CALAIS, Maine — Walkers soon will be on the “Move” to end Alzheimer’s disease during the second annual Calais Memory Walk.

The three-mile “We’re on the Move” walk along the city’s waterfront will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, and will start at the Unobskey College on Main Street.

Registration is at 8 a.m.; the walk starts at 9 a.m.

The organizers are hoping there will be 100 walkers this year.

Last year more than 30 people participated.

Organizer Dawn Winchester said Thursday she has had a lot of support for this year’s walk and there will be plenty of refreshments and water donated by local businesses.

This year’s raffle also will be bigger and better than ever. “We’ve already collected almost 50 items so far,” she said.

Something new this year, Winchester said, is all preregistered walkers who raise $25 or more will receive an official Memory Walk 2008 T-shirt.

In the event someone can’t walk on that date, they can preregister and do a virtual walk, she added. However, they must have their registration form and donations in by Sept. 20.

Winchester guarantees good weather. “We had a beautiful day last year and we are going to have a beautiful day this year,” she said. “I know it will be another great year.”

“Today, 78 million baby boomers are approaching the age of greatest risk for Alzheimer’s, and finding a cure is more crucial than ever before,” the group said in its brochure.

The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk funds help the organization offer care, support and education in communities nationwide for the estimated five million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease, the brochure added.

Money raised also goes toward advancing important research into better treatments and a possible cure.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s Web site talks about the symptoms: memory loss, especially of recent events, names, placement of objects, and other new information; confusion about time and place; struggling to complete familiar actions, such as brushing teeth or getting dressed; trouble finding the appropriate words, completing sentences, and following directions and conversations; poor judgment when making decisions; changes in mood and personality, such as increased suspicion, rapid and persistent mood swings, withdrawal and disinterest in usual activities.

Registration forms can be picked up at the Unobskey College.
