MARSHFIELD, Maine — A 17-year-old girl has been missing for more than a week, her family said Tuesday, and they have offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to her location and safe return.

Britany Carter ran away the night of Tuesday, Sept. 16, her father, Wade Carter, said Tuesday. The journal she left behind said she was headed to Boston. The next day the family notified the Maine State Police that she was missing. They also have registered her with the National Center for Missing Children.

“She just has been having some emotional issues lately with boyfriends and friends and rules and all that,” Wade Carter said. “We woke up in the morning and went to get her up and realized she wasn’t there. We found a journal, a list of what she needed to do, and she basically followed the whole thing.”

The Carters suspect that some of Britany’s friends know where she is but are not telling family members.

“All of her friends that we are aware of are still in this area and do not know anything or are not willing to share,” Carter said. “Someone purchased a Trac phone for her, but they state they do not know the number.”

Britany Carter has long blond hair and blue eyes. She is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 100 pounds.

She was class president at Washington Academy in East Machias and was a straight-A student. She is bright and personable, Carter added. “She is very good at talking to people. She is very nice, very polite,” he said. “She is not street-smart.”

“She also likes outdoor stuff, animals and history,” he said. “That’s why I think Boston comes to her mind because of the history of the old buildings down there. We had a class trip down there and she loved it. And I think she thinks she can just blend in and get her mind cleared.”

Wade Carter is with the Maine Warden Service. Grandparents Bob and Joan Carter used to own Helen’s Restaurant in Machias and the Machias Motor Inn.

The family said Britany was seen twice Thursday hitchhiking on Route 9. A woman walking her dog on Eastern Avenue in the Brewer-Holden area Sunday night also saw her. Carter said that as far as the family knows, Britany has no friends in the Bangor-Brewer area.

Carter said her journal indicated she planned to walk to Bangor and from there board a bus to Boston, and that she would not return home until she was 18 years old.

The difficulties started with a disagreement with her family over a boyfriend, who also is a juvenile. The Carter family had a protection order on the boy after the two had run away to Vermont for about 30 hours earlier this year and then returned home.

The family said the boyfriend has remained in Washington County.

“Britany needs help, and we need help locating her,” Carter said.

Britany does not have any identification with her, although she does have money.
