NEWPORT – Helen E. Mayhew, 97, died Aug. 20, 2004, at a Pittsfield hospital following a period of ill health. She was born in Winterport June 6, 1907, the daughter of Fred and Edith (Holmes) Woodman. She was educated in Winterport Schools and a graduate of Winterport High School. She married Cohen Mayhew June 5, 1926, and he predeceased her on Sept. 18, 1975. She and her husband were caretakers at an estate in New Jersey for 23 years. She retired to Newport and was a caregiver to two elderly ladies and to her older sister Lillie Brackett for several years. She attended the Peoples United Methodist Church in Newport for many years. Helen is survived by her daughter and husband, Ruth and John Murphy, of Stetson; four grandchildren, George Francis of Newport, Sharlene Hill and her husband, Sam, of Farmingdale, Lauren Meservie and her husband, Maurice of Gardiner, Darlene Chadbourne and her husband, Aaron of Palmyra; seven great-grandchildren, Laurie Foustoukos, Paula Thody, Sam Hill, Bryan Fanjoy, Amanda Fanjoy, Eliza Hill, Shane Hill, and one great-great- granddaughter, Patricia Thody; one brother, Clifford Woodman and his wife, Arlene, of Winterport; one sister, Myra Bowley of Winterport; and a sister-in-law Mrs. Freemont Woodman of Winterport, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside committal services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at the Ellingwoods Corner Cemetery in Winterport.
