EAST HADDAM, Conn. – Gwendolyn (Carter) Harvey, 89, wife of the late Beverley Hunter Harvey, died Dec. 3, 2005, at Masonic Health Care in Wallingford, Conn. She was born Dec. 3, 1916, at Etna, the daughter of John E. and Lena (Sylvester) Carter. After her marriage, Gwen lived for several years in Carmel, then she and her husband moved to East Haddam, Conn., in 1950. In 1951, she started her career with Southern New England Telephone Company in Moodus, Conn. as a telephone operator. She later transferred to the Manchester office and they moved to Manchester where she lived for over 50 years. During this time she transferred to the Meriden office where she was a supervisor of Dial Traffic Control. She retired from SNET in 1976. She was a member of SNET Telephone Pioneers. Following her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and had visited nearly all of the United States. They spent their winters in Florida where they made many new friends from the United States and Canada. During their travels they researched and contributed much information to the genealogy records of the Harvey and Carter families. Gwen was a knitter and crocheter par excellence and her family proudly wear the beautiful sweaters she made. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and greatly enjoyed luncheons and other activities with them. She is survived by three children, Janet Loucks and husband, Earl, of East Haddam, Conn., H. Stephen Harvey and wife, Patricia, of Evans, Ga. and Richard Harvey and wife, Elizabeth of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, J. Merrill Carter and wife, Joyce, of Scarborough and Paul S. Carter and wife, Elcena, of Kensington, Md. She was predeceased by a daughter, Elinor Jane Harvey; a sister, Elena “Dot” Bird; two brothers, Dudley E. Carter and Frank S. Carter. A memorial service is planned for June 2006 at Carmel.
