Leak in Brewer leaves area without water

BREWER, Maine — Residents along North Main Street, north of Indian Trail Park, did not have water when they woke up Tuesday due to a massive break in the water main that feeds the area.

At around 9:15 p.m. Monday employees at the Brewer Water Department noticed the water level at the Whiting Hill water tank was dropping fast, Superintendent Mike Riley said.

“That told us we had a leak,” he said. “Usually a big leak like this surfaces pretty quickly. It was very difficult to track down” because the break occurred near a culvert and the water was running directly into the river.

The 10-inch water main was mangled by the fluctuating recent temperatures, Riley said.

“Pipe was sheared right in two and had a whole in the top,” he said.

Crews are working on the problem now and should be done by Tuesday afternoon, when water will be restored, Riley said.

HMMMMMM thats odd because we lost water last night just before 9 and we heard on the police scanner that there were alot of people calling saying they didnt have water. It was back on this am when we got up. We live no where near North Main. We are imore than half way across town. Wonder if it effected a larger area than BDN actually investigated. I wish they would de a better job in their reporting instead of leaving alot out because they are quickly looking to fill space.

I do not know anything about the brewer water department, but I do know a 10 in water main is a very big piece of pipe.. In most water districts all the pipes link, perhaps when they noticed that a massive leak was draining the whiting hill tank they shut valves down to stop water from going out and in doing so it effected a larger area than just the area centralized around the break until they could narrow it down and close off only the valves necessary? why is everything the bangor daily news reports a conspiracy. If you folks can find better news why not do it?

Didnt state it was a conspiracy. I think they did a quick job on the reporting and should have waited to put it in the online addition until they had a full story not just a few lines. I have full faith in the water district and the good job they do in taking care of the city.

I had poor water pressure when I woke this morning, but this is the second leak of this type on North Main Street in the past 10 days or so. The first was just past the public boat launch and the first leak caused me to be without water for the night. My concern is whether there are more problems with this water line than the public (or the Brewer Water Department) really knows....

i hear the everglades are drying up and dying due to lack of water. perhaps it's all the irrigation and pipelines that florida set up to divert all it's water? no can't be, that makes too much sense. dying land because of human inhabitants? pshhhh ... this could just be another one of mother nature's way of saying "hey, you know what, i need water too"

I was without water for a few hours one night about 5 days ago or so. Then last night it was out again and was finally back by 4 this morning. I think there must have been something going on before last night.

Oh, and whoever wrote this article needs to use spellcheck, it should have been there was a "hole" in the top, not a whole.

The "whole" pipe had a "hole."
