Fill your closet at PTC's annual costume sale Saturday, May 17, 2008 Think your closet is full? Trust me, you’ve got nothing on the Penobscot Theatre Company. Even if you wanted to sit on the balcony at the Bangor Opera House, you couldn’t because there’s simply no room. |
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 Embroidery is an art I usually practice freehand without the aid of transfers. However, I don't exclude them completely from my repertoire of stitch wizardry. |
Unity Historical Society site offers cemetery data Monday, May 12, 2008 In your town of heritage, might there be a historical society that has posted genealogical information on the Web? |
Saturday, May 10, 2008 Feet are the great equalizer. It doesn’t matter if you’re big, small, short or tall. You might be a dead ringer for Gisele Bundchen or you could bear a striking resemblance to the gal in the Planter's peanuts ad. But if you’ve got great feet, nobody can take that away from you. |
Success comes full circle for Killing Moon Friday, May 09, 2008 The Killing Moon’s story is a cautionary tale to all rock star hopefuls getting started in the music business — but it’s also a story about good luck, bad luck, and figuring out what really matters. Which, in their case, is the music. |
Tuesday, May 06, 2008 Once upon a time, in 1991, I needed a summer job. I was a woman of many skills. I knew how to supervise homework, see to the needs of five children and a husband, cook supper, fold laundry, feed the cat and carry on an intelligent conversation all at the same time - not exactly the skills most employers deem desirable. |
New grandson's roots in Maine and Minnesota Monday, May 05, 2008 The Washburns are among the numerous Mainers who emigrated to Minnesota. My younger son followed suit four years ago, and the morning of May Day 2008, Anthony and Heather (Taylor) Saucier became happy parents to son Aidan Wilcox Saucier. |
Saturday, May 03, 2008 It's a common phenomenon among rock stars: guitar face. You've seen it, whether it’s the overjoyed look of surprise of Eddie Van Halen, the deviant pout of Keith Richards, or the facial contortions of Carlos Santana. |
Saturday, May 03, 2008 When mum's the word, I know to keep my mouth shut. But when mom's the word, I want to shout it from the rooftops. Still, words can't adequately describe how great most mothers are. |
Friday, May 2, 2008 I had a media colleague say to me the other day, 'Man, I wish I got to write about rock stars for work!' While I cover more than straight-up rock 'n' roll in my position as a reporter here at the good ship BDN, I have to say, I do feel pretty lucky. |
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 A four-day visit to New York City is a manageable trip, but when you bring along 174 high school students, it can get a little interesting. |
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 The moment after a woman says yes to the BIG question, she is deluged by even more questions - and all of them have to do with the wedding. |
Monday, April 28, 2008 It stands to reason that people who appreciate the land would also feel connected to their personal roots. So what fun it was to find that the 2007 National Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year, Josiah and Kathleen Pierce of Baldwin, own Maine land that has, in part, been in the Pierce family for more than two centuries. |
Skirting the issue Saturday, April 26, 2008 Sure, Helen of Troy had the face that launched 1,000 ships, but I might just have the complexion that launched 1,000 songs. |
Friday, April 25, 2008 Forgive me, readers. I appear to have lost my mind. You see, this past week of unseasonably warm weather has turned my brain to goo. The balmy breezes enter one ear and go straight out through the other. |
Combined show to mark 30th year for quilt groups Tuesday, April 22, 2008 It's anniversary time. The Bangor Bear Paws quilt group and the Orono Quilters are celebrating 30 years of crafting fabric into bedcovers and other useful and decorative items. |
Obituaries a great resource for geneaology Monday, April 21, 2008 Obituaries can be a great source of genealogical information, and a wonderful remembrance of a loved one. |
Bidding ado Saturday, April 19, 2008 Sing it, kids. And no, I’m not talking Frank Sinatra. I’m talking Erich Kaiser of Bangor, whose online shop, My Antique Boutique, is a finalist in eBay’s Best in Stores contest. |
Second time around Saturday, June 23, 2007 If you're game for value, these thrift and consignment shops in the area can turn you bargani-hunting grounds into Elysian fields |
Threads of culture: Wabanaki textiles Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Bruce Bourque, chief archaeologist and curator of ethnography at the Maine State Museum in Augusta, is “learning another branch of anthropology,” he said in a talk he gave May 18 at Bangor Public Library. His learning process will culminate in a book to accompany an exhibit, “Uncommon Threads: Wabanaki Textiles, Clothing and Costume,” set to open at the museum in 2007. |
