Maine lawyer behind casino referendum suspended

By The Associated Press

LEWISTON, Maine — A Rumford attorney who initiated a referendum effort to build a casino in western Maine has been suspended from practicing law for six months and a day for violations of Maine Bar rules.

Maine Supreme Judicial Court Justice Andrew Mead ordered Seth Carey to demonstrate to the state Board of Overseers of the Bar that he’s undertaken further training in trial advocacy and professional ethics before he applies for reinstatement. Mead also ordered Carey to obtain the services of an attorney to mentor and monitor him for a year after he’s been reinstated.

The board investigated allegations of unethical behavior and incompetence brought by Maine attorneys and judges.

Carey spearheaded a campaign to locate a casino in Oxford County before a Las Vegas company took over from him. Maine voters rejected the proposal in November.

Amazing. Now I understand why people complain about the BDN trying to mislead readers. The Casino Referendum has nothing to do with the suspension. NOTHING. Yet it figures in the headline, the immediacy of the first sentence, and, of course, on the way out the door (memory of the last thing in the article) in the last paragraph. That is a writing trick. As I recall, the allegations revolved around providing poor services in criminal cases to the point where judges had to mention it. Nothing to do with casinos. Huh. Go figure.

Amazing indeed.

With all that went on at our venerable A.G.'s office - and he was allowed to 'carry on' for--- thus Mr. Carey must have REALLY erred.

There is much more to be looked at with the A. G.'s circle - that I suspect will never happen.

I just don't believe that there may be dishonest lawyers. BDN find the honest one and then you will have your news story.
