SACO – Douglas Allen McAfee, 50, formerly of Connor Township, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at his residence. He was born April 28, 1956, in Caribou, the son of the late Robert Sr. and the late Lorayne Morin McAfee. He attended schools in Higganum, Conn. and was a graduate of Caribou High School, Class of 1974. Doug enlisted in the U.S. Navy, active duty from 1976-1979 and retired from the Active Naval Reserve after 20 years. His Navy career took him throughout the United States. He served on two ships, the USS Dixon AS-37 and the USS Ashtabula A051, docking in Guam, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Hawaii and San Diego. He received several certificates, citations and letters of appreciation while in the Navy. Doug graduated from Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1982, with a diploma in diesel hydraulics, receiving the “Friend of NMVTI” award for outstanding service and support. In 1985, he graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor’s degree in vocational education. Doug worked as an electrician for 18 years as a member of I.B.E.W. Local 567. He was very active in the local Elks Lodge of Saco and most recently frequented the Rochambeau Club in Biddeford, serving as bartender as well as volunteering over the years at many functions. Many will remember Doug for his loving and gentle way with children and animals. He will be sadly missed by Hannah, Noah and Grace, his favorite little cousins and Pumpkin, Max and Fritz. He was predeceased by one brother, Robert Jr. in May of 2006. He is survived by one brother, Ralph McAfee and his wife, Ellie, of Skowhegan; one sister, Marguerite “Peggy” McAfee of Connor Township; one niece, Lorayne McAfee Certo of Middletown, Conn.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. A celebration of Doug’s life will be announced at a later date.
