Letters to the Editor

August 20 Letters to the Editor

Please take this opportunity to help the state’s cash-strapped Animal Welfare Program as well as the FIX ME Program — assistance with spaying and neutering for low-income pet owners - by signing up now for the ADOPT specialty license plate.
August 19 Letters to the Editor

I would like to know why the U.S. is involved in other countries' problems when we have so many problems here.
August 18 Letters to the editor

I am awestruck by the disconnect so many "experts" make between proposed energy solutions and global climate change, which is rarely part of the current discussion for or against increasing the oil supply. Are they just pretending that climate change does not exist? For instance, the argument over more oil drilling ignores the established facts that more oil is not an acceptable solution.
August 16 Letters to the Editor

Let's recap: Thirty-five Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked a bill that would have doubled heating aid to low-income families. One hundred sixty-two Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives blocked a measure that would make oil companies either drill on the 68 million acres of our federal lands and waters where they already have permits, or else lose the permits. (Why drill if more oil lowers the profit margin?)
August 15 Letters to the Editor

In 2001, Gov. Angus King declared that "domestic violence is public enemy number one." Unfortunately he was right, and worse yet, the enemy often resides in the home.
August 14 Letters to the Editor

I see the fair weather Red Sox fans are at it again. Since Manny Ramirez was traded, he has been villianized by everyone who - when he was hitting homeruns and driving in runs - thought Ramirez was the greatest player in baseball.I see the fair weather Red Sox fans are at it again. Since Manny Ramirez was traded, he has been villianized by everyone who — when he was hitting homeruns and driving in runs — thought Ramirez was the greatest player in baseball.
August 13 Letters to the Editor

This is perhaps my last letter expressing the bitterness and agony of losing my first grandchild, Joyce McLain to such a horrendous crime and murder. It doesn't get any worse than this.
August 12 Letters to the Editor

As a member of MDI Peace and Justice, I would like to respond to David Reed's comments (BDN, Aug. 2-3) regarding our display and message in the Bar Harbor Independence Day parade. Reed misunderstands our group's intentions.
August 10 Letters to the Editor

The U.S. Postal Service's response to the issue of Sutton Islanders getting their mail from the trash can at the end of their dock was typical of a large bureaucratic organization with a "one-size-fits-all" mentality.
August 9 Letters to the Editor

A few weeks ago in response to a question about the Iraq surge from Katie Couric, John McCain said: 'Col. MacFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that's just a matter of history.' Except it's not.
August 8 Letters to the Editor

As a resident of Tomhegan Township, I have been following the regulatory process involved in the proposed Plum Creek development project with great interest.
August 7 Letters to the Editor

I was somewhat surprised by a few of the remarks made in John Holyoke's article on sturgeon in Penobscot Bay (BDN, Aug. 2-3).
August 6 Letters to the Editor

Disclaimer: I'm only a taxpayer, not a developer. I left Maine in 1953 to earn a living and retired here in 1991. Returning, I find the anti-progress mind set here (and in most of the Northeast) puzzling, noting prosperity in other parts of the country that are pro-business.
August 5 Letters to the Editor

In a time when good news is at a premium, it was refreshing to read about University of Maine researcher Dr. Dagher’s recent testimony before Congress on wind power potential off our coast. While his vision of massive wind farms 20 miles off our coast may seem unrealistic to some, it is just the kind of thinking we need to put into action.
August 4 Letters to the Editor

In response to Mr. Graham's letter, "Credit where due," (BDN, July 27-28), I'd like to clarify: First, no self-respecting writer uses someone else's ideas, words or photos without express consent, and second, the publisher, the editors and this writer would never intentionally print an image without proper credit.
August 2 Letters to the Editor

Regarding the recent story on life expectancy for Washington County women: Economics may play a role, but personal choice plays the top role in health.
August 1 Letters to the Editor

So Manny earns 20 times as much money in a year than I earned in a lifetime. Tough living on those kind of wages for playing a child's game. And he has the unmitigated gall to complain about it.
July 31 Letters to the Editor

I appreciated the BDN's July 17 editorial, 'Bottle Bill Update,' lauding the success of Maine’s 30-year-old bottle bill and suggesting that it bodes well for a user fee on plastic grocery bags. However, it seems to me the BDN might try practicing what it preaches by reducing the use of plastic bags for delivering newspapers.
Letters to the Editor for July 30

July 29 Letters to the Editor

Regarding the recent story on life expectancy for Washington County women: Economics may play a role but personal choice plays the top role in health.
July 28 Letters to the Editor

I read that Sen. John McCain says, "when you win wars, troops come home." What I would like to know is how McCain feels about the war in which he was involved. Did the U.S. do well to withdraw from Vietnam, or should we have stayed longer?
July 26 Letters to the Editor

In Portland, Amtrak reports record high profits for its Downeaster train running between Portland and Boston. The BDN’s July 22 article states that profits are at record-breaking levels because more people than ever are riding the train and that has something to do with the high cost of gasoline.
