OLD TOWN – Donald W. “Sonny” Smart, 71, beloved husband of the late Joan J. Smart, passed away Dec. 16, 2004. He was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Lagrange, to parents Donald W. Sr. and Eva (Long) Smart. Sonny spent many years hand sewing shoes in Bangor and Old Town shoe factories. He later shifted career paths to become involved in law enforcement. His life long passion centered around the military and law enforcement. He dreamed of being able to follow his father’s footsteps into the Army. However, due to the disability he suffered at a young age, he was unable to attain that goal. Becoming a police dispatcher enabled him to fulfill his dream of serving his community and country. No truer words were written than his own last thoughts: “I was a real good American and I loved my country”. He retired from the Old Town Police Department after a long, satisfying career. Sonny was predeceased by his parents, Donald W. Smart Sr., Eva and Chauncey Miller. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan Jipson Smart; and brother Sidney Smart. He is survived by his children and spouses, Daniel and Diane Smart of Milford, Donna (Smart) and John Lodge of Old Town, Kyle and Lori Smart of Old Town, Deedee (Smart) and Steven Garcia of Iowa, and Tony and Monica Smart of Germany. His much loved grandchildren include Julie and Zachary Smart, Betty Jo (Lodge) and husband Danny Sanborn, Jessica Lodge and companion Chad Lothian and Torey Lodge, Tabitha Smart and fianc?, Andrew Ketch and Jason Smart, Anthony, Jacob and Noah Garcia, and Justin Ward and Catherine Smart. He had a special place in his heart for his great-grandchildren, Thomas and Gracie Sanborn. Sonny is also survived by his sisters, Mayre and her husband Philip Veillieux of Old Town, Dorothy “Dottie” Ehman of Old Town and Harriet Cummings of Auburn. His surviving brother is Timmy Smart of Topsham. Surviving brothers and sisters-in-law are Betty Smart of Bradley, Brenda Smart of Old Town, John Ehman of Old Town. Many nieces and nephews will feel the void left by his passing. He will be sadly missed by a special cousin, Charles Dolan, life-long friend, Kenny Thibodeau and his bingo buddies from the Old Town Elks Club. Friends and family may call 7- 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19 at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Old Town United Methodist Church, Stillwater Avenue, with Pastor Ron Chaffee, officiating. Burial will follow at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately following the service, all are invited to the fellowship hall for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
