CHARLTON, Mass. – Edgar F. Barnes Jr., 63, of 132 Partridge Hill Road died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his home. Mr. Barnes was born July 14, 1941, in Worcester, the son of Edgar F. and Alice I. (Payant) Barnes Sr. and lived in Charlton most of his life and Merrill, Maine for 22 years. He owned and operated his own salvage business for many years. Mr. Barnes was a former Charlton selectman and was also on the Charlton Board of Health. He at one time operated the Charlton Landfill for many years and was instrumental in designing the salt shed for the town. While in Maine he obtained the snowplowing contract for his area. In high school he was versed in public speaking and still enjoyed visiting and talking with friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed playing poker. His wife, Ruth (Carrington) Barnes predeceased him in 1994; and his sister, Wendi Barnes in 1985. He is survived by one daughter, Tammy A. Barnes of Charlton; two sons, Wendell S. and Wayne M. Barnes, both of Charlton; three grandchildren, Steven Bouchard, Jacquelyn and Tyler Barnes, all of Charlton. There will be no calling hours. The funeral was held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004 in the Federated Church of Charlton. Burial will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the Merrill Cemetery, Merrill. The Robert J. Miller-Charlton Funeral Home, 175 Old Worcester Road, Charlton, has been entrusted to direct funeral arrangements.
