DREW PLANTATION – Evelyn Levina (Hewey) Briggs, 93, wife of the late Harry Briggs, died May 3, 2006, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. She was born March 1, 1913, in Reed Plantation, the daughter of Levina (Merrill) and Harley Hewey. A beloved mother and grandmother, she was a long time resident of Drew Plantation. Evelyn, better known as “Gram” to many, understood the importance of the simple things in life. She was extraordinarily capable and self-sufficient. She lived each day with gratitude and faith; truly an inspiration to family, friends and her community. She was a giver, not a taker. She owned and operated a general store in Wytopitlock for several years. She was a long-standing member of the Wytopitlock Baptist Church. Fishing in the brooks and streams of Drew and Wytopitlock was her favorite pastime. Words like molasses cookies, peanut butter pie, the “Bears Den,” French braids and baby quilts always brought Gram to mind, and all the grandchildren have these memories of her along with her kind heart. She is survived by a daughter, Christine and her husband, William Major, of Sun City, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Briggs of Palmyra; two sisters, Susan Pappas of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Charlene Ellis of Sebago Lake; a brother, Laurence Hewey of Shapleigh; seven grandchildren, Paula Irish and Tim Irish of Wytopitlock, Sandra Opperman of Phoenix, Ariz., Kathy Miller of Austin, Texas, Kaeley and Kevin Sproul of Winn, Kristen and Dale Penney of Pittsfield, Darren and Lisa Briggs of Palmyra; 17 great-grandchildren, Jamie Kendall, Ashlee Kendall, Dan, Tim, and Christopher Irish, Scott, Jeffrey, Danielle and Miranda Jensen, Richelle and Allyson Ayers, Cody and Cassidy Sproul, Seth and Dylan Penney, Tabyr and Kahlden Briggs; four great-grand-children; many nieces and nephews. She also leaves many special friends, including Jimmy and Donnie Potter of Drew and Bob and Lois Crawford of Lincoln. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara; a son, John; a grandson, Bill J. Major; and five brothers, Peleg, Dale, Elbridge, Llewellyn, and Oakley Hewey. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wytopitlock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steven Waite officiating. Interment will be in Drew Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Wytopitlock Baptist Church.
