OLD TOWN, Maine — The mother of a teenage University of Maine student who suffered a fatal head injury at a party last weekend says she doesn’t blame anyone for her son’s death.

In an e-mail to the Bangor Daily News on Thursday, Susan Lyford of Milo said she wishes an ambulance had been called sooner when it was evident that her 19-year-old son, Dylan, wasn’t waking up. But, she added, there’s no guarantee earlier medical intervention would have saved his life, and even had he survived, he may have suffered irreversible brain damage.

“He would not have wanted to live if he couldn’t function normally,” she said.

Old Town police have released the names of the two young women who lease the apartment where Dylan Lyford suffered the fatal injury. The tenants of the apartment at 69 Stillwater Ave. are 19-year-old Rebecca Koscuiszka and 20-year-old Tania Riegelman. Both are second-year students at the University of Maine. Koscuiszka is a history major from Ridgewood, N.J. Riegelman is studying child development and family relations. Her records at UMaine list the Old Town apartment as her only address.

According to updated information from the police, Lyford attended a party at the residence that started Saturday night and carried over into Sunday morning. He is believed to have been consuming alcohol at the party. Between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Lyford was found at the bottom of a flight of stairs leading into the base-ment and was brought back upstairs to the apartment, according to the police report.

At about 10:30 Sunday morning, emergency crews went to the residence after receiving a report of an unresponsive male. Lyford was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary report from the office of the state medical examiner confirmed that Lyford died from a head injury consistent with a fall. Blood alcohol levels have not been released.

“Our family is devastated,” said Susan Lyford in her e-mailed message. “All we want is for people to hold on to the memories and remember Dylan for the child he was and the man he had become. … All we ask is that kids learn when someone hits their head you don’t let them go to sleep. Call for help. Maybe someone will re-member this and it will make a difference for someone.”

Once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for possible charges, according to the Old Town police.

There is nothing more scarey than sending your kids out to college. We know that more than likely that at times they will act recklessly and these things can happen or others around them will act irresponsibly. This could have happened to anyones child. My condolences to the famliy and friends.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. He sounds like a wonderful son and person. And hopefully , young people and others will learn from what happened to your son.

So very sorry for this young man's family. The person(s) whose name is on that lease should be held responsible for the wellbeing of her house guests. As someone who has much personal experience with that neighborhood, I can almost guarantee this was another example of kids being irresponsible and drinking far too much, and providing alcohol/drugs to this minor. We see it in this college town every weekend, kids staggering down stillwater ave. late at night, police cars with their lights flashing and running in and out of this house at all hours, to quiet the drunks. These kids need a good lesson in reality. Life is not just one big party. People get hurt and people die when you involve drugs and alcohol. it is not a college game, it is real life. these girls should go to jail for endangering the welfare of a minor, providing him with alcohol, not reporting an accident(probably because they did not want to get caught with a drunken minor in their home,) covering their own butts at the cost of this kids life!

Bless your heart Sue.I do hope young people learn a lesson from this tragedy.

truly sorry for your lots

charge the meddling kids.

What's Dylan trying to do with his hands in the photo? Is that supposed to be somekind of gang language?

Yeah because there are some really scary gangs at UMO. Get a life.

I am so sorry for Dylan's family. Sue, it will take a long time but you will learn to live with this tragedy. It leaves an empty spot in your life for a long time.

Joy, was all copious vile you spit out really nessessary? This kid was the same age as the ones you're so willing to prosecute. Of course someone should have called sooner, but I assume they didnt realize he was injured, and now this is something those present will have to live with the rest of their lives. How dare you use this familiy's tragedy for to voice your displeasure with UMO and its students. This family is enduring a pain that most cant even begin to fathom. Try and remember, this could have been anyones child.

Iseenow obviously doesn't have any clue... or kids... Peace out, Dylan. RIP. Condolences to the family.

meddling kids and their damned alcohol

Unfortunate accident for someone with such a bright future. My condolences to the family.

Every life lost deserves its own lesson to be learned and followed by the survivors. In honor of Dylan, let's think of the demonstrated potential of a rich life lost. Let's think of the ways to live life as a student. My condolences to Sue and family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family and to Dylan's friends at this tragic time...so many negative responses once again as to whom should be blamed for such a tragedy....the ones who rented the apartment? Maybe the ones who brought the alcohol? Maybe the store that sold the booze? Maybe the neighbors for not calling the cops? Maybe the ones that picked poor Dylan up and put him to bed ignoring the consequences from the fall? Maybe the University? I appreciate the comment from the Mom stating "she doesn’t blame anyone for her son’s death". The greatest injustice in today's society is that people are not held responsible for their own actions....in this case choices were made and decisions by this unfortunate young man lead to the horrific events that caused his death...society is always rushing in to accuse and charge another with an injustice when the individual's choices caused, in this case, Dylan to be in the wrong place doing things that he chose to do which eventually lead to his needless death....

It is exactly what I thought when I first heard this news..... IF they would have called for help he might be alive....I am glad to see this article for I hope it strikes a chord in each student.. Not all students choose to drink...but the ones that do need to learn their is consequences that go along with drinking...LOTS of them! Think before you drink ( I went to college for 3 years and never had a drink...it is possible)

PabMainer:

Well said and I agree 100%.

Such a sad story ... :(

19 years old and drinking, who supplied the alcohol? You would hope that a lesson will be learned from this tragedy, but it will not. Kids and adults alike think that they are invincible and that "this can't happen to me, I am too smart" but it continues to happen to underage kids all over the country. My condolences to the family, and I hope and pray that someday someone will learn ALCOHOL KILLS!!!!! Especially in the wrong hands and in the wrong circumstances.

Very sad tragedy. My son will be attending college in Calais starting in July, and that is my biggest fear, is the partying and if something were to happen. I hope this will bring light to other students that things happen like this and it only takes a second to lose someone. I believe in God but sometime it makes me wonder what the purpose of this was or for any young person to die, I guess we will never know the answer but I guess I wont ever like what the answer may be......My thoughts and prayer are with all if his family and friends..... May you find peace someday with this horrible tragedy.....

So sorry for your loss. So many teens drink so much at partys and they dont realize what could happen. I think most of us have overindulged before and have been lucky we werent hurt or killed. This is a tradegy but if someone can learn something from this then and realize just how much alcohol impairs ones judgement.........................

(Thats just what I was thinking)

(Its not a peace sign., Thats a gang sign from a wanna be gangsta rapper, that so many Kids do that dont have a clue... )

There has to be something done with all this college drinking. It has so gotten out of control, and this is only one incident that we have heard about..

My thoughts and prayers are with the family! There have to be stricter laws and they need to be enforced!!!!!!!!!!!

DanTechWriter and PabMainer: Your comments say everything I want to say.

Thank you for saying it so eloquently.

My condolences to Dylan's family and all those who knew and loved him.

Shame on those of you who use someone elses tragedy to vent your poison.

You have a right to your opinion, but really, what are you trying to prove?

damn alcohol.

I feel so bad for this family and the people he was partying with have no better judgment at that age then the victim.....that's right VICTIM whoever bought this alcohol needs to go to PRISON.

The mother blames no one,why dont all you people give it a rest.I bet he was an amazing kid ,if his mother is any indication, with her warm heart and unconditional forgiveness.God bless you and your family, during this horrible event.

My condolences to Dylan's family. This could of happened to any one of us parents posting here today, and deep down we all know it. Mamiejude says she wants stricter laws and better enforcement. What would she suggest a police officer following each kid around 24/7? Life is about personal responsibility, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So sad that in this case it didn't work. God bless Dylan's parents, family and friends, my heart aches for you.

I think Dylan's mother is a courageous mother to not hold full responsibility on these kids for her son's death. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May you be an example for others out there.

If you bring up this young man's Facebook account (surely to be deleted soon), you will see picture after picture of him with his college/other friends drinking and drinking. This in no way is an indictment of the young man himself but it is a statement about excessive drinking by college students and his Facebook site filled with drinking pictures is in no way exclusive. One wonders if this tragedy will be a wake up call to these young people to the shear stupidity and now deadly consequences of full on drunkeness. Sad...

I am very sorry for this families loss. It was an accident, no one has been reported for pushing him down those stairs! When I sent my eldest daughter to college far away, in 1997, 1998, 1999, this college allowed parties on campus and provided security and free rides by security so that no one left campus and no one died from alcohol poisoning. In 2000 and on the government got involved and threatened to cut certain funding from this college if they let this continue. So they had to stop. This sent the students off campus to parties where there was no security and free rides. Students were caught drinking and driving, a friend of my daughter was slipped the date-rape drug without her knowledge, and the fights ensued. Sometimes adults and the government don't operate with common sense. We, the taxpayers, allow this to continue as we continue to send duds to the capital. Our children, no matter how much we as parents lecture, will try things that they know are not good for them. We can only hope that there are others, in our absence, that will take care of them.

My sympothy is with your family in this time of tragedy,I could not imagine the loss and pain you are all going through at this time.My daughter graduated with your son and is so saddened by his death as well I can imagine are all that had the peiviledge of knowing your son.Kids are kids as much as we try to protect them in the end they make their own choices, life is a learning process,i wish there was a way to spare all of are children pain and protect them.My prayers are with all of you.

Kasdyln, I am not displeased with UMO, as once the kids are off campus it is not their responsibility to keep the kids safe. My displeasure stems from a young mans life ending so tragically and knowing that the ones who should have been looking out for him were not and will probably just walk away guilt free and go on to live their lives as though this never happened. And these same kids continue to party and provide drugs and booze to minors! They appear to have learned absolutely nothing from this young mans death. So yes, my copious vile does seem necessary!

BrianMurphy

I looked at it a few days ago. He's friends with 20 of my facebook friends!!!

I also looked up the 2 girls who had the apartment, one of whom's birthday was on that day he died

Makes me wonder - - -

Status: Dylan is feeling better

obviously

What is wrong with you Caeser? Why would you post that, do you not have a heart? What happened to Dylan is such a tragedy you shouldn't be mocking it you heartless jerk! And why do all of you people assume he was intoxicated? do you know his BAC at the time of the accident? NO you do not. My condolences to Sue and family, Dylan was a wonderful guy and will be truly missed.

First, my sincere condolences to the Lyford family. No one should have to endure that sort of pain and grief and I'm sorry for your loss. Having said that, it was an accident, and not one of you commentators can prove whether or not alcohol was a factor as the police have not released toxicology reports. Your comments blaming alcohol & society are shameful at best - this could very well be an example of human choice gone wrong, nothing else! What makes you think otherwise? The answer is your own ignorance and assumptions. Want to blame someone? Blame Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the legislators they've brainwashed and strong-armed over the years to advance their anti-alcohol agenda. Crusaders such as them won't be happy until everything is illegal and America will be nothing but a policed state where no one can enjoy themselves anymore. Congratulations, you're feeding their agenda with your idiotic remarks.

Why do you think his page will be deleted?

Let's see...30 of the 131 pictures this young man had on his Facebook site show him drinking alcohol. A number of pictures show the college drinking games such as funneling and popping quarters into cups all with the goal to drink as fast as you can in order to get as drunk quick as you can. Last night 60 minutes had a segment on just this topic where some college presidents are proposing lowering the drinking age to 18 or 19. Regardless of whether one thinks that is a good idea or not, as the segment showed, the extreme criminalizing of underage drinking has done nothing to ebb the use of alcohol by minors and some would argue has accelerated the house parties where high school and college students can drink to their hearts content without an ID - and worse, typically without any level headed sober overseer around to avoid a tragedy. Years ago when drinking spots on campuses were popular you did not see this extreme drunkenness that sometimes leads to such tragedies. I say if you can be forced by our country to go over and possibly get killed in that rotten war created by George Bush, you should be able to drink alcohol legally. The 60 minutes segment talked of providing a mandatory course in alcohol in high school after which a young person would be given a license for alcohol. When and if they are caught abusing that license, it is rescinded. Not a bad idea to consider.

im gann miss dylan sooooooooooo much he was a great guy u would have loved him if u met him he likes everyone
