PENOBSCOT – Doris B. Wilkins, 96, of North Penobscot Road, and formerly a longtime resident of the Hicks Road, Augusta, died March 23, 2008, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. She was born Sept. 22, 1911, in Augusta, the daughter of Fred Groves and Lucy (Bubar) Groves. Doris attended Augusta schools and graduated from Augusta General Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She was employed for many years as a nursing supervisor at hospitals in Santa Clara, Calif., San Jose, Calif., and Santa Paula, Calif. Doris was a member of Women’s International Bowling Congress and Western View Golf Club. Her activities included crafts, bowling, golf, and her flower and vegetable gardens. Her husband, Edward A. Wilkins Sr. died March 30, 1989; and a son, Edward A. Wilkins Jr., in 1985. Surviving is a daughter, Barbara Parker of Penobscot; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews. Doris wished to express her gratitude to her friends and family for making her life enjoyable. Visiting hours are 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday. Bright colored clothing is preferred. Spring burial will be at Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta.
