BELFAST, Maine — The Unity Foundation has awarded a $250,000 challenge grant to the Waldo County YMCA that will match new contributions dollar for dollar.

Unity also is encouraging participation through in-kind donations from Whitecap Builders, Cianbro Corp. and Viking Lumber that will account for $100,000 toward the match and provide construction support for the pool project.

This is Unity’s second contribution at the $250,000 level. The YMCA has begun to invite local donor participation by selling pool tiles to complete a new mosaic inside the facility.

The “Keeping the Promise” capital campaign supports construction of a pool complex that was part of the original plan for the YMCA. The facility will include a six-lane pool, a warm-water therapy pool and a hydrotherapy pool.

“Keeping the Promise” has raised more than $3 million toward its $3.75 million goal involving more than 370 donors.

The late Bert G. Clifford of Unity established the Unity Foundation as a public grant-making foundation in 2000. The Unity Foundation’s mission is to support sustainable, mission-driven nonprofit organizations through capacity-building initiatives, grant making and nonprofit management education.
