a.m. Thursday on Route 23.

According to Detective Sgt. Carl Gottardi III, initial reports indicated that two men forcibly entered a residence and stole several things. The men used clothing to conceal their faces and were armed. Although Gottardi would not release details of what weapons were used, one victim in the home, an adult male, suffered a laceration during an altercation with the robbers and later was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital for treatment.

Later in the day, the Sheriff’s Department obtained a search warrant for the home of Gary Page on Hubbard Road in Canaan. During the search detectives found drugs, including marijuana and pills, and drug paraphernalia as well as property believed to have been stolen during the home invasion or used in commission of the invasion.

Gary Page, 26, was arrested and charged with Class A armed robbery. More charges relating to the home invasion and other matters will be forthcoming against Page, the department said in a press release.

There were three people in the home at the time of the robbery, Gottardi said, and the victims were threatened to turn over specific items that the robbers were seeking. He would not confirm that the victims were familiar with the robbers.

Gottardi said three detectives and five deputies went to the scene of the robbery and a Sheriff's Department K-9 attempted to track the perpetrators.

I am sure that there is more to this story than originally posted, there almost always is.

The people responsible for this are in with the group that has been repeatedly stealing from Hartland and the surrounding area.

No one in town doubts who is behind the thefts, but the Sheriffs department has been unable to produce enough evidence to

convict. Besides, up until this point they have been careful not to commit felonies, but that appears to have changed.

I have less than a modicum of respect for the legal system, but I wish that the defendants had worded their statements to the

Police a little more strongly. If he had a laceration on his arm, who was he to know that the intruders didn't have more malicious intent?

I would have pressed attempted murder charges. I have personally been stolen from by this group,

but it went unreported because the item was $60, and thus not worth wasting a day of work giving statements to the

police, and that I knew that nothing would come of it.

I do believe in Karma, and hope that they go down for the legal limit of years in prison.

The fine amount is inconsequential, as it would never be paid.
